According to Sunday Times Peter - recall petition - Bone gave his local constituency a poor choice of either allowing his girlfriend onto the shortlist should the recall petition trigger a by-election OR he'd stand as an independent and drag away Tory votes. Strikes me as he may have over-estimated his personal power once stripped of a Tory rosette, but not helpful, either way.

That and Reform are hell bent on standing everywhere - Tories in tailspin, then.

May you live in interesting times, or summat

Shitstorm coming if they do reject the findings

This one is likely hopeless for the Tories, they lost it in 2017 (i.e., Corbyn led Labour took the seat when May was PM), Labour in very clear second with Brexit Party third last time. Just a guess, the recall petition will be a frenzy, there'll be a by-election which Labour will storm and the real interest will be whether Reform can overtake the Tories for second.

Even in a sea of genuinely thick MPs, he is one of the absolute thickest.

A vocally anti-abortion Christian who says that the Old Testament is his favourite book, but who is married to a man and is a corrupt shill for the gambling industry. A man of contradictions!

More significantly. maybe - the filmed sting from The Times suggests he isn't alone in being biddable for the right money, that's hardly news regarding politicians but - presumably - he could name names because he was clearly thinking to link up the fake lobbyists with more than himself.

The recall petition  against Peter Bone has been successful and there will be a by-election in Wellingborough.

If you slur your words when saying that "by-election" can sound like annihilation!

Majority 11,020 - 56% of the poll went to the Tories four years ago. Labour a mile ahead in second, everyone else more or less nowhere

So, another Tory loss to come soonish, then

Given all the ironic names among MPs leaving in disgrace, when I saw Skidmore was resigning I first thought he'd been involved in a public shitting incident.

It looks like this seat won't exist in the next general election, so it'll be a bit of a strange by-election. The area in the constituency at the moment will be split over 3 constituencies with perhaps the biggest share going to Bristol North-East, so I assume the winner will transition to that seat.

As for Andrew Rosindell, I used to live near Romford and wouldn't be surprised to see a defunct greyhound wearing a blue rosette get up there. One of the bigger shocks in 1997 was that Labour won there with a 16% swing. He really is a contemptible little oik though, so hopefully good riddance.

Peter Bone's girlfriend is the Tory candidate to replace him. There were a range of rumours about this. not least that Bone - who took the seat from a majority just under 700 to a 16,000 majority four years ago - threatened to stand as an independent if the Tories didn't select her. Either way, still a tough fight here, Labour clear second and Lib Dems on 7.9% last time out. So, add Reform UK contesting the seat for the first time and Lib Dem tactical voting against the Tories and this one could easily be lost.

Oh aye, and the distinctive looking Paul Maynard - currently pensions minister - is also in the kind of shit that prompts by-elections for misuse of taxpayer's money. Even one of his own workers is angling for him to have the whip removed. The man occupies a marginal seat, Conservative gain in 2010 for him and increasingly higher percentage of the vote each time out since that but still Labour within 10,000 votes of him, everyone else nowhere and Reform a shoo-in to stand if a by-election gets called, at this rate we may have a general election by defualt before Sunak gets the chance to call one. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/jan/06/pm-urged-to-suspend-whip-from-pensions-minister-accused-of-misusing-taxpayer-funds

I doubt there will be a by-election in his seat before the next GE: an investigation will take months, then assuming a penalty eligible for a recall petition is recommended and voted on, a likely appeal, recall petition duration and then by-election campaign period would altogether go beyond when the next election can be called by.

Scott Benton is drawing his process out long enough that were there a May election he'll get away with no by-election, although given he's had the whip removed and it's a marginal seat he's not going to be the MP after that election regardless.

Could be a fascinating by - election if only because the sear has the potential for hard left anti Israel type party to get a decent showing under certain circumstances.

I am not sure that the by-election will fall before the dissolution of parliament but the circumstances would be that there would be significant goodwill towards the Labour Party candidate. This has flipped between Labour and Liberal Democrats in the past but on paper should be a comfortable Labour defend

Sadly it probably will as if sounds like he only has a short while left and the election is widely expected to not be until November now.

Aye, dunno what it is about having had a sitting MP for decades who was a massively corpulent paedophile but the Lib Dems have struggled to compete too well there since the demise of Sir Cyril!
