Kobe Bryant

Recommended Posts

Yea, its gonna be between Peart and Bryant for biggest death of the year. I'd say Peart, but knowing how our society is with young athletes...

R.i.p

If on a personal level Peart is the bigger death, that’s fine, but objectively there’s no way that he tops Bryant (or Terry Jones for that matter) as the biggest death of the month.

The scenes from America are amazing. Thousands of people gathering to pay their respects , filling an entire stadium ! It does remind me of the way people responded to the deaths of Michael Jackson or Princess Diana, although I'm not saying his death is as significant as those of course. Maybe it's not quite as significant outside of the USA as those were .

I am sure that there are millions like me who have no interest or knowledge of US sports persons.

Smokey Robinson pays tribute to Bryant, posted as Smokey is looking pretty good for a music icon about to turn 80 imo.

By the same token I am sure there are millions of people with no interest or knowledge of tennis, but if Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal died in a plane crash next week it would still register as a significantly bigger impact death  to the public then Peart .

Yup. I'm a massive Rush fan but there's no way in hell Peart is a more significant death than Bryant objectively.....

Lol @Paul Bearer never having heard of him before today.

I hadn't.  So as far as I'm concerned,  he isn't a major death. I'd be curious to know how many people in the UK had heard of him.

Would "more chopper trouble" be a wildly inappropriate subheading for this thread?

Ok  I was thinking more in the way of "Slam Dunked?"

Anyone who'd ever watch Olympic basketball or NBA in the last 20 odd years...

From the UK and totally disinterested in Basketball but I'd heard of him in the same way I'd heard of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. RIP to all who died

I'll leave it to your excellent judgement and taste.  I understand the late Mr Bryant had previously experienced some difficulties relating to the use of his, er, chopper, hence my original choice.

Happy to leave it as is.

Classic VFR into IMC, Steve Hislop and Bertie Fisher both went the same way. When I was taking lessons my instructor said that kills more pilots than anything else and chopper pilots are more likley to push it than fixed wing as people think you can just stop and hover in cloud/fog, you cant do that even if you are flying on instruments. Not the first and sadly won't be the last.

Reaction to his death in the U.S. is absolutely hysterical.

Americans idolise sporting stars and actors like they’re demi gods.

Do you think they are having the same reaction about Louis Nirenberg?

Plus it's a shock dramatic death.  Always sexier than a slow decline.

Aye, but if, say David Beckham or someone like that had a Death by Helicopter we'd probably see a similar reaction in the UK. And I can imagine pretty much wall to wall coverage for days when Gazza's liver gives up.

I am not really supportive of starting threads for people who have just died. Yes it is worth noting but in an appropriate thread already. The threads should be there for those people we are watching.

If there is a convincing conspiracy theory around this then I withdraw my objection
