The 5th Crowdsource Deathlist (2020 edition)

Recommended Posts

Self-inflicted bloodbath - Parsons ought to have been on the DL as a British A lister nonagenarian who'd just had a hemorrhage, and I'm not one of these "Miss Miss Miss" types who'd last 2 seconds on Just a Minute. Repetition? Ah never mind...

One of those cases where you’re glad the 25 DQ rule happened, he would’ve just missed out had that not been implemented. Obit up later today.

May I congratulate the participants of this pool on scoring 5 hits within the first 5 weeks of the year?

Since we're now at 6 hits before 6 weeks... I know 50 hits by 52 weeks would be a statistical impossibility, but without wishing to jinx the list, what are the chances of 10 hits by 10 weeks?

PARSON'S PLEASURE

4/50

nicholas-parsons.thumb.jpg.36bd2cda6cec1ff07517a64c1301b25c.jpg

28th January 2020

As the Minute Waltz ends, popular British TV/radio personality Nicholas Parsons has died aged 96 to give The Crowdsourced Deathlist another success. Parsons worked in Clydeside shipbuilding as an engineer during World War Two, before a stage comedy career beckoned. He presented the first episode of radio quiz show Just A Minute (in which people must speak for a minute on a random topic without repeating any words, hesitating, or deviation from the topic) in 1967, and was still the host for the last recorded series in 2019. His CV extended from pantomime to Doctor Who to TV gameshow Sale of the Century (aren’t these the same thing?). However, he was most lauded by his peers as a comedy straight man, starting out as the partner to the legendary Arthur Haynes, and diving into the 1980s alternate comedy scene, starring opposite Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson in Mr Jolly Lives Next Door. Parsons was also the jovial butt of many jokes on shows as diverse as Just a Minute, the TV version of Just a Minute, the documentary of Just a Minute, the stage show of Just a Minute, the board game of Just a Minute and The Roland Rat Show. He was still performing at the Edinburgh Fringe last year when he took ill, and recent press about how serious this had been was taken to heart by our voters, who gave him a spot on The Crowdsourced Deathlist. Just as well, as you can scarcely imagine a major Deathlist missing a British A lister like this. Though tbf, we would've missed him as well had the 25 carry over rule not existed...

(Had a bit of help on this one, been a bit busy as of late. Will try to get Arap Moi and Douglas obits ASAP)

Easier to help on the obit of someone you've been a huge fan of, as opposed to some one like Arap Moi.

"Uh, he dictated in Kenya for years and drol hated him..."

7 hits for this list vs 5 for the deathlist now. Don't know what the record hit total is for this list, but I imagine it will be broken this year.

THAT'S ARAP*

5/50

3rd February 2020

Daniel arap Moi has died at 95 to bring over some more success on the Crowdsource list. He was perhaps best known as the president of Vietnam, where while his role was honorary, he did expand the power of the presidency in that country, and for that everyone respec... Hold on a second. Am I mixing up my third world country world leaders? Jeez, there's so many of them. Anyways, he was a notorious president in Egypt who succeeded Anwar Sadat after he got assassinated, and... Ugh, why do I keep messing this up? Anyways, Arap Moi was the second president of Kenya, succeeding Jomo Kenyatta after his death. He was pretty popular at first, but slowly but surely he became a big dictator. After he defeated an attempted coup on him in 1982, he began to slowly make Kenya a one party state (though that eventually returned via outside forces in 1991). Eventually, the rest of the world viewed Kenya as an autocratic country. His re-elections in 1992 and 1997 was marred in political violence, and Moi himself was accused of multiple human rights abuses. Eventually, he could no longer run for president due to constitution changes, and he retired in 2002. Beginning in October of last year, he was hospitalized due to complications from pleural effusion. While the status seemed to continually switch back and forth, further health problems seemed to arise which lead to his death. He was really popular with forum, jumping all the way to the unlucky 13th spot in his debut appearance.

Still one up on your crowdsourced list (me 9/50) at this date Joey. I still think I can keep a lead through to the end of the year :old:

I consider this thread nothing more than a troll by Roey Juss to get you people to give him good names for DDP.  He just sits back, oh look 3 people chose X I better see what’s up with that person.
if I had that luxury I wouldn’t have missed on a couple people this year.  Just sayin.

You’ve all been had, great work Roey.

Dude, I didn’t even start the crowdsource list originally. And the dead pooling names who made the list were all mentioned on the forums a lot. They weren’t secrets at all.

Yeah, I started it as a way of getting good tips for the DDP, but people kept sending in Prince Philip and Olivia de Havilland rather than off the radar unique tips.:(

DEATHS OF GLORY

6/50

166893422.jpg.0.thumb.jpg.1b0e03dfdbef0d6e014cf2ea50575a22.jpg

One of the last surviving Golden Age of Hollywood actors and Deathlist legend Kirk Douglas has died at the ripe old age of 103 to provide the list with it's 6th success. Born as Issur Danielovitch, he changed his name to Kirk Douglas before joining the Navy in World War 2. After he got medically discharged in 1944, he began his acting career with a stage performance for Kiss and Tell, which allowed him to perform in other acting roles. Making his Hollywood debut in 1946's The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, he slowly began to become one of the leading men in Hollywood, starring besides leading actresses at the time such as Lauren Bacall and Doris Day. His legacy was further cemented with him starring in some of the most acclaimed films of all like Billy Wilder's Ace In The Hole, Walt Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, and Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory, the latter of which kickstarted Kubrick's career. Douglas's favorite film he performed in, however, was the Dalton Trumbo penned Lonely Are The Brave. In his personal life he was married to Anne Buydens for over 65 years and was the biggest couple to make it to their centenary while alive, and he also fathered Michael Douglas, a well respected actor in his own right. He suffered many near death experiences in his life, being nearly killed in a helicopter crash in 1991, and five years later suffering a near fatal stroke. However, fate would allow him to survive over 20 more years and become a legend to the deathlist community. He was making his second appearance at number one in what was his 5th appearance on the crowdsource list overall...

Javier Perez de Cuellar was a... um... uh... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...

(He did succeed a Nazi as UN secretary general and he did win a Nobel Peace Prize, so uh, not so dull after all? Anyways, forum popularity got him a much higher spot than last time, jumping to number 12...)

HOT ON HEELS OF DEATH

8/50

Document-Journal-Archive-Genesis-P-Orridge-Lia-Gangitano-THUMB-HEADER.thumb.jpg.d43c27d3d9236f417ee6e1b423780d9f.jpg

14th March 2020

Influential musician, performance artist, and occultist Genesis P-Orridge has gone cold after a long cancer battle to give the crowdsource list another success. Born Neil Andrew Megson, they eventually adopted the name Genesis P-Orridge as a nom-de-guerre. They first gained some attention when, alongside Cosey Fanni Tutti, he founded COUM Transmissions, which dealt with a lot of controversial topics at the time such as sex work, pornography, serial killers, and occultism. It was music, however, that their influence can be felt today. Founding the band Throbbing Gristle in 1975, they made music that was way ahead of their time, and indeed even today it can be hard to listen to. However, it set the groundwork for the industrial genre of music, where bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry would later gain success. They also fronted the group Psychic TV, another very experimental band that is hard to listen to and is ahead of it's time, albeit with it slightly easier to listen to than the preceding band. They were a very controversial and decisive person. For example, P-Orridge left the UK in 1992 after some sexual abuse allegations against them. Whether you like P-Orridge or not though, there's no denying he made an impact on society, for better or for worse. In the past few years, P-Orridge struggled with a battle with leukemia, and 2019 really saw a deterioration of his health. As such, they were a no brainer for the list, jumping all the way to 7th place in their debut year.
