Johnny Cash died on this day 20 years ago, aged 71. - Cash's birth name was the initials "JR"- his parents couldn't compromise on naming him "John" or "Ray" (considering the order, it seems that John won). Because he was unable to use initials in the military, he legally changed his name to "John R. Cash". - During his service, Cash was reportedly the first American to receive the news of Joseph Stalin's death (given to him via Morse code, likely from a mole in Russia). - During his career's high point in the '60s, Cash was addicted to amphetamines- a short time in jail got him sober, but he was reusing them by 1977, and completely dependent on them by 1989. - Cash was 1/4th Cherokee, and as such was an activist for Native American rights. He would be made an honorary member of the Seneca Tribe in 1968. - Cash made a few TV appearances- most notably on four episodes of Sesame Street, and as a talking coyote in Homer's hallucination in a 1997 episode of The Simpsons: - Late in his career, Cash would be known to cover songs (primarily from rock and grunge bands)- most notably his swan song, his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt": - Cash would be diagnosed with multiple system atrophy in 1997, initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease, and given 18 months to live. The following year, he came down with a severe case of pneumonia, and in 2000 would make his debut on the DeathList. Cash ended up dying from complications of his diabetes about four months after his wife June's death; he would be the 13th death of the (then-record-breaking) 2003 list (the last of four within a week).

Jessica Tandy died on this day 29 years ago, aged 85. - Tandy's acting debut was on stage in 1927, and she would often star on West End- particularly in Shakespeare productions. During this time, she would often be in competition for roles against actresses such as Peggy Ashcroft and Celia Johnson. - Tandy would start acting in Hollywood movies in the 1940s- among the most notable included A Woman's Vengeance (1948) and Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. - She would also act on Broadway, winning three Tonys for A Streetcar Named Desire (in 1948), The Gin Game in 1977, and Foxfire in 1982. - Her film career would see a resurgence in the 1980s, when she starred in Cocoon (alongside her husband, Hume Cronyn) and Batteries Not Included. - Tandy was best known as the titular character in the 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy, which earned her an Oscar; at 80, she is the oldest actress to receive the Best Actress award. - Tandy would be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1990, dying after a four-year battle with the disease.

Cliff Robertson died on this day 12 years ago, aged 88. - One of Robertson's first acting roles was a title role- that being the main character of the 1953 sci-fi series Rod Brown of the Rocket Rangers. - In 1955, Robertson made his film debut in Picnic, and would star alongside Joan Crawford in his next film, Autumn Leaves. - Robertson starred as a young John F. Kennedy in the 1963 biopic PT 109- he was the real JFK's personal choice due to his youthful looks yet mature acting. - Robertson won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1969 for starring in the previous years' Charly. - During the '70s and '80s, Robertson would return to TV, most notably portraying Buzz Aldrin in the 1976 made-for-television movie Return to Earth and as William Martin in Washington: Behind Closed Doors. - Robertson's career would see a resurgence when he played Uncle Ben in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy- 2007's Spider-Man 3 was his final film role: - Outside of acting, Robertson was an avid aviation enthusiast, owning several planes and competing in hot-air balloon races. He would help organize airlifts into Nigeria during its 1969 civil war, and Ethiopia in 1978 to combat famine. - Speaking of his planes- Robertson was flying 7500 feet over New York City when 9/11 happened (about 6000 feet above the attacks), and was ordered to land immediately. - Robertson died the day after he turned 88.

William the Conqueror died on this day 936 years ago, aged 59. - William is also sometimes referred to as "William the Bastard" due to the fact that he was born out of wedlock- his mother Herleva was a mistress of his father Robert, who was the Duke of Normandy. Despite his illegitimate status, he managed to succeed his father as the duke thanks to the support of his great-uncle (who was an archbishop) and King Henry I of France (where he lived). - William was nearly ousted from his position when he was 18- continued attempts to do so were made until 1060. - William is best known for his invasion of England in 1066, as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry- this led to the end of the Anglo-Saxon kings, and began the Norman dynasty of England, which lasted until 1135. - Despite his takeover, William would usually stay in Normandy from 1072 onwards. He would still take residence in England for months on end, however. - In 1085, William ordered a census to be taken in order for him to properly tax landowners- this was compiled into the Domesday Book, which listed over 250,000 heads of households. - During the summer of 1087, William led an incursion into Mantes, but soon either got sick or was injured by falling from his horse and got an infection from his wounds. Immediately after his death, those who tended to him stole the clothes and jewels off of his body. During his interment, his bloated corpse did not fit into his sarcophagus, and his innards ruptured when his body was forced in (a similar thing occurred during the funeral of Henry VIII in 1547).

Faisal I of Iraq died on this day 90 years ago, aged 48. - The son of the Sharif of Mecca, Faisal would spend his early years in Constantinople. (Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey were all part of the Ottoman Empire at the time.) - In 1913, Faisal would be elected to the Ottoman parliament as a representative for the city of Jeddah. - In the midst of World War I, Faisal met TE Lawrence (of Arabia), requesting he rebel against the Ottoman government in return that he could guarantee the independence of an Arabian nation after the war. Faisal would agree to this, but he became disillusioned because he wanted his own empire, and disliked the borders of the Sykes-Picot Agreement. Regardless, he would siege Medina until the war's end in 1918. - Faisal would initially become the king of the short-lived kingdom of Greater Syria in 1920, but would be installed as the king by the British in Iraq- which was ceded to them after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. - Faisal would be a proponent of pan-Arabism during his reign, albeit he was quite nationalist (he equated being Iraqi with being Arab, and marginalized the Kurdish minority). - Faisal would also develop Iraq's economy by ordering the construction of roads, and had plans to build an oil pipeline from Mosul westwards to the Mediterranean sea. - Faisal died from a heart attack after a 12-year reign, and he would be succeeded as king by his son Ghazi.

(which was also Patrick Swayze's first movie). - Shadix would have his breakout role once he began to collaborate with Tim Burton- Otho, the interior designer who nearly causes the Maitlands to double-die in Beetlejuice: He was also the voice of the (literally, but not figuratively) two-faced mayor of Halloween Town in The Nightmare Before Christmas, who he would also voice in Disney's Kingdom Hearts video games: His last collaboration with Burton was in the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes, as an orangutan politician named Nado. - Shadix would also provide his voice to TV cartoons, often as background characters. His most notable voice acting roles (outside of the aforementioned Mayor of Halloween Town) included Brain in Teen Titans and Nimbar in (the ridiculously-titled Power Rangers ripoff) Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills. - Shadix's death was caused from a fall where he hit his head.
