Should it have it's own thread if it starts killing notables soon.

I think we'll cross that bridge when we get there

I still haven’t a clue what this thread is about.

It is the synergy of milking a vulgar metaphor for all it is worth combined with a timely prediction of how significant 2020 is likely to be!

Agreed that most will survive this outbreak, even if it goes global. But of the <5% (likely <1%) who die, most will be the elderly, or those with pre-existing health conditions. All of the deathlist fall into one of those categories, and wealth is hardly complete protection.

Remember when SARS was going to wipe us out?

This is basically SARS.

Actually I say that, but it is ACTUALLY basically SARS with a new name.

This is going to wipe out millions in the UK and USA.

Look on the bright side. You will probably get an upgrade to first class and lots of free champagne. People would die for that opportunity.

It really isn’t.

Already bored of the doom merchants and self appointed medical experts on Twitter telling us that this is going to kill millions worldwide.

Most people who have been infected have recovered or are making a recovery. Of the 5000 or so cases there has only been 106 deaths as of today. All the deaths thus far have been in China, primarily in the elderly and those who were already sick/weak. You can add in the contributing factor of poor healthcare in mainland China to that equation. Everyone contracting the virus and being diagnosed overseas is surviving.

Can't even be bothered editing, so here's my posts on the ebola outbreak from 2014, just change Ebola to coronavirus.

(Although I'd put a correction in here - since 2014, I found out the guy in 1999 in Germany didn't have ebola, it was another  hemorrhagic fever entirely. So European/US medicine remains undefeated against ebola cases which reach the West...)

Exact same thing counts.

Many rumours China is hiding the true death and infection figures

Peart + Kobe = Rickman + Bowie

Is this a fair fame equation?

Kobe = Bowie

Peart = Glenn Frey

Jones = Rickman

Parsons = Wogan.

I'd say that was a fair fame equation.

Huangshi former mayor Yang Xiaobo has died at 56, reportedly of coronavirus. You know it is serious when it begins to strike party officials...

EDIT: Media report it as pneumonia, but it is very suspect...

EDIT 2: Coronavirus confirmed.

I fear this will make the Spanish flu benign.

That's a bold statement. Spanish flu infected about 1/3 of the world's population, and killed something between 3 and 10% of those it infected.

If this coronavirus strain did the same, in spite of a century of advances in medicine, it would kill about 1 to 3% of the world's population... i.e. 75 to 225 million people.  To make such a toll "seem benign", it would have to kill over half a billion people.

Personally, I expect, if this goes global, that there may well be millions of deaths. I would not expect hundreds of millions, however.

Fair enough, but that's not really evidence for your prediction.

The Wuhan novel coronavirus seems much less deadly than the Spanish flu so far, and mainly the deaths have been among elderly people or those with pre-existing respiratory problems, whereas Spanish flu caused significant numbers of deaths among young adults who were apparently healthy previously.  I'm not saying it won't be bad, just not nearly as bad as Spanish flu was.
