Death Impends

Hartlepool Deadlypool 2020

It's gotten wild, wild, wild for the HPDP with the death of Frankie Banali, whose drumming career made him a natural fit for HPDP popularity. Ten teams in all went for him.

Toast 40 + 16 = 56.

drol 35 + 14 = 49.

Book, msc, Sean 30 + 12 = 42.

John Key, Prophet, Sir Creep 25 + 10 = 35.

Banana 20 + 8 = 28.

and The Unknown Man 25 for utilizing his first sub.

Given the popularity of the hit a new scoreboard is summoned. The top two remain intact but the chasing pack is shaken up:

Was looking at the drummers available late last year, had Banali and Kerslake for DDP - but opted only for Kerslake in the slimmed down line up for HPDP.

Ah, well...

The Hartlepool horserace continues as three teams gallop forth off the demise of Pat Smullen. 25 points for gcreptile and 20 each for Banana and Skinny Kiltrunner.

It befits Stanley Crouch's contrarian streak that he'd be a unique hit here. Clorox picked him, and so his total is jazzed up by 35 base points plus 14 more for uniqueness, for 49 total.

Unanimous verdict for Clorox Bleachman and Book to receive points off of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Only Clorox of the two appointed her to his main team so receives 25 base points and 10 unique bonus points for 35 in all, while Book receives 50 for courting a second sub hit.

And fear not, at least in the HPDP Clorox and Book cannot McConnell another pick into their teams before the year is up!

After weeks of quiet, the HPDP has been on fire in recent days. Or perhaps chilled, as a Blizzard (of Ozz) stormed through the scoreboard with the potentially crucial death of Uriah Heep/Ozzy Osbourne drummer Lee Kerslake. Nothing more exciting in the Hartlepool than three popular drummer hits, and Kerslake provides the third after Genesis P-Orridge and Frankie Banali.

Eight Kerslake beneficiaries:

35 + 14 = 49 for The Quim Reaper.

30 + 12 = 42 for maryportfuncity, msc, and the_engineer.

25 + 10 = 35 for Prophet.

And 25 sub points for drol, John Key, and Sir Creep.

And here arrives the next scoreboard, with maryport nudging narrowly into the lead, all the more impressively given how Tom Belso sits without QO on his team - the only current LotLer in the entire game. The next few months will determine if Belso is more Michel Delpech or Carrie Hamilton...

Aye, hangin' in there despite being down to nine players with Belso lacking a q/o (though Jim Russell went ages without one then got a mention in the BBC round up of dead motorsport figures for the year - Belso may yet deliver in that dept)

For the masses addicted to nowt other than watching this exciting competition my current survivors on whom maintaining my lead now rests are Gulpilil, centenarian former international cricketer Eileen Ash and James (dad of Charlotte) Church

Baseball player Bob Gibson went from throwing a no-hitter in 1971 to being a unique hit here for Prophet in 2020. A uniqueness that was perhaps aided by most players knowing baseball players aren't ideal here. Gibson's base 25 points is fouled by a bonus of minus 30, giving Prophet a net loss of 5 points.

Elsewhere, a recent duet of au revoirs on DeathByArsenic's French-heavy roster slipped by me. Hugo Drax portrayer Michael Lonsdale died September 21st, promptly followed by iconic chanteuse Juliette Greco two days later. The former gains him 35 points (25 base + 10 unique), the latter 28 (20 base + 8 unique).

Yep, yet another forum darling centenarian dies this year with Roberta McCain. markb4 picked the seemingly eternal political matriarch, receiving 25 base points plus 10 extra for uniqueness, getting him 35 in total.

The bedblocker collapse continues... Nobby Stiles's mission to seemingly outlast every other Boy of '66 has fallen short, and three teams score. 45 points for YoungWillz, 35 for Old Crem, and 25 for Great Uncle Bulgaria.

The next scoreboard emerges. DeathByArsenic enters the top 10 and a few others climb up the lower echelons of the scoreboard, but no change to the tantalizingly close summit.

Alex Trebek is a hit for many of us here.

HUGE hit comes our way with the death of the great Alex Trebek. No bonuses, Daily Double or otherwise. But either way, there's no Holzhauer/Jennings-styled romps in this game so the 17 correct buzzers-in carry a crucial change.

12 main hits.

Etushispushingupdaisies - 40.

John Key, msc - 35.

Book, RadGuy, Sean, The Unknown Man - 30.

Clorox Bleachman, markb4, Sir Creep, the_engineer - 25.

Prophet - 15. (additionally - I had failed to notice the base value of his Gibson hit was 30, not 25 - so he loses an extra point with these adjustments)

5 sub hits.

Second sub hit for Banana, gcreptile, theoldlady - 50.

First sub hit for Quim Reaper and YorkshireBanker - 25.

And it is that sub for YorkshireBanker that scoots him past maryport to reclaim the top. Book closes in the gap as well.

As stands, the top three are all able to win on another hit:

Yorkshire - sod else happening.

maryport - David Gulpilil or Nick Hitchon. Additionally, James Church's base points would initially take him past Yorkshire, but at a glance he likely would receive some sort of fringes penalty if he goes.

Book - Peter Tobin would receive a Crimes Against Humanity bonus if he dies - which would narrowly be enough.

The next HPDP thread is still a few weeks away from creation, but ahead of time I would like to propose a tiny adjustment to the bonuses.

Currently, the US president bonus applies to only incumbent or recent US presidents. For instance, when tallying the 2018 scores I did not give the bonus to George HW Bush as he had been out of office for nearly 26 years. And of course a living elephant in the room (or should that be donkey?). I am mulling expanding this bonus to apply to ANY US president, regardless of how long ago they served.

Thoughts? I do not desire to make vast adjustments to the HPDP bonuses, whether it be adding new ones or drastically rewriting the names it benefits. But this change would only affect a very small number of names.

Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaalery

He loves his Vaaaaaaaaaaaaaalery

Yep, another unique hit for DeathByArsenic with the discarding of Valery Giscard d'Estaing. That's his seventh unique hit now, and the fifth of them to be French. Could have been a killer combination had the ordering of the deaths been more in his favor, but instead Giscard d'Estaing was atop his list and so his base value sunk throughout the previous hits to 20, netting 8 extra for uniqueness for 28 points total.

EDIT: It has been revealed Giscard d'Estaing died of COVID-19. He is the second such fatality in this pool after William Frankland, and delivers an extra .19 points to DeathByArsenic.

Former Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez was a unique hit for The Unknown Man. 25 base points plus 10 for uniqueness boost him by 35.

Skinny kiltrunner stoked to ged another hit - Ged Stokes has died, and with that news 35 base points and 14 bonus points are delivered to Skinny, for 49 in all.

So three HPDPs in a row we have had a jackpot hit - ie a pick where their base value is high enough, and their bonuses accumulative enough, where that one hit nets 100+ points.

2018 saw Dead Cow secure a runaway win off the freak death of Vanessa Marquez - 225 points.

In 2019, LFN took an early lead off Carol Channing's death, whose uniqueness and resume led to 153 points, though he did not ultimately win.

And we've had that yet again, with the exact same bonuses as Channing's.

Yep, Barbara Windsor has died, and only Toast picked her. She had a long career in panto, and made 19 appearances on Celebrity Squares. All in all this means that the base 40 points have 96 extra bonus points attached, meaning the total haul is a hefty 136.

And so we have a huge game changer. Toast takes the lead off the jackpot hit with three weeks remaining. But it is not a done deal. Yorkshire can claw back the lead with any of his survivors (two of whom are centenarians), who all are worth at least 30 points. And for all we know, there could be another jackpot lurking in the shadows - after all, I didn't twig until tonight that Windsor alone could take Toast to the top.

Doing some double checking as we head into the final two weeks (and less than a week until HPDP 2021 entries open!). Have belatedly twigged Alex Trebek had in fact made three Hollywood Squares appearances. This provides boosts to a number of the chasing pack however this does not change the lead.

Here are the adjusted scores for those who had Trebek on their main team:

Etushispushingupdaisies - 64.

John Key, msc - 56.

Book, RadGuy, Sean, The Unknown Man - 48.

Clorox Bleachman, markb4, Sir Creep, the_engineer - 40.

Prophet - 24.
