Gary's Gang.

Details of most of the band here referencing an article from March 1979: https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/70s/1979/CB-1979-05-05.pdf

Couple quite old for a pop band. Specifies Richmond Hills area of Queens.

Bill Catlano (28) (Is Catalano a misspell, or Catlano?)

Bob Froman (24) (Again is it Froman or Forman?)

Al Lauricella (19)

Rino Minetta (20)

Jay Leon (23)

Eric Matthew (25)

Doesn't specify Turnier's age but you seem to have that dob.

Happy to help!

Blimey, that was quick! I've managed to get a full DOB for Minetta. Added estimated birth years for the others. As for their names, I tried the variances on Google, nothing. Ancestry not churning up much else either. I'm going to keep the names that are most commonly used for now.

Might as well start the next part... ^_^

NB: According to this, the three producers – Bolden, Robinson and his then wife Savoie Robinson mixed the record in Paris, and an anonymous female vocalist added the lyrics. The three girls who appeared on Top of The Tops – Tricia Cheyenne, Denise Russelle and Florence Raynor were not "members" as such but were brought in to front live performances.

And 'front' they did, having just watched this!

A quick note of ongoing thanks for putting this together, I'm having a great time delving into a load of stuff that's either new to me or is a lovely rediscovery from my early teenage years with Classic Gold on the background radio as I fell asleep. Top Deathlisting.

Well, the Gibson Brothers surprisingly have me stumped. I can find names and Martinique back in the day was the French West Indies, but I'm blowed if I can find an interview with them or even a feature.

Steve Gibbons Band.

You probably already know, but this is Dave Carroll's page - seems to be now resident in Nelson, British Columbia: http://www.davecarroll.com/about.html

I can see Bob Wilson performing with Honeyboy Hickling right up to last year (there are vids on YouTube I haven't been able to bring myself to watch). Can't find anything on him - he was supposed to have come from a band called Tea and Symphony, but when I look them up they are a trio/quartet, with no mention of Bob. It's unsurprising - by the time Gibbons and Co were performing they were all well established musicians, so there's no interview outlining their origins and ages.

I've trawled through Locomotive and The Idle Race too - nada. Plenty on Jeff Lynne - I've even found when the music press were still calling him Jeffery[sic]!

Gibson Brothers – sadly overseas territory records are seldom available on sites like Ancestry so I couldn’t dig anything out from there on Alex. Patrick’s DOB wasn’t known until he died so might have to wait. Incredible they’ve continuously performed together since the start. I wonder if they will continue as a duo?

Steve Gibbons Band – yes I saw that. I can’t find anyone with the name of David (or Dave) Carroll living in BC whatsoever. Very strange! Unhelpful too that on the Gibbons official site his page says “born 19??”  Anyway, him, Wilson and all the rest of them seem to be alive and well! For all the claims on this forum in the past about how hard it is to name bands with all living members, another thing this project has done is disproved that. There are loads! Especially from the 70s despite the stereotypes of that decade ie Morrison, Hendrix, Joplin, Mama Cass etc.

Glitter Band.

Any of the entries for Tony Leonard give a clue, like maybe he was Tony Leonard Woolnough? I can find pictures and interviews a-plenty but seemed a quiet sort of chap and nothing coming up.

Goldie.

Bit more promising. Tom Knowles seems to have been kicked out of the band right after their TOTP performance - because they needed him to play on TV! Naughty. Can't find anything on him really.

Pete McDonald gives an interview here: https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Record-Mirror/70s/78/1978-06-03.pdf

Was briefly in the Spiders From Mars. The interview from June 1978 says McDonald "claims to be 27" which might indicate some doubt on the part of the interviewer, but if that is so, puts his dob c. 1950/51.

Cheers. I also see he's known for bottling somebody in a fight, and also performed at Live Aid!

Sadly can't find any bio deets for him.

Spot on. Anthony Leonard Woolnough is his name! Recent interview (it's in Icelandic) – he moved to Iceland. This forum indicates he is from Norfolk.

GRO: Anthony L Woolnough b. 1951 in Norfolk.

I'll add in c. 1950 for McDonald as the interview is from June! Thanks.

As an aside, I came across this site via the Popbitch weekly email. It's charting how music fades from memory (and, by extension, which newer music is known amongst the generations above).

Say when you were born, pick a decade and listen to 10 snippets of music, and click on how much you recognise the song from 4 options. You can take as many goes as you want and test yourself from the 60's to 2000's.

It's Billboard 100 stuff so US-centric, but plenty of fun and it's interesting to see just how much awful shit you know and recognise, whether you like it or not.

I resent them calling me a Boomer when I'm clearly a cynical and disaffected Gen X slacker. Meh.

I actually had trouble recognising some songs that I know very well indeed, but I suppose that's down to my laptop speakers.  They are usually tolerable for quick listens though.

Slightly disappointed that for some reason I don't know The Thompson Twins when I was clearly knocking it out on the karaoke only 10 days ago!

Yeah, there's some crap on there I'm clearly proud of never having heard.

A quick note of ongoing thanks for putting this together, I'm having a great time delving into a load of stuff that's either new to me or is a lovely rediscovery from my early teenage years with Classic Gold on the background radio as I fell asleep. Top Deathlisting.

If you look at the comments for the alternative version of the video posted at v=3KZSDLxUm3A (I'm trying not to embed another copy of the same video), a commentator says:

That lead vocal is my good friend American singer, Brenda Mitchell Stewart,  of GOOD STEWART PRODUCTIONS  & UNCLE BUTCHIES LIVE HOUSE.
Those ladies are not singing. They are lip-syncing Brenda's great vocal performances (all 4 songs) - STRUT, GETTING SERIOUS, DISCO DANCER & NIGHT PEOPLE THESE DAYS.
Now you know! PP

John Kitchener probably died of lung cancer in or around 1998. Here is the death notice of his wife from 2008: https://www.gazetteandherald.co.uk/news/3949449.jane-kitchener/

References his time in Country Fever and therefore by dint of this site, he was the same John Kitchener who was in Harley Quinne: http://www.peteroakman.com/history.html

Is Betty their mother? :P

Tbh, not completely useless information. David says on his own site that he was born in 1955 and "brought up in" East Yorkshire. Assuming David is his actual first name, there's only five people by that name born in 1955 in England and Wales. Locations are Chatham in Kent, Bromley in Kent, Southampton, Tavistock in Devon/Cornwall, and Sunderland, County D.

Problem is you do a search for the brother we need, John Crocker (I tried births from 1949 to 1959) and literally none of the above places reappeared! *grumbles* Family must've moved a lot!

Sometimes you just got to wait for the obit. :glare:

Improbably touted as British rivals to The Osmonds - last time I heard them was on Darryl Bullock's awesome Worlds Worst Records radio show. He has a habit of saying in his opening announcement; "do we have some crap lined up for you?"

You're sure they still breathe, right - because it's not like they've been a prominent or popular feature on 70s revival gigs or owt!
