Dutch world cup goalkeeper Jan Jongbloed is 80 today. He was first capped in 1962, but had to wait until 1974 for his second, securing his place on the plane to Germany (OK, probably a coach). His final cap came in the 1978 World Cup Final, against Argentina; his style was 'unorthodox', but largely effective.

He was reportedly the last goalkeeper not to wear gloves in a world cup final (in 1974).

Coincidentally, as news  reaches us of David Prowse's death, its the birthday of someone else who had links to Star Wars; yes, US musician and producer Domenico Monardo, better known as Meco, who is 81 today. He had success back in 1977 with his disco arrangement of the Star Wars Main Title/Cantina  theme, which somehow reached Billboard's number one and was a top ten hit elsewhere.

Great video here...

It wasn't all Starr Wars though, oh no; treat your ears to almost 18 minutes of Disco Trumpet Goodness (OP) with his Wizard of Oz.

Just Googled ‘Mark Lawrenson Shit’ and, after several articles about him talking a load of shit, I found that someone called Robin Friday apparently kicked him in the face and curled one out into his bag later on. Nice chap.

Can you believe Billy Idol is 65 today, and I’d still bang the shit out of him.

Very nearly said exactly the same but for Lorraine Kelly, 61.

She’s only 11 years younger than my nan.

You should read up about Robin Friday.  He was a proper legend.

My excuse for my ignorance is that this is football, I am to football what Lineker is to clean pants.

Ah, but most people have never heard of Robin Friday.

https://www.the42.ie/robin-friday-paolo-hewitt-interview-5112875-Jun2020/

Quote

“He was the epitome of a ‘flawed genius,’ graced with incredible talent, but having a wild and unpredictable temperament that could see him kissing a policeman one match, pulling down an opponent’s shorts in a second, and being sent-off and taking a dump in the opposition’s bath in a third. Robin Friday was one of those characters that only crop up in football only once or twice in a lifetime. Anyone who saw him play for Hayes, Reading or Cardiff will tell you he was wild and unpredictable on and off the field, yet with a footballing talent that surpassed anything any of us had ever seen.”

That article actually leaves out the best bit of the quote:

"Well, you should come down here more often then.  I do that every week.
