Emperor Honorius died on this day 1600 years ago, aged 38. - Honorius was declared his father Theodosius I's successor in 386, and became emperor upon his father's death in 395 (then aged 10). He and his older brother Arcadius divided the Roman Empire amongst themselves- Honorius ruled the western part, while Arcadius ruled the east. - After an invasion from the Visigoths in 401, Honorius moved the capital from Mediolanum (Milan) to Ravenna, which would remain its capital until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476. - Another major Visigoth siege occurred during Honorius' reign in 410, where their king, Alaric, would ransack Rome. Many Romans saw this event as punishment for abandoning Roman polytheism in favor of Christianity, prompting Augustine of Hippo to write The City of God in response (published in 426, three years after Honorius died). - Honorius ended the practice of gladiatorial games in 404, likely due to the death of Saint Telemachus (a monk who tried to stop a gladiator fight and was promptly stoned to death by an angry audience). - After Honorius died without an heir, his advisor Castinus elevated a civil servant named Joannes to emperorhood.

King Duncan I of Scotland died on this day 983 years ago, aged 38. - Through his mother Bethoc, Duncan was the grandson of King Malcolm II, whom he succeeded as king upon his death in 1034. - Duncan's reign was largely uneventful, save for a military campaign he led into England in 1038 as revenge against Eadult (the Earl of Northumbria) attacking Cumberland. - Duncan was killed in battle after nearly 6 years on the throne, having led a punitive expedition against his cousin Macbeth, the Earl of Moray. Afterwards, Macbeth became king- and he would end up being killed by Duncan's son Malcolm III in 1057. - In Macbeth, William Shakespeare portrayed Duncan as elderly (when he was anything but) and a very righteous man- instead of being killed by Macbeth in battle, Shakespeare wrote Macbeth as killing him in his sleep after being convinced to do so by his power-hungry wife.

Tony Jay died on this day 17 years ago, aged 73. - Jay moved from the UK to South Africa when he was 33, and found acting roles on radio shows. He was known for adapting episodes of The Avengers (the spy show, not the Marvel characters) to radio from 1971 to 1972. - Jay would move back to England in 1973, and became a film actor. He would agree to playing Obi-Wan Kenobi during the production of the first Star Wars film- yet George Lucas chose Alec Guinness even after Jay agreed to the role. - In the 1990s, Jay became known as a voice actor, closely associated with Disney. He voiced the asylum runner in Beauty and the Beast, Shere Khan in TaleSpin and The Jungle Book 2, and most notably Judge Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame: - Jay was also known as the voice of Megabyte, one of the main villains in the early CGI TV series ReBoot, Lord Dregg in the original Ninja Turtles show, Spiderus in Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends, and child psychologist Dr. Lipschitz in Rugrats. - Jay died from surgery complications- a benign tumor was removed from his lungs, and he became very ill soon after the operation.

Henry Fonda died on this day 41 years ago, aged 77. - Fonda's acting career began on stage when he was 20- his mother was friends with Dorothy Brando- Marlon's mom. - Fonda would act on Broadway before his film debut in 1935, starring in an adaptation of a play he starred in, The Farmer Takes a Wife. He quickly became a leading actor, starring in films with celebrities such as Bette Davis and Gene Tierney within five years. - Fonda would win his first Oscar nomination for his role in 1940's The Grapes of Wrath, and received another nomination in 1957 for his production of 12 Angry Men. He would receive an honorary award in 1980, only to win Best Actor the following year for On Golden Pond, and was the oldest winner of that category (aged 76), until 2020 when Anthony Hopkins received one at the age of 83. - Fonda was nearly an EGOT, only failing to receive an Emmy- albeit he was nominated three times between 1973 and 1980. - Besides 12 Angry Men, Fonda was known for producing How the West Was Won and The Longest Day. - Fonda would star in several made-for-TV films, although appearances on shows were rare. One show he appeared on was the pilot episode of the American version of That Was The Week That Was in 1963 (the show is now largely lost media, save for a few archived episodes and the songs Tom Lehrer wrote for it). - Fonda married Frances Seymour in 1936- their two children, Jane and Peter, became very successful actors in their own right. - Fonda was too ill to attend the 1982 Oscars (for which he won the aforementioned Best Actor award), and so Jane accepted his award on his behalf. He would die less than five months later from a combination of heart disease and prostate cancer.

Phil Harris died on this day 28 years ago, aged 91. - Harris' real first name was "Wonga"- this unusual name is apparently derived from a Cherokee word meaning "fast messenger". - Harris would play drums for big bands in the 1920s, and formed his own by the end of the decade. - In 1933, Harris made a short film called So This Is Harris, which won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film. From there, Harris would begin to act in full-length movies, often starring with Jack Benny- whom he would also work for on his radio show as its musical director and bandleader, before joining the cast due to his comedic talent. - In 1950, Harris recorded the novelty song "The Thing", topping Billboard's "Best Sellers in Stores" (a predecessor to the Hot 100) for four weeks: - Harris is probably best known for his voice acting roles, particularly for Disney movies. He would voice Baloo in The Jungle Book, Thomas O'Malley in The Aristocats, and Little John in Robin Hood: (Disney would recycle the animation of the bears he voiced.) Harris would continue to voice Baloo up to 1989- for the TaleSpin TV show- though was soon replaced by Ed Gilbert during the show's production. - Harris' final film role was the voice of Patou the dog in Don Bluth's 1991 film Rock-a-Doodle.

Isaac Hayes died on this day 15 years ago, aged 65. - In the 1960s, Hayes was a songwriter who often collaborated with David Porter, often composing songs for the band Sam & Dave. - Hayes' breakout song was the theme song he composed for the 1971 film Shaft, which reached the no. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. It also earned Hayes an Oscar for Best Original Song. - In 1974, Hayes became a co-owner of the ABA basketball team the Memphis Tams, which he renamed to the Memphis Sounds. The team would be sold the following year and relocated to Baltimore. - Hayes would take a break from music to pursue an acting career, most notably appearing in movies such as Escape From New York and Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights. - Hayes' career made a comeback in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef on South Park. An extended version of the song "Chocolate Salty Balls" from the season 2 episode "Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls" topped the UK Singles Chart in early 1999: Hayes would voice the character up until the Season 9 episode "Die, Hippie, Die"... for reasons that will be explained below. - Hayes joined the Church of Scientology in 1993- they were lampooned in the 2005 South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet". In 2006, a statement was made in Hayes' name asking for him to be released from his contract with Comedy Central, citing the episode as the reason for his departure. Chef was subsequently killed off in a brutal fashion in the Season 10 premiere nine days later (where he would only speak using recycled dialogue, and the plot revolved around him being brainwashed by a club consisting of pedophiles): It would soon be revealed that Hayes had not written the statement himself, but rather his Scientologist entourage. This was due to the fact that Hayes had suffered a stroke in January of that year. Hayes died from a second stroke ten days before his 66th birthday, two and a half years after the first.
