Death By Numbers 2020

Recommended Posts

Alright, let's do another update, because sometimes, a whole day is worth an update on its own.

We've had Peter Alliss and Tabaré Vazquez today, picked by a few of you. There was also Valery Giscard D'estaing.

Plus, I have belatedly given points to The Mad Hatter, who had Jazz player Jimmy Heath - died in January with NYT obit. I only noticed that today, as I clean my lists.

Then there is Catherine Wines, a possible unique hit for DDT, but there has been no obit.

Chuck Yeager is a hit for me and at least one other player.

We are approaching the finish line!

This is the second to last update of the competition. Remember there are 7 more days in 2021 for late obits to appear. It doesn't happen often, but it means, that the next update will come in two weeks, and THEN we will declare a winner.

In this update we have the new hits: Chuck Yeager, Barbara Windsor, George Blake, a unique for Skinny Kiltrunner (still there?), oh, and of course, the popular pick Ged Stokes.

Cpt Chorizo's pick Bhanwarlal Meghwal is a non-obit, did I mention that before?

Anyway, I hope I've got them all, but will check once again for hidden hits before the end. If I miss anything, please tell me.

The standings:

Rank Team Score
1 Death Impends 1246
2 Joey Russ 1244
3 gcreptile 1165
4 msc 1151
5 Banana 1124

7 Clorox Bleachman 1036
8 JiroemonKimura 999

11 Deadsox 970
12 DevonDeathTrip 919
13 RadGuy 912
14 John Key 907
15 The Quim Reaper 894
16 The Unknown Man 881
17 Sean 870
17 Torva Messor 870
19 Skinny Kiltrunner 840
20 Etushispushingupdaisies 744
21 theoldlady 726
22 Toast 709
23 The Mad Hatter 687
24 The Old Crem 628
25 Sir Creep 594
26 Kenny 563
27 Grave Danger 528
28 Great Uncle Bulgaria 461
29 YoungWillz 448

31 Chilean Way 424
32 Gooseberry Crumble 354
33 ThePrematureBurial 313
34 Pedro67 275
35 Bibliogryphon 232

Can Joey get a differential hit? There are not that many, but there are about 3-4 that could push him over the top, mainly Sylvain Sylvain. But not Lee Noble, who would push Joey ahead of Death Impends, but I would leapfrog him, since Noble is my joker.

So Death Impends is leading, with Joey and me a hit away, but my hit would have to be Lee Noble.

Everybody else is at least two more hits away from the top.

Alright everyone,

time for the final update of the competition.

New hits: Pierre Cardin, and Ronnie Atkins MP.

Also, I think when Pedro picked "Sen. Mike Andrew" he was actually meaning "Sen. Mark Andrews", the US senator who got a NYT obit but not a QO for the DDP. So it's another hit for him.

Plus, Tom Belso received the very late year-end obit, and it's pretty significant in that Banana snatches a place on the podium away from me at the last second by a single point!

Still, in the end, the top remains unchanged and Death Impends wins the competition by a hair's breadth.

Congratulations Death Impends! Thanks everyone for playing!

Edit: Okay, the obligatory "how was the competition...."

Well, the beginning, as is usual, was a free for all, with several different people in the lead. Yet, Death Impends was already prominent from mid-February on. My luck of obits with Martino Sclavi and Rory Gilsenan soon ran out, and with the non-obit of Ed Genson I lost contact to the top while Death Impends kept scoring steadily - not always the super young people, but dead is dead. Though the one pick that stands apart is Ronald Shurer, a name I know she is particularly proud of picking, and who actually managed to open up the lead that lasted until the end of the year. But while the distance kept growing until mid-year, it then reversed back because of a couple of clever picks by Joey Russ who slowly crept up the scoreboard. It was his joker pick of Pat Smullen who turned it into a race - and those joker points had almost been crucial. Yoo Sang-Chul, Lee Noble and Tom Smith didn't score, Pat Smullen did.

Still, Death Impends ends the year with the most hits, and without the joker hit. So she rightly recaptured the trophy after having lead for about 8 months this year.

Below the very top we also see the strong podium finish by Banana, who fought RadGuy, Joey, msc and then finally me for that spot. I am expecting him to soon reach that point where the "research vault" is big enough to regularly win several deadpools a year. Winning the big pools, i.e. 20 picks or more, and especially Alt Obits and Death By Numbers, requires a lot of research, you need the 2-3 hits you carry over from people picked in the past. Banana might now be at the point where a win here and there is a good possibility. The nerve and talent is obviously there.

Joey might have just arrived at that point last year, winning Alt Obits and missing out here by measly two points. So congratulations on that progress! I expect more from now on ;).

As I said before, it is nice that the last round of my "deep research" names could eke out a last hurrah for me. Especially as it meant my fear that dropping Kieran O'Connor would cost me did not materialize. Commiserations to Joey, at least one of Cisovsky/Dr Reid should have gotten an obit, in my view, but as Reptile said you've got a bright deadpooling future ahead.

I would also like to congratulate @Death Impends on her 385,948th deadpool win

And also everyone, regardless of how shit they did, who doesn’t have a “research vault”.

Well done DI.

Happy to be near the top of the 4th quartile personally...
