Which they didn't.

Can't exactly say why, but I'm certain I detect a faint whiff of schadenfreude here.

No, it's a factual statement.

Updated. Thanks @Death Impends.

Quite upset about this. All seven of them were still alive 6 decades after the hits stopped and I thought maybe they'd all hit 80 before any dropped.

Tucker ofc rhythm guitar on Happy Together. A song which sold in the millions, has been covered umpteen times and will live on in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Mike Sammes 19 Feb 1928 – 19 May 2001 (73) Guardian obit
Mel Todd c. 1933 – deceased

Updated both these entries again. Had a fascinating conversation with Gay's daughter. Here's the new info she gave me:

1) Ross Gilmour is long dead.
2) Mel Todd is long dead.
3) Valerie Bain is still alive and living near Eastbourne! She must be in her late 80s/early 90s.

From reading Mike Sammes' autobiography, which is largely useless and barely mentions the other members:

1) Gay was married to British actor Peter Madden (wiki). Quite the age gap!
2) Valerie Bain is the same person as Valerie Taylor!
3) My lineups above are accurate for the charting hits.

I'm happy to leave this now. Wish I could locate Bain and get bio details for Todd and Gilmour but sadly the trail goes cold.

12/01/1961 Piltdown Rides Again #14 Based on Rossini's William Tell Overture
09/03/1961 Goodnight Mrs. Flintstone #18
NB: Brenmanen's name appears to have been bastardised, either intentionally or mistake. He is really California drummer Allen Reid Breneman, who appeared as a studio drummer on strings of hits during the 50s, 60s and 70s.

"Alan Brenmanen" changed from no info available to a full birth date.

This mentions that he was high school friends with producer Ed Cobb. Cobb was born in Little Rock, Arkansas but grew up in California. He was born in 1938, so presumably "Brenmanen" had to be born around then.

The name "Brenmanen" turns up zero results on Ancestry because it's not a name! Google suggested "Brenneman" and I hit that in. Up comes a studio drummer who appeared on everything during the the 50s–70s, including some Beach Boys records! This page suggests he was around 12 in 1954, as a "boy drummer". AllMusic and IMDb give him as an "Allen Reid Breneman". Ancestry agrees...

ALLEN REID BRENEMAN b. 11 Jul 1940 in California

Here he is:

sid_4501_1958_0026.jpeg.f8a17fbf835a4776c5d83810ee0e1000.jpeg

He has a Facebook profile and is alive!

Another blank filled in.

Dave Munden is on my #1 Hits DDP team; I'm only seeing this now while commencing research for the 2021 squad. Unfortunately, assuming that Barking and Dagenham Post won't cut it as a QO, it looks like he's my second List of the Lost-er of 2020, after Tony Baylis of the Wurzels. Gotta rack up some sex crime allegations if you want to make the national press as a Tremeloe.

Sad to see Dave has gone - unsung hero and cool guy. He drummed for them for 4/5ths of his longish life, and sang lead on many of their hits - including the first song I ever remember liking, aged 4 in 1969, still a fab piece of Beatles-influenced bubblegum-psych:

Naturally, it only reached #2.

Updated entry for the death of Frank White in late March, which I've only come across now.

Picked up by the local newspaper, annoyingly they don't give a date or an age!

A post on Facebook says he was born in Darnell in Sheffield. There was only one Francis White who was born in Sheffield in the 1930s–40s.

FRANCIS M WHITE, birth registered Jan–Mar 1944.

Must be him.

Maybe a little premature but thought I'd do a cut and paste job to create a chronological list of all the 50s, 60s and 70s hitmakers who left us this year seeing as that number now stands at 108 (with 9 of them being from COVID-19).

Maybe a little premature but thought I'd do a cut and paste job to create a chronological list of all the 50s, 60s and 70s hitmakers who left us this year seeing as that number now stands at 100 (with 8 of them being from COVID-19).

Here's an interesting one:

This Terry Porter who has just died claimed to play drums on The Lemon Pipers' Green Tambourine, a UK #7 hit. https://deadline.com/2020/12/terry-porter-dead-obituary-wga-agent-lemon-pipers-green-my-green-tambourine-1234653028/

A fill in drummer by all accounts and apparently almost everywhere credits the drummer Albaugh.

Might be a wee addition to their entry here for completeness.

Thanks YW.

Added it as a note:

The Lemon Pipers
Wiki American psychedelic rock band from Oxford, Ohio, Bill Bartlett was later a member of Ram Jam
Bill Albaugh 09 Jan 1946 – 20 Jan 1999 (53)
Bill Bartlett c. 1942 – Living

NB1: Wikipedia and other sources are full of nonsense about the birth details of some of these. There's a good article here from 2008, which talks with the band members and gives their ages. Bartlett is the only one I can't find on Ancestry.
NB2: According to his obituary, drummer turned talent agent Terry Porter (1947–2020) drummed on Green Tambourine as a stand-in.

British character actor Basil Moss died a couple of weeks ago according to his Wikipedia page.

"It is with enormous sadness it must be added that Basil died on 28th November 2020."

Can't find anything else, though I'm sat here on my second bottle of wine so that doesn't really mean anything. Anyone?

Edit: His local church announced his death on Facebook.

If the press notice, he should get a QO.

NB: Lineup was taken from this archived Geocities site.

Updated for the death of bassist Tony "Tex" Makins.

I found a few tweets which say "in tribute to Tex Makins" from 2017. Wiki gives his name as Anthony Paul Makins. Hit this into the death index and the name comes up for that year, and the full DOD was pulled from his family's tree on Ancestry.

Fame, Green and Thornton are definitely still with us. I think Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton, 90 next year, would be a decent DDP pick. He should obit.
