Hares Death Pool 2020

I think the hint here is that all the established members went "I think I left the gas on at home, AFB can deal with it" tbh. ;)

I hadn't really intended to Grim. I am not sure that it would be right for a relative newbie on here (a mere 111 posts!) to be taking over a long-running pool like the Hares. Adding up the scores to ensure a pool is finished is one thing, but taking over the pool in its entirety would be a touch presumptuous for someone who is a late-comer to this deadpooling lark.

I think that the more established members on here should be given first dibs on running it, before I throw my hat into the ring. If no-one is interested in doing so, then I will give it a go rather than let it die. But  it probably needs to get going fairly soon.

As for your kind offer to update the scores - that's the easy bit! The only reason why I have been able to update things for the past few months is because of the huge amount of work that Deathray did last December to set up a master-list spreadsheet and an easy to use scoring system. Whatever the issues that the mods had with him, one cannot fault the effort he put into this pool every year. Its no wonder that he was prone to irrational outbursts with the stress of getting all the information together. A Christmas spent doing sifting through all the obscure and misspelled entries, and I too might end up sending PMs to all you c**ts out there, or posting pornographic GIFs of dwarves doing unmentionable things to donkeys! (or whatever it was that finally earned a ban).

112 now :-)

Yeah setting up 40 teams on a spreadsheet over Christmas sifting through obscure and misspelled entries just for other people's enjoyment - sounds like a complete nightmare - who the fuck would want to do that!

Before I'm banned again you have my blessing.

All Grims asking you do is collate the teams, literally a case of being a mailbox for entries up until the end of December and copying rules to new thread. Post teams in new thread, Grims offered to do the adding up scores by looks of it next year. Oh and thanks for keeping this alive.

We didn't use a spreadsheet most time I ran this that's by no means essential. That was a recent addition, a list of the picks in word with teams next to them suffices.

Oh and I've PMed you.

@An Fear Beag @Grim Up North

For whichever one of you wants to handle the regular scoring throughout next year I hope this is a reasonable solution. I'll take team entries and parse a master list, you score, remind me next December and I can do the same (Grim, you have my real email address which may be easier to get hold of me on than the Hare's burner so nab me when I enter a DDP team if I forget )

German Choirmaster Gotthilf Fischer is a welcome late hit for me here.

According to Google, "Gotthilf Fischer ist tot". I don't speak German but I am going to hazard a wild guess that it means "Gotthilf Fischer is toast"

So 345 valuable points for Book, who now moves up to 5th last with 604 points. Only 7 more hits needed in 2 weeks to catch the leader (or 6 with the Joker!)

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me......................... a hit for JiromeonKiruma in the form of Derek Aucoin and the lead at a very late stage in the game!!

The 360 points on offer gives JK a lead of 50 over Etush and a new record score for the competition.

Banana also had Aucoin and moves up to 2460 which is just 8 points short of a December 31st hit being enough to take the lead.

[Alex Trebek, Bob Gibson, Boris Klyuyev, Chitetsu Wantabe, Derek Aucoin, Frankie Benali, Genesis P-Orridge, Joseph Hanneschlager, Judy Dyble, Michael Gauthier, John Lewis, Lone Dybkjaer Steve Blackmore, Tabare Vasquez]

I'm sure you have all been on the edge of your seats for the past 13 days, wondering what happened with the exciting conclusion to the 2020 Hares Pool. Was there last drama? Did Grim rise from the ashes to snatch an improbable victory at the death?

We will come to all that in a bit. Before that, a little bit of house-keeping. Having sifted through all the obscure names in the master-list (Thanks Book and Predictor ), these are the last names that I can find that died in 2020.

16th October: Paul Rutter - Sir Creep

19th December: Shirley Abrahamson - Predictor

29th December: Pierre Cardin - Etib80

30th December: Ronald Atkins - Msc, Pedro

If you do come across any of your deceased picks that I have missed - tough luck, you had your chance. All scoring is now over, the tallymen are tallying, and the result will be here shortly.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that the winner of the Hares Pool 2020 is ...... JiromeonKimura :champagne::champagne::clap::clap:

A magnificent performance which highlights the importance of the late hit in this pool. 5 other players had more hits, but 9 of JKs hits came in the second half of the year, with the all important hits of Vasquez and Aucoin in December. That gave a new record of 3083 points, and the much sought-after Hares title.

WINNER

JiromeonKiruma (3083 points) 14 hits

[Alex Trebek, Bob Gibson, Boris Klyuyev, Chitetsu Wantabe, Derek Aucoin, Frankie Benali, Genesis P-Orridge, Joseph Hanneschlager, Judy Dyble, Michael Gauthier, John Lewis, Lone Dybkjaer Steve Blackmore, Tabare Vasquez]

RUNNER-UP

Etushispushingupdaisies (3033 points) 16 hits

[Alex Trebek, Armen D., Bob Gibson Cullan Brown, Daniel Arap Moi, Frankie Benali, Genesis P-Orridge, Jay Allen, John Andretti, Lee Kerslake Kirk Douglas, Pat Smullen, Roger Scruton, Tabare Vasquez, Terry Jones, Vasily Kulkov]

The unlucky runner up is Etushispushingupdaisies. Despite taking the lead late on (6th December) with a then record score, Etush just couldn't hold on and was caught with 5 days to go. 16 hits just didn't yield enough, with 7 of those coming by March 17th.

THIRD PLACE

Grim Up North (2888 points) 17 hits

[Alex Trebek, Chris Doleman, David Hagen, Dennis Goldberg, Frankie Benali, Genesis P-Orridge, Howard Finkel, John Andretti, Judy Dyble, Kirk Douglas, Lee Kerslake ,Liz Clarke-Saul, Nobby Stiles, Pat Smullen, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stirling Moss, Vera Lynn]

Filling the last of the podium spaces is long-time leader Grim Up North. Of small consolation is a new record of 17 hits. However the hits dried up after November 8th allowing others to catch up. The real deal-breaker however was that joker Tom Smith refused to go. Of the 17 hits, 13 would have given Grim the title had they been selected as the joker.

GOOD, BUT NOT QUITE THERE: the over 2020 points club

John Key (2621 points) 14 hits

[Alex Trebek, Bob Gibson, Chris Doleman, Frankie Benali, Ged Stokes,Genesis P-Orridge, Henry Gray, John Andretti, Kirk Douglas, Lee Kerslake, Qaboos of Oman, Roberta McCain, Ruth Bader Ginsburg , Sam Lloyd]

The Unknown Man (2550 points) 15 hits

[Alex Trebek, Chris Doleman, Daniel Arap Moi, Everton Weekes, Frankie Benali, Genesis P-Orridge, Javier Perez de Cuellar, John Andretti, Kirk Douglas, Lee Kerslake, Nobby Stiles, Olivia de Haviland, Sam Lloyd, Tabare Vasquez, Terry Jones]

THE "INVENTED THE GAME BUT IS STILL CRAP AT IT" AWARD (formerly held by the English football team)

Deathray 0 points

A fitting end to 7 years of hosting the pool, I'm sure you would all agree. Its what he would have wanted. Well, if you do insist on picking Keith Richards in a deathpool, what do you expect?

A few other mentions and awards:

CAPTAIN CHORIZO also beat the previous record of hits, and jointly hold the record of 17. Ultimately undone however by a combination of no joker hit, and not enough big scoring late hits.

AWARD FOR MOST POINTS PER HIT (MIN 5 HITS): NANTONIAN2013. 10 hits 2524 points - a remarkable 252.4 points per hit

THE "CAME TOO SOON" AWARD FOR FEWEST POINTS PER HIT: WHOAM. 8 hits, 5 of them in JAN/FEB. 813 points - 101.6 points per hit

Superb end of season review AFB (no risk of spelling mistakes if I abbreviate :D).

In 4 years of entering the Hares I have won once and now been third but I've never yet had my joker die. The joker for 2021 is Tom Smith again.

Congratulations Jiroeman - incredible score.
