Since the above roundup wasn’t updated despite me mentioning his QO 20 hours ago, a brief mention for Mike Tindall

It was noted by the Cmme, worry not.

After no deaths in the first seven months of the year for my main team, I’ve had three in August So far with Scowcroft, Hawerchuk and Banali.

After a terribly busy week, and a few days before a week-long holiday of mine, I could finally update again.

With Brett Hutchinson's/Sinclair's belated QO, April gets to 30 hits, i.e. one per day.

I might get another update on Monday in. But after that, things have to wait for about 8 days.

You're doing a grand job, keeping the technical side ticking over well.

So the Cmme are very slowly discussing the 2021 Derby Dead Pool as the covid/life/work balance has led to things being busy in August. When we have more time (hah), the plan is to look up the Qualifying Obits and see what can qualify under the ethos of the game, especially now that FFBI picks are barred. Yes, we'll even take some of Willz's ideas under consideration, old chap. :D

One thing I can announce as a sort of "this is what's been looked at" thing as it's been unanimously agreed.

Do you know what the biggest topic we get replies on is? It's not the theme team, or FFBI picks, or even "you missed my obscure pick"...

It's

"Why doesn't the Independent count as an obit anymore? Can you bring back the Independent as a QO? Please bring back the Independent! I scored, I scored, oh, you don't count the Independent anymore.... (the latter being quite pitiful as its usually someone hoping to get their one hit of the year)."

By an overwhelming majority, the replies I get for the DDP have concerned the axing of the Independent when it became a digital only news source. And so, with the general belief that the Cmme should be stewards for the gameplayers... we have decided to acquiesce to the mass appeal.

The Independent - independent(dot)co(dot)uk - will be an acceptable Derby Dead Pool qualifying source once more from 1/1/2021.

The rest of the news will follow when it's agreed, in September/October.

As you were...

I think it is fair.

I've noticed recently that all the main sources have coalesced into a homogenous group where the obits are all of the same folk. There's little to no diversity now - though The Times sometimes pops up with extremely niche folk. Indy sticks out a bit and let's face it they are all moving to online much more.

And the Grauniad, of course, which also has the reader-contributed Other Lives section which often features folk who are more interesting than the Z list "stars" and "legends" featured in the tabloids.

For the stats chasers among us, here's the Drop 40 record since 2004 (when there was enough teams for a Drop 40 to be relevant):

2005 -  (13/40)  Pope JP2, Mills, Heath, Best, Schmeling, Callaghan, Pryor, Eddie Albert, Doohan, Gretchen Franklin, Rehnquist, Wisenthal, Fahd)
2009  (12/40)- Swayze, Robson, Richard, Ted Kennedy, Allingham, Goody, Fawcett, Tony Hart, Patch, Malden, Atkins, Jackson
2012 (12/40)- Al-Megrahi, Gibb, Etta James, Patrick Moore, Geoffrey Hughes, Andy Williams, Niemeyer, Borgnine, Clive Dunn, Shamir, Sykes, Stynes
2016 (13/40) - Gabor, Crowe, Ali, Castro, Feek, Reagan, Granger, Angelil, Bhumibol, Marks, Ford, Aherne, Havelange
2017 - 15/40 - Forsyth, van der Westhuizen, Glen Campell, Downie, Christie, Sallis, Brady, Booth, Jerry Lewis, Snuka, King Michael, Skellern, Meads, MT Moore, Wetton
2018 - 14/40 - Bush Sr, McCain, Rev Graham, Stefansson, Cryne, Jowell, Elias, Lima, Miller, Nevin, Ricketts, Hawking, Stan Lee, Norden
2019 - 12/40 - Bracknell, Clive James, Mugabe, Ricksen, Doris Day, Harper, Blanco, McCririck, Vervoort, Conway, Clegg, Fairlie
2020 - currently 12/40 - Kirk Douglas, Terry Jones, Andretti, P-orridge, Doleman, Moss, Scruton, Gascoine, Oliva de H, V Lynn, Banali, Lewis)

Bold is the current record holder

4 months on, 4 names off the Drop 40, 4 months of the year left. And there does appear to be about half a dozen exceptionally ill/frail folk left at least...

I've cut out the frankly irrelevant years.

Why isn’t there a Team of the Month for July?  I’m desperate to know if I can milk that Tim Smith belter a bit longer

Two reasons

1. It needs to be calculated manually, by counting out the points per team, so is tedious and takes ages.

2. I forgot.

We try our best.

Updated in one sitting, am afraid it's no good news. But here's your least favourite DDP pick of the year...:D

Does this count as a QO for Richard K Guy? A quiz question to which he is the answer to that specifically mentions his year of death.
