Curly Howard died on this day 71 years ago, aged 48. Curly was born as Jerome Horwitz- his older brothers, including Samuel (Shemp) and Moses (Moe) called him "Babe", as he was the youngest in their family. They started calling him Curly (sometimes "Jerry") once Shemp married a woman also nicknamed "Babe". When he was 12 years old, he accidentally shot himself in the ankle while cleaning a rifle. This resulted in a permanent limp, which he covered in the Three Stooges films by walking in a silly manner. Curly's health began to decline in the 1940s, with his voice noticeably changing and taking more time to perform actions. He suffered a severe stroke in 1946, causing him to retire from acting- Shemp replaced him as the third Stooge. Curly suffered another stroke in 1948 that caused partial paralysis, leaving him wheelchair-bound. He was put into a nursing home in 1951, where he suffered a third stroke, dying nine months later.

Rutherford B. Hayes died on this day 130 years ago, aged 70. During the [American] Civil War, Hayes was the commanding officer of another future president- William McKinley. In 1864, Hayes was nominated to the US House of Representatives by Republicans in Ohio's 2nd district, and refused to resign from the army after he won. Hayes would be sworn into Congress in December of 1865, eight months after the war ended. Hayes would resign in 1867 to successfully run for governor of Ohio. Hayes initially retired from politics in 1873 to spend time with his wife and children, but returned in 1875 and would be re-elected as governor. Hayes was nominated for president in the 1876 election- and it was the closest ever, with Hayes losing the popular vote but winning the presidency against Samuel Tilden by one electoral vote (185-184). There were many claims of election fraud, leading to a crisis that caused the creation of the Electoral Commission, finding that Hayes won the 20 disputed electoral votes of four states (South Carolina, Oregon, Florida, and Louisiana). Hayes' presidency was known for marking the end of the Reconstruction era, and he had the first telephone installed in the White House (the phone number was "1"). Hayes also owned the first Siamese cats in the United States, sent by the American Consul in Bangkok- their names were Siam and Miss Pussy. Hayes refused to run for a second term, and during retirement, he became a supporter of educational institutes, advocated for better prison conditions, and expressed disdain at the wealth gap between the rich and the poor. Hayes was known for his long beard, but was clean-shaven in his youth:

Hiroo Onoda died on this day 9 years ago, aged 91. Onoda was a soldier in the Japanese Army during World War II who was stationed in the Philippines. In October 1945, Onoda and the three other soldiers remaining on Lubang Island found a pamphlet announcing Japan's surrender- they dismissed it as fake news, and continued holding out. One soldier surrendered to Filipino authorities in 1950, one was accidentally killed in 1953 by a search party looking for them (having likely shot first), and one was killed in 1972 in an altercation with police, after having burned rice collected by local farmers. Onoda would remain alone for another year and a half. In February 1974, an explorer named Norio Suzuki had come to the island after hearing that one of Onoda's fellow soldiers had been killed, which raised hope that Onoda may have still been alive (he was pronounced dead years before). After Suzuki found Onoda, the latter still refused to surrender, and stated that he was waiting from orders from his commanding officer. Said officer was tracked down (now a bookstore owner), and he flew to Lubang to order Onoda to surrender- the orders were given on March 9. Onoda was the second-to-last remaining Japanese WWII holdout (the final one was arrested in Indonesia in December of that year). Disliking the amount of attention he received, Onoda migrated to Brazil in 1975, becoming a cattle rancher, allowing the Brazilian Air Force to conduct training sessions on his land. In 1984, Onoda would return to Japan, creating an educational camp. Onoda would return to Lubang in 1996, having received a pardon for any actions against civilians by Ferdinand Marcos. Onoda died nearly 70 years after the war ended- and 40 years after his surrender. (Onoda in old age)

King Moshoeshoe II of Lesotho died on this day 27 years ago, aged 57. Moshoeshoe was the son of the paramount chief of Basutoland, Seeiso. His father died when he was two years old, and there was a regency period until 1960. In 1966, Basutoland gained independence from Great Britain, renaming itself to Lesotho and making Moshoeshoe its king. In 1970, his prime minister Leabua Jonathan stripped Moshoeshoe's powers in a "state of emergency" after his party lost the election, and the king went into exile in the Netherlands. Jonathan allowed Moshoeshoe to return a few months later and reassume his duties. Moshoeshoe was again stripped of his powers in a 1990 coup and exiled to the UK, and attempted to initiate new elections while exiled. This led to the new government, led by Justin Lekhanya, to depose him, and install his son Letsie III as king. In 1995, Moshoeshoe was again allowed to return, and succeeded his son as king. His second reign lasted only a year before he died in a car crash.

While attending a Tom Lehrer concert at the Hungry I nightclub, Montalban became offended by "The Vatican Rag", and the following conversation was had between the two: Montalban: "How dare you make fun of my religion! I love my religion! I will die for my religion!" Lehrer: "Hey, no problem, as long as you don't fight for your religion." In 1998, Montalban was made a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope John Paul II- the highest honor a non-ordained member can receive.

Schuyler Colfax died on this day 138 years ago, aged 61. (his first name is pronounced the same as "Skylar") Colfax was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1854 as a member of the newly-founded Republican party, running as a staunch abolitionist. In 1863, during the midst of the American Civil War, Colfax was elected as the Speaker of the House, a position he would hold for the remainder of his time in Congress. In 1868, Ulysses S. Grant won the Republican nomination for president, and Colfax- who was very popular within the party- was nominated to be his vice president. Colfax believed Grant would only serve one term, and as such did not seek renomination in 1872- Henry Wilson was nominated in his place. However, a scandal emerged in which Colfax was accused of insider trading with the Crédit Mobilier construction company (that was helping build the transcontinental railroad) in 1868. In January 1873, a motion to impeach Colfax was introduced, but failed due to voting on party lines, the fact that he had done it while as a congressman instead of VP, and that was not going to be in the vice presidential position much longer. Colfax spent the rest of his days as a lecturer, often talking about his experiences with Abraham Lincoln, improving his reputation. In 1885, Colfax walked a kilometer from one train station in Minnesota to a second one in -30 degree weather, and died of a heart attack at the station due to the combination of extreme cold and exhaustion.

Maurice Gibb died on this day 20 years ago, aged 53. During their childhoods (specifically 1955), Maurice and his brothers Barry and Robin formed the band The Rattlesnakes, which became the Bee Gees in 1958. While Barry was usually the lead singer, Maurice had some songs where he took that role- the most popular of which was 1970's "Lay It On Me". During the Bee Gees' temporary breakup, Maurice also released his own solo song, "Railroad". Maurice would stay with the group until his death- he died from cardiac arrest that was the result of a twisted intestine. His funeral was attended by Michael Jackson. Following Maurice's death, Barry and Robin retired the "Bee Gees" name, before returning its use in 2009.

Constantine I of Greece died on this day 100 years ago, aged 54. Constantine was the son of king George I, and was known for helping organize the first modern Olympics in 1896. In 1897, Constantine became the commander-in-chief of the Army of Thessaly during the Greco-Turkish War, and would again lead this army in the First Balkan War in 1912. Constantine became king after the assassination of his father in 1913, and soon had to decide whether to join World War I- his PM, Eleftherios Venizelos, wanted to fight for the Allies, while Constantine wanted to remain neutral (likely due to Kaiser Wilhelm being his brother-in-law). Venizelos soon formed a militia that declared war on the Central Powers, and led to a period known as the "National Schism". The Allies soon put pressure on Constantine to abdicate, and after Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown in 1917, none of their leaders supported Constantine. Threats from the Allies to bomb Athens caused him to flee to neutral Switzerland, with his son Alexander becoming king in his absence. Constantine would return to Greece as king in 1920 after Alexander's death from sepsis and Venizelos losing the election. The country was in the midst of another war with Turkey (at the time breaking away from the disintegrating Ottoman Empire), and attempted to siege Ankara- this failed, and after another military revolt, Constantine abdicated, with his son George II succeeding him. He would die of heart failure in Italy four months later. The newly-deceased Constantine II was his grandson (his father was King Paul, George II's successor).
