It's always hilarious to find out what punk rockers do when they outgrow it.

Wikipedia was a great starting point for this lot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rezillos#:~:text=Mark Sinclair "Hi Fi" Harris, career as a research geologist.

Mark Sinclair "Hi-Fi" Harris - trained as an architect after leaving the band. According to the Register of Architects, Mark Sinclair Harris works for Donald Insall Associates: http://architects-register.org.uk/architect/051397K He has his own page here, complete with photo:

https://www.donaldinsallassociates.co.uk/people/mark-harris/ I can't definitively find a picture of "Hi-Fi" to confirm but it all seems to check out. DoB eluding me, however.

David "Dr D.K." Smythe - returned to his career as a research geologist. He is an emeritus professor at the University of Glasgow and a vocal opponent of fracking (yay!). I was a little concerned this was too straightforward but on his homepage: https://www.davidsmythe.org/ he has a link to personal info where he confirms he is often asked why he left The Rezillos! He also, helpfully, has a family history page, where he says he was born in 1947.

Simon Bloomfield (a.k.a. Simon Templar) - pursued a career in sociology. Not as much found looking him up, but on Google Images, I found these images very close together:

                                                                                  Simon Bloomfield on Discogs Image

Surely it isn't just me who sees the resemblance? Bizarrely, I've eventually located the photo on the right to a Twitter account set up last year, which has had absolutely no activity whatsoever. Further investigation reveals this video on YouTube of him performing alongside Swedish singer Thomaz in 2013 (this collaboration is mentioned on Wikipedia). Can't quite decide if the guy in the video could turn into the guy on Twitter in 6 years? That's about all I've been able to find on him thus far, but that was fun!

Yeah I agree, even somewhat embarrassing in certain instances but at least all these guys went on to have respectable careers! Better than a heroin overdose I suppose.

Harris – certainly wasn't born in Scotland as I've checked the records there. Nothing coming up on Ancestry or the GRO. Grrr researching these things would be 10x easier if the English/Welsh records had middle names like the Scottish ones!

Smythe – cheers, added!

Bloomfield – I see the resemblance. Likely our guy. I think I saw an interview with him somewhere so he hasn't fallen off the earth. Sadly can't seem to narrow down where he's from otherwise I'd be able to pinpoint him in the GRO.

I've seen The Rezillos in recent years opening for The Stranglers.

Renaissance.

Terry Sullivan's FB page: https://www.facebook.com/Terrencesullivanmusician/ Interesting he uses two Rs in the page but only one for his name!

Allegedly this I a link to his wife's page, but I can't access as not on FB: https://www.facebook.com/christine.sullivan.1466 and it may not exist.

Terry and Christine were married on 9 January 1971 according to a post on his FB - where I don't know and do I know her maiden name? Nup. But how many Terence Sullivans were married in the UK on that day?

Finally, Renaissance page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/RenaissanceTouring/

FreeBMD is your friend.  Only one Terence Sullivan marriage in the first quarter of 1971.

Cheers! Possible for someone to extrapolate that into a dob for Terry?

Sadly can't locate them in the Electoral Register (possible they're not on it).

Terence J Sullivan – there are none born between 1939 and 1951. Then, like buses, six come along at once (between 1952 and 1955). 4 from London, one from Cheltenham, one from Brighton.

Seems likely he is one of them. I'm looking at pictures. He does look to be between 22 and 26 years old at the time of their hit I would say? And it's believable that he's a bit younger than the rest of the band.

I've put it as "1950s – Living" for now.

He's definitely from London: https://web.archive.org/web/20060219131904/http://www.tsullivan.net/index.php?a=bio

Odd - most sources say he joined Dry Ice in 1965 which at best would make him 13 on the basis of birth records, ha! His own archived website is a bit more generous with the late sixties vibe though. Acht, we are near.

Ah. I will scrub "1950s" then.

Another problem with birth records is that they didn't historically always record middle initials such as "J".

Tony Rees and the Cottagers c. 1947 – Living
Discogs UK singer and bass guitarist with backing group composed of supporters of Fulham F.C., released to coincide with the club's appearance in the 1974–75 FA Cup Final
10/05/1975 Viva El Fulham #46
NB: Can't find too much on Rees. Here's a clip of him singing the record in a pub in 2009. A newspaper cutting from September 1967 here gives his age as 20.

I guess you can't speculate too much, but the article with the news clip refers to him as 'Tony Reese (aka Rees)'. As you're probably already aware, there is only one Tony Reese born in the UK according to FreeBMD and, helpfully, right in your timeframe:

A few more if you put Anthony Reese though, admittedly, but none in West London. His passing won't elude the club or the fan sites, though.

Hmm cheers, will keep in mind.

Do we have anything to tie him to Penzance, Cornwall though?

On a personal note, who the bloody hell calls their son "Tony"? Honestly. You're holding a newborn baby boy in your arms and say "Yeah he's a Tony". Conjures images of a middle aged bloke at the pub slugging on a pint and munching on a pack of McCoys.

Don't have anything tying him to anywhere in all honesty! Long way from Fulham, but if he moved when he was young? Just threw it out there as a possibility, thought it was interesting that only one matched the criteria and it fit for the dates too.

Maybe it's something to do with nominative determinism - are you really surprised to discover that someone called Tony Rees recorded a novelty record to celebrate Fulham's 1975 FA Cup Final?

I've reached 1960 in my chart music marathon (is it a marathon if you stop and start?). Anyway, since Ulitzer and co have put so much work into finding records, it feels a little pointless for me to continue Googling every act from now on. Here's what I found for the artists of all 1,064 songs from 1952-59. Not putting it in a spoiler because this thread already said fuck you to people trying to scroll.

Given the dearth of information, I'm assuming you've already come across this, but thought I'd post it anyway just in case: http://left-and-to-the-back.blogspot.com/2010/09/one-hit-wonders-13-rock-candy-remember.html

Although the article muses about the band being essentially made-up, comments underneath confirm they did exist, and had gone through previous iterations. Only one name is mentioned, although it does link up with your line-up - Bob Stuart. Annoyingly, there's a guy on there who says he was selling a press cutting about them on eBay but it's 4 years old and not visible anymore. A 2019 comment suggests Bob is a neighbour of the person, but their identity is unknown, so doesn't give an area!

Didn't actually see that page when I was searching!

Interesting.

There is a Martin O'Mahony born in Chelsea in 1957. Possibly him. Can't find any matching names for the others around that period though. Definitely need a press cutting of some kind to get a head start on this.

I find it pretty crazy that nothing is known of a band who had a top 40 single!

Okay, take 2.

It's Bob STURT, not Stuart as the Collins book says.

Here's a post by him on Facebook. In the comments section he mentions Rock Candy. He lives in Adelaide, Australia now. From County Durham / London. Looks like he's still in the music business and visits the UK regularly. No clues about his age etc. and still can't find him in the GRO.

Also, the only other member of Rock Candy that he's friends with is Chris Reeves who commented on that blog link you posted saying that he joined the band after the release of the single.

So more info but still nothing useful.

The Modern Lovers.

Ernie Brooks raised in New York and Connecticut. This article says he was in senior year at Harvard around 1971: https://ffanzeen.blogspot.com/2010/04/ernie-brooks-lover-looks-back-at-roots.html. Backed up by this article from WSJ from 2012 which indicates his age as then 62: https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304724404577297761990013888

So born 1949/1950.

Ok, so this is where I get called a stalker but let's just leave it at this being an object lesson of what can be found online with surprisingly little determination.

From his Facebook page, he's married to a woman called Jenny. On her page, there are photos with young kids and comments underneath thanking 'Grandad and Jenny'. Clicked this to another woman called Sturt. She married Robin Sturt in 2006 (10 years ago today! in 2016) and his 40th birthday was September 29th 2016. Easy enough...

(On Ancestry, it narrows this down to October 1976, which makes sense given he was born so close to the end of the month).

That gives me: STURT, Robert F m. SEARS, Christine P in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, Sept. 1972. Only two Robert Fs born remotely before that, 1938 is too early so I guess our guy is:

Not sure about the County Durham link, but that all seems to check out. Jenny is a second (younger) wife. One down?
