I suppose I'm probably the only person on this site that hadn't heard of him until his name went on the list. .

Standard US/UK thing though isn't it?

Somebody earlier was proposing that some American weather person was more famous than god.

The problem I have with any of this is that generally speaking everywhere else is aware that some local (local as in national) personality is just that, known in their country and possibly wider, depending on circumstance.

Americans (maybe not all, but certainly some), assume "the world" is just a sort of 51st somewhat out of touch state, that'll get updated eventually.

Shoot me yanks, come on, I deserve it.

For the record, and minus my rant, I had no idea who he was either.

No, I never heard of him outside this site.  I did put him in my DDP team once I understood his fame status.

I suppose an equivalent would be someone like Bob Holness or Richard Whiteley.

Cameo in one of my favourite X-Files eps as a Man in Black!

I've genuinely known who he was since 1996 thank to his cameo in the X-Files. We were huge fans of that show. He was also in Cheers and WWF but I saw those a bit later on.

Similar length of time knowing about Bob Barker thanks to his role in Happy Gilmore.

What a shame.  Of course it can't be a total shock given his dire disease, and it must have deteriorated very quickly for him.  Seems like he was a good man, and he lived the last 12-18 months with a grace, dignity, and, yes, wit that is to be admired.  May he rest in peace.

Whilst we import a lot of US Drama and comedy with game shows we tend to import the format

Match Game became Blankety Blank

Hollywood Squares became Celebrity Squares

We had our own version of Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right

Christ, Merry Christmas Yanks! Is that really what people need on Christmas Day 2020?

As opposed to the traditional Eastenders offering of rape, domestic abuse, suicide and Sonia Jackson?

While generously giving them a few of our s(h)itcoms in return. Most of which got no further than pilots or one series, but also:

Man About the House

Till Death Us Do Part

The Office

One Foot in the Grave (with Bill Cosby)

Steptoe and Son

Tragically, they gave Come Back Mrs Noah the thumbs down.

A few game shows have crossed over too - Weakest Link, Millionaire, The Chase

Wikipedia, as ever, is a valuable resource, listing British formats exported to the US, sitcoms, reality, game shows you name it! (I admit to having never heard of a few of these) and vice-versa.

The "they were gonna play them????" back-and-forth in those lists is stunning, but I doubt anything can top the fact that a proposed US adaptation of late-90s ITV brumcom The Grimleys was going to have Michael Cera in the lead role.

Dudley-com please! I confess to having no idea who Michael Cera is.

I wonder when Fox execs began to lose faith in it, having reduced the original order from 13 to 8 episodes.

He was in Arrested Development, a pretty big US sitcom a decade ago and Scott PIlgrim the comics film.

@Paul Bearer I'm guessing you have access to edit the front page Obits - Trebek was number 35 on the list not 25.

Cheers, GUN

Whilst we’re on the subject, there’s also a typo in the last sentence of Nobby’s obit.

Odds on the next Jeopardy host are available. Surely it's Jennings' to lose?

Surely Donald Trump must be under consideration, as he is now available.

Though if a contestant gave the right answer he would probably call it fake news and take the money himself

I root for Jennings personally. Would be a nice way to still have an air of familiarity in a way a host with no prior Jeopardy ties wouldn't.

Just now, The Unknown Man said:

He's being replaced by Ken Jennings as the new host of Jeopardy.

Technically Jennings will be the first of several interim hosts. The next permanent host still is not decided.

I doubt Pat Sajak will quit Wheel of Fortune to host Jeopardy.
