About to start compiling responses so far; two days left for new entries.

As game host, is it fair for me to join, and in particular, would anyone object if I entered a "Wisdom of crowds" team (basically comprised of the mean team length of all publicly posted teams and all the most popular names from publicly posted teams so far with the most popular joker as joker)?  I'm quite fond of arbitrary team selections...

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for sorting your pics alphabetically by first name - it makes my life much easier when adding to the spreadsheet (I should have offered a bonus point for this at the start...)

Incidentally, I've decided against adding my own team.

How would people prefer that I score this as we go on? Would you rather:

A That I calculate survivor penalties at the start and reverse them as teams get hits, meaning that everyone starts with minus [many] and slowly move up to positives?

OR:

B That teams start from 0 and I only calculate survivor penalties at the end?

Whichever is the most work for you.

Actually A: I think. I personally don't play that many pools and would like regular updates on those I do to pacify my raging OCD.

I reckon A, so we might witness some games of catch-up from teams that get heavier penalties.

My list comes to 15.

Olivia de Havilland

Leah Bracknell (J)

Robert Mugabe

Bob Dole

Javier Perez de Cuellar

Bob Barker

Murray Walker

June Brown

Bob Hawke

Nobby Stiles

If this list goes close then there will be a great rejuvenation of the list for 2020 - a good few old favourite coffin-dodgers here.

30 participants in the race.  I expect it to be a close one, if only because with short teams from a small pool, a lot of teams are fairly similar.  Only time will tell, however.

Our scores so far, one week out of 52 into the year, assuming I've written my spreadsheet correctly:

John Key -7
YoungWillz -13
theoldlady -15
Phantom of the Midway -15
drol -15
Sean -16
alt obits guy -16
Bibliogryphon -16
The Cosgroves -16
Master Tech -16
BlackLivio -16
Zefph -17
Grim Up North -17
The Quim Reaper -17
Sir Creep -17
Banana -17
gcreptile -18
SuperSowder -18
nantonian2013 -19
Joey Russ -19
Squonk -19
Torva Messor -19
Dr_T -19
Book -20
En Passant -21
ebless -22
Great Uncle Bulgaria -22
msc -23
The Old Crem -23
Gooseberry Crumble -24

(EDIT: Totals tweaked after a formula error failed to penalise for Bookie's Favourite)

Please feel free to check your total.  Currently, with 0 deaths, you should get -1 for each name on your team (doubled to -2 for the joker), -1 again if you picked the "Bookie's favourite", Herman Wouk (doubled to -2 for Grim up North who was the only punter to pick Herman as his joker), and -2 for being more than 5 away from the correct number of deaths unless you are John Key and predicted just 5 deaths (John Key will likely stay in the lead until we have at least 6 deaths and quite possibly more).  Let me know if the maths doesn't add up.  And don't worry if your score is low now; the lowest scores also have the greatest growth potential.

Overall, the following picks featured on at least 20 teams out of the 30 teams:
Herman Wouk (27 teams)
Johnny Clegg (24 teams)

Bob Hawke (23 teams)

Kirk Douglas  (23 teams)
Leah Bracknell (21 teams)

Nobby Stiles (21 teams)

Bob Dole (20 teams)

Stirling Moss (20 teams)

The most popular jokers were Bob Hawke and Leah Bracknell (7 teams apiece)

The following were unique picks for the team they were chosen on:

EDIT: Alan Greenspan

Cleo Laine

Honor Blackman

Hosni Mubarak

Jimmy Carter

Valery Giscard d'Estaing

And the following two individuals featured on no teams, and may thus be dubbed our designated survivors:
Dick van Dyke

Larry King

(If either of them don't see the year out, I'm blaming all of you punters collectively for jinxing them ;-) )

And now we wait for the hits.

Could be wrong, but I believe Alan Greenspan is a unique pick for me? Can’t find him on another list...

He was on The Old Crem's list (the only punter to send his list by pm).  Apologies.

Drat, I added an x to his row by accident rather than Barbara Walters' row below.  Corrected.  Thank you for catching the mistake - I was a tad worried that such mistakes might happen during single data entry of 14 * 30 individual data points.

I'm sorry to say you missed the arbitrary starting pistol by two days, and I'm done with entering teams into this game's spreadsheet. Better luck in other guessing games.

Sorry I missed it, it looks like a cool idea.  Give me a shout out next year if you run it again.

Sure thing. Next year I think a longer entry period might be among the sensible rule changes that could be made.
