David Bowie died on this day 7 years ago, aged 69. Bowie needs no explanation, so here's some interesting things about him. - Bowie's son is Duncan Jones, best known for directing the 2016 film Warcraft (based on the Blizzard game). - Before being cast as Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth, other actors and singers were considered, including (DeathList alumnus) Simon MacCorkindale, Kevin Kline, Sting, Prince, and Michael Jackson. - Bowie occasionally voice acted, most notably in the 1999 game Omikron: The Nomad Soul (alongside his wife Iman) as the character Boz. He would also voice Lord Royal Highness in the SpongeBob episode "Atlantis SquarePantis"- a musical episode in which the celebrity guest singer doesn't sing. - Bowie composed music for the 1986 film adaptation of Raymond Briggs's When The Wind Blows. - Bowie enjoyed Nirvana's version of his song "The Man Who Sold The World", saying that it "would have been nice to work with [Kurt Cobain], but just talking with him would have been real cool." - Below is Bowie's final picture, taken two days (his final birthday) before his death from liver cancer: - "Lazarus" was the final song of his released during his lifetime, showcasing him on his deathbed before entering a wardrobe (symbolizing death).

Bob Saget died on this day a year ago, aged 65. Saget achieved fame by portraying Danny Tanner, one of the main characters (opposite John Stamos as Jesse Katsopolis) of Full House, from 1987 to 1995. Due to the show's popularity, Saget soon found himself as the inaugural host of America's Funniest Home Videos in 1989, remaining on the show until 1997. Saget would often be typecast as sitcom fathers, including Matt Stewart in Raising Dad (2001-2002) and more notably as the future Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014). Saget was also a comedian, and in 2005, wrote, directed, and provided the voice of Carl the penguin in Farce of the Penguins, a spoof of the documentary March of the Penguins. The film received negative reviews due to its juvenile humor- also due to copious amounts of footage of penguins fornicating. Among the last major things Saget did was perform as the Squiggly Monster in season four of the American version of The Masked Singer in 2020, being eliminated on the sixth episode of the show. Saget unexpectedly died in his sleep due to complications from a fall that led to bleeding in the brain. This image below features him with two other comedians in their 60s that died within three months after he did (Louie Anderson and Gilbert Gottfried).

Art Clokey died on this day 13 years ago, aged 88. Clokey began his career as an animator with 1953's Gumbasia, a stop-motion short film featuring blobs of clay moving to the background music. He would soon find work on The Howdy Doody Show, where he introduced the character of Gumby and his horse Pokey, getting their own show in 1957. The show lasted all the way to 1969, and has since seen a 1995 film (that was a massive box-office bomb), Eddie Murphy parodying the character on Saturday Night Live, and a slew of dog chew toys. Clokey was also known for creating the Christian children's series Davey and Goliath (possibly the most-well known in the genre until VeggieTales came along in 1993). The show was known to go into heavy topics- for example, death or racism. It should be noted that Davey's friend Nathaniel was an early example of an African-American friend of a White main character on television (first airing in 1961, in the midst of the civil rights movement).

Camille Yarbrough is 85. You might not recognize her name, but you'll probably recognize her most well-known song (specifically the opening lyrics): -

Emperor Hirohito died on this day 34 years ago, aged 87. Hirohito was the longest-reigning Japanese emperor, reigning for 62 years- December 1926 to January 1989. He was most notable for his role in World War II, and was forced to renounce his god complex that the Japanese believed following it. In the tail end of his rule, Japan was experiencing a massive economic boom. Hirohito was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 1987, and was in noticeably deteriorating health throughout 1988 (a mystery as to why he was not on DeathList 1989- though he could've been on the missing 1988 list for all I know). He died on the morning of January 7, 1989, and was (of course) the first Japanese emperor to have his death announced on television. (Akihito will likely be the first to be announced via internet) World War II veterans attempted to pressure world leaders from attending his funeral, but other veterans like George H. W. Bush did so regardless. Hirohito is often posthumously referred to as the "Showa Emperor".

Sidney Poitier died on this day a year ago, aged 94. Poitier's breakout role was as the character of Gregory in 1955's Blackboard Jungle. He would see his first Oscar nominations for The Defiant Ones in 1958, and was the first Black person nominated for Best Actor, and would win that award in 1964 for his role as Homer Smith in Lilies of the Field. He was also known for acting in A Raisin in the Sun, To Sir, With Love, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night, with the latter having him utter this famous line: Poitier would also have a directing career, often collaborating with Bill Cosby. The last film he made was the notorious Ghost Dad in 1990. Poitier debuted on the DeathList in 2019, and made three appearances. He died from a combination of heart failure, Alzheimer's disease, and prostate cancer.

Max Born died on this day 53 years ago, aged 87. Born was a German physicist who began to research special relativity shortly after Albert Einstein published his ideas. In 1925, he and Werner Heisenberg came up with the concept of matrix mechanics, further developing Neils Bohr's description of electrons jumping between energy levels around a nucleus. In 1926, Born devised the idea of probability amplitude to solve the Schrodinger equation; he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954 for this. Born, a Jew, had to flee Germany with his family in 1933, and settled in Cambridge in the UK, where he wrote several scientific books. He became a naturalized citizen on the eve of World War II, and would return to Germany in 1952. While in England, one of his daughters, Irene, married Brinley Newton-John, having a daughter in 1948- the late Olivia.

Mae Questel died on this day 25 years ago, aged 89. In 1931, Questel made her debut as the voice of Betty Boop, after getting the attention of Max Fleischer when she did an impression of Helen Kane. She would continue to provide the voice of the character throughout the '30s, and reprised her role in 1988, for a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Questel was also the voice of Olive Oyl in the Popeye cartoons beginning in 1933, and voiced her until 1962. In the 1950s, she was the voice of Little Audrey, and provided the voice of Winky Dink on the TV series Winky Dink and You- an early example of interactive TV. Questel would also seldomly star in live-action roles, and her final role is probably her most well-known in that medium: Aunt Bethany in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Qasem Soleimani died on this day 3 years ago, aged 62. Soleimani was an Iranian general who became the commander of Iran's Quds Force in 1997, and was known as a close friend of Ali Khamenei. As a general, he notably sent aid to the Assad regime in Syria during its ongoing civil war. Soleimani was killed by a drone strike, along with an Iraqi military commander. Immediately after the news broke out, US president Donald Trump tweeted this image of the American flag, all but confirming that he ordered his assassination. Soleimani's funeral was attended by at least one million people. At his burial on the 7th, a stampede occurred that killed 56 mourners. The following day, Iran launched a missile attack at an American airbase in Iraq. You may remember the World War III memes that sparked from this altercation, but ultimately nothing came of it.
