Oh, it must be Zeal and Ardor then, but I don't know which song you're referring to, maybe Devil is Fine?

Bingo. Your turn.

Alright then, I think this one will be rather easy for you lot, but at least it's seasonal.

This Christmas carol was a hit in the UK charts in the 70s and it featured in an episode of a BBC sitcom in 1997.

Not quite, obviously fits the former criteria but not the latter, or at least it's not in the sitcom I'm thinking of.

Mind, Mike Oldfield did do another tune which was featured in the sitcom I'm referring to, though not a Christmas carol.

Maybe I should clarify, by 'hit' I mean it reached the top 20 of the UK charts.

Hmmmm a cartoon sitcom that was on the BBC...... A BBC sitcom then :D

* looks like Amazing Grace was on it at least 3 times, one being in Season 7, which aired in the States in 96 and in Blighty in 97.

** I fully accept I misread the q and freely admit it is a hymn, not a carol, so its "out" .

Maybe another clue is in order, this was the first of only two charting singles for a group whose career spans almost 50 years.

Correct! Features in I'm Alan Partridge when Alan plays it to his date Jill on the way to the owl sanctuary. Whenever I hear Gaudete now I can't help but think of that scene.

In an attempt at one you can get in two seconds;

The artists holds Deathlist's longest survivor record. But will he be telling his beloved, that he is indeed returning to his abode in our affections as DL pick next year.

I can confirm it took me 13 minutes and 58 seconds to see the post, and the remaining 2 seconds to ascertain the answer.

Hmm, the author or one of his works?

Could be anything from and including The Phantom Of The Opera if it's the latter?

Just the author’s style in general. The author in question is Raymond Chandler, off of detective fiction.

*Googles what that means* Nope, just a British rock band, though this single falls more into prog rock.

Ah, I'd thought Dire Straits Private Investigations.

Thinks again.

Shite, sorry, I’m having a morning of retardation (post-clattered thick head disorder). I forgot about the other Knopfler.

Correct.

1970's UK top 30 hit (very well known) , was recorded by the Artiste after hearing it on a Yankee advert, which was the first time it had been performed so to speak.

Are you saying it was recorded firstly for the advert, and then only maybe later for an album (like U2 and Apple)?

My immediate guess is "Anticipation" but that had been released prior to being a Heinz ketchup song.  I know it's wrong, but trying to wrack my brain what advert had a decent song lol.  It's the advert that is going to be obscure and is the red herring.
