The 2020 Deathlist Cup

Recommended Posts

And as the strains of the Minute Waltz fade away, I can begin sorting out the payroll for the grand opening of the Casino in a couple of months.

Yes we are offshore now, tables will be socially distanced in any event.

Enjoy the football/soccer/deathmatch guys and bon chance to An Fear Beag.

Thank you. I think the month proved both teams were close, but I had the benefit of the coronavirus lottery to just get over the line. Good match, best of luck in future competitions!

Thanks YoungWillz. My prediction of a bloodbath in the last round were woefully wide of the mark. The Reaper was far too busy with the Covid-cases to be bothered with the Frank Ifields of this world.

That looks to be him. Fortunately Jiroemon did provide a sub and as such Yoo Sang-Chul takes his place instead

Nick Cordero v Derek Draper in a Covid slugfest (I read the 28th April article about NC recovery and deleted him off the short list - I see that was a mistake)

Michael Cullen v David Gulpilil in a dying Antipodean match up

Lone Dybkjaer (my first sub) v George Hallett (at least msc picked GH too so not without hope)

Jim Jeffords v Willie K (everyone else has lost interest in Willie K so probably a mistake but Jim Jeffords retired for health reasons on 7th April so surely he can drag himself to the start of June before pegging it (he'll die tomorrow))

Karolyn Kirchgesler (talked about her remaining months not weeks on 21st April (she'll die tomorrow)) v Bernard Tapie (wasted pick)

Travis Perry (FFBI? - Organiser call and I'm fine with this, bad miss by me) v Ken Wilkinson (probably a wasted pick I just can't bring myself to drop him)

Ronald J Shurer v Peter Tobin (will good outlast bad?)

Killer Tim Brooks v Lee Teng-hui - well I want Killer to get a score draw here - see joker mismatch below.

Greg Zanis* v Killer Tim Brooks* - without a Greg Zanis offset in my team somehow he has to see June - a massive stretch goal.

Both: Michael Ziegler, Gary Burford

I think I'm 90:10 to lose just on missing out on Greg Zanis but the rest of Clorox team is better than mine too.

I picked Hallet for same reason I picked Prine last month - a dull defensive pick it turns out my opposition didn't actually have after all!

Cordero is suffering from septic shock now and Draper appears to be in an induced coma so either of them do a Hanbury-Tennison comeback from this it will be worthy of a standing ovation tbh.

Dybjkaer, Cullen, Gulpilil, Willie K, Wilkinson, Brooks are all likely to be dead by September, it's just a matter of the month!

Similar to why I picked Shurer; I think he's more of a summer death but didn't want to risk being defeated off a name I introduced to the deadpooling fold! (deadsox had done so years ago with Julia Perez...)

Not keeping a closer eye on Cordero/Draper will definitely bite me especially as I thought Cordero was over the worst of it. But so long as Travis Perry delivers I'm still in fighting contention.

Just out of curiosity, and anyone can answer, why is Travis Perry not FFBI?

He just seems to be an athletics coach at a college who is dying? What I'm after for future years is what is the thing that gets his toe over the eligibility threshold?

Not sure if this is what specifically persuaded Joey (though I did mention it to him), but Perry did win a state championship so on par with WT Johnston who was a valid Cup pick in 2019.

Jaci Hermstad becomes the first hit of the month, which was rather quick for an ALS hospice case. Nevertheless, Laura Barry 2.0 scores for two folk. One of them, Death Impends picked her predecessor in the DDP, which I wonder if that’s part of the reason she was picked? Questions to think about...

The other picker was An Fear Beag, shaping up to be this year’s rookie of the year as he faces the lone other rookie in the match still DeathByArsenic. That said, it’s a very long month ahead, and this thing ain’t over till it’s over...

  1. DeathByArsenic vs An Fear Bag 0 - 3

  2. JiroemonKimura vs Chorizo 0 - 0

  3. Clorox  vs Grim 0 - 0

  4. Death Impends vs msc 3 - 0

Is this Jaci Hermstad famous for anything other than her illness?

Yeah. She was a horseback rider before the ALS unfortunately struck her. Unfortunately most articles showed her as a dying women rather than her career in the sport, but these things happen sometimes...

A "horseback rider"?  What a quaint expression.   In what sport was she notable?

ETA:  Answer seems to be none.  She's just "an Iowa woman".

She had a horse, but seems to be only FFBI.  Lots of people ride horses.  Not many of them are famous.

An Iowa woman fights the aggressive ALS that claimed her twin sister

Jaci Hermstad, a young woman from Iowa, loves riding her sorrel gelding Bud and meeting new people. A country girl with the gift of gab and a degree in agricultural science, she landed her dream job of field marketing for a company selling livestock feed. Unfortunately, Jaci has a rare and dangerous form of ALS, caused by the same mutation that took her twin sister years ago.

IIRC she won a championship in something. Gonna be hard to find now but I did take her down for Cup last year

I’ve no idea whether Jaci Hermstad did anything of note before her diagnosis, but I would have thought that her campaigning  work to get a treatment licensed was enough to pass the fame test. They even named the drug after her!

It's none of my business, because I don't play in this pool.   But I thought that FFBI picks weren't allowed, and I am not convinced that anyone would ever have heard of this person but for her illness.  I am sure that she wasn't famous in the equestrian world, which seemed to be the assumption.

Just wondering why the pick was allowed.

Some of these cases are indeed borderline of being FFBI, which is inevitable given that cup hosts try to be as lenient as possible without accepting actual FFBI (and for the record, I have rejected names such as Taylor Swift’s mom, local firemen, and an obscure university professor who didn’t even get an acceptable cup obit anyways). Now I had thought there was evidence out there of a horseback career that allowed me to let her in. She didn’t have a big career in it, but I thought there was enough. Now, so far none of the folk on forum has even taken issue with this except for someone who doesn’t even have an interest in the cup. If there’s more cup folk who aren’t okay with the decision of letting her in then I may take some action, but as it stands she’s staying in the cup as a scoring hit, and my word is final. Okay?

No wonder the cup can be super stressful to host at times...
