Derby Dead Pool 2020

Out of  curiosity how many different names are entered by deadpoolers each year in total in the DDP and secondly how many of them are unique and is the proportion of uniques rising year on year ?

Thanks @msc

:o

Well the file on entrants I think must have every living candidate as it has over 13, 000 celebs on it, and this year we have 487 teams so can only have 9740 different celebs at most. (And obviously don't, just see the Drop 40...)

Ah ok, xls confuses me (I'm the words guy not the programmer) but it looks like 3396 different picks, of which 2322 are unique.

The third question is beyond my knowledge.

Yes 3396 is correct. Although it was actually about 8,000 unique spellings that had to be pared down to 3396 different picks. :D

That's certainly a lot more uniques than I was anticipating.

I just want to say the Bill Gates Sr obituary is the absolute funniest one of the year, imho.

Crossposting from the Fringes of Fame thread. Georges Gustave Hollande needs to be added to the List of the Missed.

Add Helen Reddy to List of the Missed. Looks like she was picked in 2015.

Considering her poor health was known I am shocked she is a miss.

Currently on 16th position, but gaps are small.

Here are my survivors:

Tom Smith (Joker) - If this man doesn't go down. I don't have any chance at all.
George Alagiah - Back on TV? F*ck.
Noel Conway - Slowly dying, maybe too slowly...
David Gulpilil - Why isn't this guy dead already?
Yoo Sang-Chul - Clearly has to go at some point, but maybe not this year.
Leon Spinks - I'd say it is very unlikely for him to survive this year. 90% chance that he dies before 2021.
Nobby Stiles - Haven't seen any news about him. Could go this year, could go later.
Alex Trebek - 50/50 chances.
Jean-Louis Trintignant - According to sources should be dead already. What is going on?
Bill Turnbull - Seems like not going this year...
Eddie Van Halen - Nobody really knows when... dead 06/10/2020

So... if I get Smith, Gulpilil, Spinks and maybe 1-2 extras from the list, do I have any chance to win? I doubt it... so better luck next year!

The death of Eddie van Halen puts me back on track... kind of...

Add another to List of the Missed. I played former governor Mike Foster of Louisiana on my Die You on the Bayou team a few years back.

I thought we had a Louisiana team which is why I didn’t enter one.  How the hell didn’t they have Foster?  Are they still around?

So, the complete changes to the 2021 DDP:

FFBI picks BANNED

As a result of the above, two other things aimed as the carrot part of this carrot and stick change.

UNIQUE PICKS to be worth FOUR POINTS in 2021.

Expanded Qualifying Obits (as far as is fair, but no NYT, Birmingham local mail, etc...)

BBC*:
bbc.co.uk/news (and all subsections, including the previously banned local news pages)
bbc.co.uk/sport
bbc.co.uk/newsbeat
And from the UK versions of the following:
telegraph.co.uk
thetimes.co.uk
ft.com
theguardian.com
dailymail.co.uk*
express.co.uk*
dailystar.co.uk
thesun.co.uk*
mirror.co.uk
morningstaronline.co.uk
inews.co.uk
heraldscotland.com
dailyrecord.co.uk
*includes their Scottish equivalents of the same newspaper

(As of 1/1/2018, the death announcements section of broadsheet websites, which members of the general public can pay for listings, are excluded)

…and from these news sites:

uk.reuters.com
news.sky.com/uk
skysports.com
itv.com/news* (this includes local news pages, and STV/UTV)
channel4.com/news
independent.co.uk
cityam.com
uk.news.yahoo.com (must be a UK link)
radiotimes.com
economist.com
The notice of death must be in written English. Video links are only accepted if the strapline mentions the celeb’s passing.

Qualifying obit sources will be monitored in use and can be eliminated in future years if they promote dross picks unexpectedly.

High scores on the teams pages was asked for. Don't hold your breath, we'll see if there's time in January.

No daily bonuses as it would bugger up the system.

No death announcements (Hatches, Matches, Dispatches) as they can be used to game the game, sorry Willz.

And now all the Cmme need to do to prepare for 2021 is to panic over where the circa £80 needed to keep the website running for another year is coming from! (The mystery of why TMIB went nuts becomes less and less of a mystery with each open door backstage...) Sorted! See what a bit of sharing your stresses publicly can fix!

Has there been any DDP pick so far not to have had a QO,  but featured on 'Last Word'?
