ABC Deadpool III

Recommended Posts

Better late than never.
I have for whatever reason agreed to the impossible task of taking over the ABC Deadpool from the masterful oversight by Wormfarmer.
So for one last moment let's give him a big

And since we are looking back to ABC Deadpool II, a huge congratulations to the champ, RadGuy.    Our scoring system will remain intact, word for word, so the 55-point standard set by RadGuy is your target.

So let's get this party started!

The rules:

Submit a list of 26 soon-to-croak people to me via PM.  The first name or last name of the first person must begin with an A.  Second person with a B.  You get the idea. This game doesn't require you to choose a joker.

Qualifying names will be those getting an obit by sources used by the Windy City Deadpool, also found on its own thread at this site.  That pool, in turn, uses the obit sources of the Derby Dead Pool, but adds The Independent; US sources New York Times, LA Times, CBS News, Fox News, TMZ, and MSN.  Also acceptable are CNN, and the Associated Press as legit obit sources.

Plus the following International news sources:

http://www.cbc.ca/
https://www.theaustralian.com.au/
http://www.heraldscotland.com/

https://www.univision.com/

There will be at least 250 names, probably approaching 300.  Please police your own obits and notify me by PM or a post on this thread.  As Wormfarmer stated, this applies particularly to European obit sources.

SCORING:

A hit using the first name (all letters except as below)  - 1 point

A hit using the last name (all letters except as below)  - 2 points

A hit with the first name . . .  (A, E, I, O, U, Y)  - 2 points

A hit with the last name . . . (A, E, I, O, U, Y)  - 3 points

A hit with the first OR last name . . .  (Q, X, Z)  -  4 points

A hit with an alliterative name scores the points for both first and last names as specified above

(so an alliterative at the A spot would be worth 5 points, the B spot would be worth 3 points, the Q spot would be worth 8 points)

BONUS POINTS:

Person was born in the year 1939 or later - 2 points

Solos = 3 points
Duos = 1 point

All Vowel Bonus - hit all five vowels (A, E, I, O, U) using LAST names = 5 points / hit any four vowels using last names + the letter Y = 4 points

Example: if someone gets a solo hit with Zadora Zephyr, who was born in 1940 (assuming 10+ entries), the score would be 8+2+3=13  (the best you could do with one hit).

Ties will be broken by the date the final score is reached.  That is, if three folks end up with 18 points, the person that got to 18 on the earliest date will be the winner.

My list was PM'd to Bibliogryphon, the first entry I got.  The competition will start 1 AUGUST 2019 (all lists must be PM'd by 11:59pm (GMT) July 31) and end 31 July, 2020.

If any names die before the contest begins, I will ask for a replacement at that letter.  Names at other letters may not be shuffled to accommodate the replacement.

NOTE: Feel free to include a sub for any letter you like, in case you think it's iffy your name may not make the starting gate.  Probably a good idea.
Example:  C - Carter, Jimmy (sub Carter, Rosalynn)

Enjoy!

As you can see I posted the names by the initial that mattered, as I found it far faster to glance and who had whom.  You may find it the opposite and I apologise in advance if that is so.  I figured this would help with scoring but that too may be backward thinking.  I guess we shall see once this thing gets going, which given the names should be less than a week (are you listening Randy Romero?).  Obviously if I have posted a name in error, please let me know.
I will try to update every couple of weeks, or as necessary if we have a particularly large amount of carnage or vice versa.  I hope to keep up but DO throw me a bone if you someone has slipped through the cracks.

Thanks for playing and best of luck to all!

I only know what has been quoted in the press, supposedly rodent poison.  I would be very upset if it happened to any of my pets

I do have 7-8 entries to date.

I guess I’m to scrutinise these?  Lol fox guarding the henhouse.

I mean — I’m the one who has brought you such luminaries as Gabrielle D’Allonches, Hassan Asif, Stoney Mountain Darrt and Renee Walinga!

I’ll get on it in 24 hours.  Not knowing half the UK celeb names will keep me intimate w Google a day or two.  I didn’t see much in the rules re: celeb status.... so unless a clear Fringe/Non Celeb, it’ll likely get a pass.

Just bumping this to the top.  I have the following NINE teams entered (though fair to say I haven't checked if suitably 'celeb' enough yet, working on that the next night or two; 98% likely fine):

Sir Creep

YoungWillz

Bibliogryphon

Great Uncle Bulgaria

RadGuy
Yvonne
YorkshireBanker
Philip

Etushispushingupdasies

If you think you sent a list (didn't someone post one on the thread?  It's gone! LOL) and don't see your name.....well guess what!  Try try again.
SirC

EDIT: OK I have gone over the names for all the teams listed above and have sent out PMs asking for clarification and/or a new name in a couple instances.  I EVEN POLICED MYSELF!!  Only two names have I given the absolute AXE to , and those are Destinee McEwen (off of MY team lol) and Paddy Bassett.  I let a couple others slide....I am old and weak and mentally frail.  OBVS.
So if you have a team entered and didn't hear from me you're all set.

So I will need a replacement for the letter "I" which frankly is one of the 2 or 3 hardest ones I think.

So a question- would xi xi qualify, since it's not her real name, just a pen name?

Yeah, I'm not sure about a few types of names and what counts where.  Like Prince Philip, or Little Richard for example.

It should be OK, just like Jose Jose is his stage name and many people used him as well last year. Xi Xi was on several lists last year as well.

Wait — Abdullah the Butcher isn’t his real name?!

Yeah I saw this as the biggest sticking point for this pool and said as much with my first PM to Bibliogryphon about running it.

1. For starters—if the name was allowed in previous years it’ll be allowed in perpetuity, as the precedent has been established.  (Also, if posted by DL the same applies.  This should answer Prince Philip or Little Richard).

2. Second, my personal belief is we really start getting into subjectivity I hope to avoid when using stage names, pen names, etc.

“But they ARE the popular names we associate with that person, SirC”.  I know.  As I said to Biblio should we accept (the late) Tiny Tim when that wasn’t his fekkin name?  Sadly I think ‘yes’, in general.

I really didn’t want to advance this straight into the field of subjectivity.  Am I not supposed to accept John Wayne (you clowns prolly say he’s ‘Marion Morrison’, reversing the whole question posed lmao)?

So — into the morass of subjectivity we shall go.

If you have a question PM me rather than pages of posts here.  You know me, going to be somewhat lenient (what’s the saying — don’t misconstrue my kindness as cowardice?  Or summat lol).  I truly have no personal reasons to keep any particular person out, so if I do - don’t get all huffy.  Just a gut feeling we are approaching the precipice of no return.  And keep in mind if I say no to you that’s no to everyone, so you’re not being picked on.  That said, as Sir Creep says when donning his DP Admin hat: “I wasn’t put on earth to make friends.”

2b (supplement).  As an axiom--and following rules #1 and #2 above--once the person’s stage name or pen name etc is accepted, their real name is OUT.  We will establish one name and one name only for each carbon-based earthbound entity.

3. Third....nicknames.  I’m going to lean on the side of keeping them OUT, and that is said knowing I have one on my team (see #1 above).

So the great trumpeter ‘Buddy’ Bolden is Charles Joseph Bolden, Buddy is a nickname I don’t care how popular it was.  But again, we shall be subjective and hope for the best.

I know this didn’t answer anything did it.  “There’s bloviating SirC as usual”.  It’s as much insight as I can give.  Just send questions to me.

SC

Lastly (4.) there is the 'fame' threshold.  As the great msc recently stated:
"There’s enough Kate Bowler (published academic, cancer) types in the world that you don’t need Kate Cancer Mum of the Mirror Sob Story."

I also shouldn't need to be sold on someone.  If I find a worthwhile Wiki link or article about the celeb and their profession or accomplishments, fine (with all caveats lol).  Not even a loosely crafted Wiki link will save the likes of Qin Hanzhang, who appears to me to be a nobody.  He's OUT in case that wasn't clear just now.   Telling me the person is an 'activist' when what they are fighting for is right-to-die legislation (or some other cause that suddenly became time of the essence) means they were very likely no one until they got sick.  No SHIT they are activists lol.  I would be too.  I haven't raised a penny for pancreatic C research, but if diagnosed and feeling all philanthropic and self-serving, I may start a charity AND fight for the Dr. Jack Kervorkian (another Detroiter :) ) legislation.  Doesn't transform me into a legit celeb.

I know how the game goes but finding people who will actually die and QO vs dire concern over alliteration may be your golden egg laid by the 'bird in the hand'.  Let Hilda Hansen be your touchstone to disappointment.
