From a US-UK supergroup, charted in the lower reaches of the Billboard Hot 100, just missed out on the UK Top 50.

Travelling Wilburys - End Of The Line?

A very easy one:

First self-penned solo number one UK single by a female artist.

A Handful of Songs, Written By Lionel Bart & Mike Pratt, sung by Tommy Steele.

Edit: or was it Little White Bull? I'm leaning more towards this as its definitely more unlikable than the former suggestion.

Little White Bull it is. My next clue was going to be that I mentioned it in the songs you never want to hear again thread.

I'm not sure if it's the song itself that's so horrible, or just Tommy Steele's delivery of it.

Anyway

This 1980 song was a first ever UK chart entry for its female solo artist.

It was written by another female artist, lead singer of a band, and included on an album by them in the same year.

The B side was a cover of a Joy Division song.

True enough, also those awful stage school brats singing along with him, it real nails down blackboard stuff.

Grace Jones did a Pretenders cover but I can't mind which Joy Division song was on the flip.

I think you got it.

Private Life was the single and Pretenders album track.

It took a while for the penny to drop, but today I learned that Mike Pratt, actor, is also Michael Pratt, songwriter.

Or in the meantime anyone can have a go - keeps up the momentum of the game.

Be nice if people post a clip of the song when it's been guessed.

(Apart from Little White Bull, of course)

OK here's one

It's one side of an album;

It's based on actual events;

it inspired a film of the same name.

No, a little earlier for the song, way earlier for the film, and both from the USA.

I know it fails after the further clues, but it could've been the awful "Christmas Wrapping" by Tony Robinson and the quiet angels. He co wrote it.

This song was performed at Live Aid in 1985.

The same title was used for a song and album by an American artist a couple of years later.

This involves a fairly loose definition of 'a couple of years', but possibly Human Touch as performed by Rick Springfield at Live Aid, then being the title track Bruce Springsteen's ninth studio album.
