The Rimshots.

There's mention here that Tommy Keith was already dead by 2011. https://www.soul-source.co.uk/forums/topic/212155-the-delites-lover-alternative-acetate-take/

More information.

Transpires that he was born Norman Thomas Keith. http://doo-wop.blogg.org/the-delrays-aka-the-teen-kings-aka-the-delights-1-a116516736 and there are indications on the web that he was dead by 2003. This would tie in with this judgement when Keith's Estate was sued for copyright infringement: http://williampatry.blogspot.com/2006/03/times-under-17-usc-507-they-are.html

and Keith's son Nathaniel Thomas Keith was acting as administrator of the Estate, subsequently successful in entering the suit: https://casetext.com/case/roberts-v-keith-4?q=S.D.N.Y. Mar. 7, 2006 roberts&PHONE_NUMBER_GROUP=C&sort=relevance&p=1&type=case&tab=keyword&jxs

The original summons seems to have been served on Nathaniel as administrator at his home in Philadelphia in late 2004, however having read the judgements it doesn't appear that they actually refer to Norman Tommy Keith's date of death. Which is disappointing.

Anyway, he dead.

The Modern Lovers.

Ernie Brooks raised in New York and Connecticut. This article says he was in senior year at Harvard around 1971: https://ffanzeen.blogspot.com/2010/04/ernie-brooks-lover-looks-back-at-roots.html. Backed up by this article from WSJ from 2012 which indicates his age as then 62: https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702304724404577297761990013888

So born 1949/1950.

Thanks! Found him.

Ernest Brooks III b. 28 Sep 1949

Has been a resident of NYC, Astoria and Long Island. A quick Google reveals that the bass player has links to all those places. Discogs even has "Ernest Brooks III" listed under AKAs.

Added.

Ok, so this is where I get called a stalker but let's just leave it at this being an object lesson of what can be found online with surprisingly little determination.

From his Facebook page, he's married to a woman called Jenny. On her page, there are photos with young kids and comments underneath thanking 'Grandad and Jenny'. Clicked this to another woman called Sturt. She married Robin Sturt in 2006 (10 years ago today! in 2016) and his 40th birthday was September 29th 2016. Easy enough...

                                                                       image.png.7ae9380d46a02497a5fd2a76281c5762.png

(On Ancestry, it narrows this down to October 1976, which makes sense given he was born so close to the end of the month).

That gives me: STURT, Robert F m. SEARS, Christine P in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, Sept. 1972. Only two Robert Fs born remotely before that, 1938 is too early so I guess our guy is:

Not sure about the County Durham link, but that all seems to check out. Jenny is a second (younger) wife. One down?

Awesome, cheers. That's some level of digging. Added 1949. May reach out to him on FB for info on the other members when this website gets published.

45cat tends to confirm O'Mahony and Lovatt were members around that time (as they have writing and production credits on other releases). The spelling of their named tends to differ a lot though e.g. Lovett or Lovatt, O'Mohony or O'Mahony – not helpful! Nothing for Osborn sadly.

Just spent about an hour trying to get to the bottom of this to no avail.

I found him on a family tree on Ancestry. "Norman Thomas Keith" b. Philadelphia, d. Philadelphia. Not helpful!

Bizarrely cannot find either his birth or death info in the records. His parents were James L Keith 1923–2011 and Iola "Ola" Keith nee Lamal 1923–2015, so both outlived him.

His grandson is also called Nathaniel, he's a Philly rapper and is on Facebook. Mentions his grandfather Tommy in quite a few posts and even uploaded a pic of one of his platinum discs. He tends to suggest his father, Nathaniel has died. No other deets sadly.

Grrrr... infuriating!

Anyway, I've put Tommy Keith's dead as "before 2004" for now. Cheers YW!

Well I did some digging on the others but it's a bit more speculative and without any corroborating evidence it's pretty circumstantial but worth noting:

Using Bob Sturt - b. Sept. q. 1949 in Islington, London as a starting point:

Martin C. O'Mahony b. March q. 1951 in Shoreditch, London looks promising. If so, he's dead:

Martin Christopher O'MAHONY d. Islington, London - July 1990 (aged 39 - DOB. 15th February 1951)

Mike Lovatt - there's a Michael D. Lovatt b. Dec. q. 1946 in Islington, London which looks good for the year and area.

Michael D. Lovatt married twice:

(1) Patricia M. Moon - Dec. q. 1967 in Hastings, Sussex

(2) Amanda Stait - March q. 1993 in Hastings and Rother, East Sussex

Putting "Michael Lovatt Hastings" brought up this: http://www.checkcompany.co.uk/director/844577/MICHAEL-LOVATT which says he's a Coach Driver born in December 1946. The company he works for seems to be a property management company though, so not sure where the Coach Driver bit comes in. He was a director between 2002 and 2007 when he 'resigned', which in this case I assume means retired.

Butch Osborn is much more difficult. Google suggests Butch is an old term for 'Junior', so if a father and son have the same name, the son will be known as Butch to differentiate. So it's likely he has the same name as his father, but what name that is would be tricky to tie down quickly without any information to narrow it down.

Might be nothing to it, I've looked for Facebook profiles for Mike Lovatt without success, and without a picture of the band it's not much use anyway without a specific mention of the record. But as a work in progress it's a start. Bizarre just how forgotten they've been!

Looks like the management company is for the block of flats where he lives.  It just means that he and other flatowners own the freehold of the building, in which case they have to register a company to manage it.   The other people listed will be owners of the other flats.   We had this with a flat I once owned;   the freehold was offered for sale and we bought it between us so that we had control over the building.

Ah, interesting, thanks for that. So, not a company director after all. But still, if it's the right guy - he ended up in Hastings and was still there in 2007. After that, who knows?

Well, he was a company director.  He might have been the chairman, or the treasurer.

"Company director" simply means that someone is a director of a company.  It sounds important, like you're a tycoon :D, but it's often just a formality.

Let me re-phrase: 'so, he's probably not sunning himself on his private yacht harboured just off the coast of tropical island somewhere then'.

I think that's a myth.

You’re correct, it’s a rumour. I’ve edited the line.

Should know better than to copy directly from the Collins Complete UK Hit Singles book by now. It’s choke full of errors.

Indeed, so when you get to 90's charts be sure to treat Wonderwall the same way. Noel Gallagher, discussing his first wife, Meg, pointedly said "she thinks it's about her." Quite a few published sources claim it is.

Cheers.

I will be finished the 70s by the end of November.

The way things currently stand, I will not being doing 80s, 90s, 00s... for now.

I might wait at least a year before jumping into the 80s. No rush for it because few musicians from that decade are dead or dying at this point.

Also, doing 1952–1979 has been exhausting. Chews up so much of my time.

I think, of all the research exercises ever undertaken on these forums, this thread is by far the most monumental effort.

I've enjoyed reading all of it.  Much respect @Ulitzer95

Oh aye and...

Advance warning on this. When you get to T.Rex it'll be something of a nightmare because there are guest musicians and a changing line up throughout the career. Was just Googling to see if there's a one-stop shop page listing everything but can't find it. There's a list a few columns long for people appearing on the Dandy in the Underworld album which includes the final hits. It lists everyone but doesn't break it down track by track and the breakdown on the album credits - just looking at the inner sleeve on the vinyl - is a bit rudimentary. For example, the backing vocals of "Alialpha" on The Soul of My Suit (#42 and final hit in Bolan's lifetime) could be a cover for a few people.

That said, the Wiki page on T.Rex does list the main players in each line-up and the likes of Miller Anderson,  B.J. Cole and Herbie Flowers are all likely obitable on an average news day

NB: Garden was from Perth according to this. Annoyingly can't find him on Scotland's People (I've used both the spelling of Stewart and Stuart). Hugh Paul is dead according to that tweet – can't find anything else other than that mention. Assuming that Julie Baird was his wife, I tried to find him in the GRO with no luck. Cleveland Walker's son (also called Cleveland Walker) lives in Dundee and is on Facebook. Google reveals his father was active in a Barry White tribute band around 2007/2008. Not much trace of him since. Deceased? "Cleveland Walker" returns absolutely zilch on Scotland's People.

Ok, so here is a record that I think is Hugh Paul's death on Ancestry. His wife Julie's Twitter is based in Tyneside and this death is in Tyne and Wear. Puts his birth in 1955 and his death in 2013, a year before that tweet. I don't have access to Scotland's People so can't do any digging there, but copious stalking of Cleveland Jr.'s Facebook page threw up links which led to this page for Howard McLeod. From there, I found this page for Derek Henderson, which contains this photo from 2017:

Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling

Howard on the left, Cleveland second in (so still alive in 2017?), Derek and Owen Wisdom.

Can't add much else since they're Scottish-based. Strange that Cleveland is nowhere to be seen in any pictures on his son's or ex-wife's Facebook pages. He's originally from the Caribbean - wonder if he's gone back?
