Mel Blanc died on this day 34 years ago, aged 81. - Blanc got his start in radio in 1927, and was particularly known for roles on The Jack Benny Program. - In 1936, Blanc would join Leon Schlesinger Productions (soon to be folded into Warner Bros. Animation) as a voice actor, and would become the second voice of Porky Pig the following year. In the same short he debuted as Porky's voice, Daffy Duck also made his first appearance, and he would also be voiced by Blanc. Bugs Bunny made his debut in 1940, and Blanc would voice Bugs up to his cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in 1988. - Blanc was initially cast as Gideon the cat in Disney's Pinocchio, but the character would eventually be made mute. However, a hiccup Blanc provided would be used three times in the finished movie. - Blanc voiced Woody Woodpecker in his first three cartoons, and created his iconic laugh. - During World War II, Blanc would often lend his voice to wartime propaganda cartoons, which included the Private Snafu series produced by the US Army: - After the expiration of his contract with Warner Bros. Blanc would often voice characters in Hanna-Barbera cartoons- most notably Barney and Dino in The Flintstones, Secret Squirrel, and Mr. Spacely in The Jetsons; the latter would be his final voice acting role for 1990's Jetsons: The Movie. - Blanc was in a serious car crash in 1961 which left him comatose- his doctors slowly brought him out of it by addressing his characters while he was unconscious, and Blanc responded in-character in a weak voice. Daws Butler voiced Barney Rubble during Blanc's absence, and Warner Bros. wanted Stan Freberg to voice Bugs- Freberg declined out of respect for Blanc. - Blanc's last words were telling his son Noel that he loved him- in Yosemite Sam's voice. Emperor Anastasius I died on this day 1505 years ago, aged 88. - Anastasius had heterochromia; one of his eyes was blue, while the other was black. For this reason, he is often given the epithet "Dicorus" (two-pupiled). - After Emperor Zeno died in 491, the general populace of the Eastern Roman Empire wanted an emperor who was an Orthodox Christian. Zeno's widow Ariadne handpicked him as his successor, over her brother-in-law Longinus. Ariadne would marry Anastasius shortly after his accession. - Longinus would then begin a revolt against Anastasius, initiating the Isaurian War in 492. Anastasius would successfully put down the rebellion by 498, partly helped by Hun mercenaries. - Anastasius' reign was known for its lowering of taxes, a war against Persia from 502 to 505, and his personal deposition of the patriarch of Chalcedon in 512 due to his conflicting theological beliefs. - Anastasius died of extreme age (considering the life expectancy in 500 was about 35), and had no children to pass the crown to. Justin (I), the chief of his guards, would be elected the new Byzantine Emperor.

Ernest Borgnine died on this day 11 years ago, aged 95. - After graduating from high school in 1935, Borgnine joined the US Navy, and was honorably discharged in October of 1941. After Pearl Harbor, he reenlisted, and served until the end of World War II, where he would again receive an honorable discharge. - Having no idea what career to pursue after that, Borgnine's mother encouraged him to take up acting. His first role was in a 1947 production of State of the Union. - In 1951, Borgnine made the jump to TV, starring as a villain in the show Captain Video and His Video Rangers. A casting agent for Columbia Pictures saw him, and he soon made his film debut in The Whistle at Eaton Falls. In 1955, he would star in Marty, for which he would win an Oscar for Best Actor. - Borgnine would return to television, taking the title role of McHale's Navy in 1962. In the 1980s, he would also star in Airwolf opposite Jan-Michael Vincent. - To younger audiences, Borgnine is best known as the voice of Mermaid Man in SpongeBob. His sidekick Barnacle Boy was voiced by his McHale's Navy co-star Tim Conway: After his death, Nickelodeon reran every episode he guest starred in. - In 2009, Borgnine would be nominated for an Emmy for his role in the final episode of ER- aged 92 at the time, he is among the oldest people to receive an Emmy nomination. - Borgnine debuted on the DeathList in 2007, and made his second and final appearance in 2011.

Anna Wing died on this day 10 years ago, aged 98. - Wing got her start in acting in 1938, and appeared in many plays. She made her TV debut in the 1960s, having roles in shows such as Market in Honey Lane, Z-Cars, and (the mostly lost) Dixon of Dock Green. - She also made appearances in movies that included the 1973 version of A Doll's House and The 14; the latter of which she starred in with June Brown. - Wing was best known as Lou Beale in EastEnders. She played her from the first episode in 1985 until 1988, when her character would be killed off. - Among her last roles were appearances in 2004's The Calcium Kid, 2007's Son of Rambow, and a 2009 short film in which she portrayed an elderly Alzheimer's victim. - Wing debuted on the inaugural DeathList, but only made her second appearance in 2010. She appeared on every list after that until her death, and was the eighth hit of 2013.

King Edward VI died on this day 470 years ago, aged 15. - Edward was the first and only surviving son of Henry VIII, via his third wife Jane Seymour- his mom died from complications from his birth 12 days later. He immediately became heir apparent due to being male, superseding his older half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth; Mary was 21 years old and became his godmother. - Edward began his education when he was 6, learning foreign language, Bible studies, philosophy, and science. He developed a particular interest in cartography. - When Edward was 5, he was betrothed to his first cousin once removed Mary, Queen of Scots- she was just seven months old. This was done in an attempt to seek peace with Scotland to get them to unite with England, but when the Scottish regency renewed their alliance with the French, Henry VIII ordered an invasion- this lasted into Edward's reign, and is known as the "Rough Wooing". - Edward became king at the age of 9, which initiated a regency period led by his uncle Thomas Seymour, and then by John Dudley (the Duke of Northumberland). - In 1550, Edward would again be betrothed in marriage, this time to Elisabeth, the daughter of king Henry II of France. When Pope Julius III found out about this, he threatened to excommunicate both of them (this could've gone forward despite the threat, considering the Church of England had been established). - In January of 1553, Edward contracted tuberculosis- his doctors believed he had a tumor in his lung. He died after six months with the illness, and it is believed that he had suffered from measles and smallpox the year before, weakening his natural immunity. - In his will, Edward named his first cousin once removed Jane Grey as his successor- Jane was proclaimed queen four days after Edward's death, but was deposed after a nine-day reign once the Privy Council declared Edward's sister Mary as queen instead. Whether Jane counts as an English monarch remains disputed to this day.

Walter Gropius died on this day 54 years ago, aged 86. - Gropius' great-uncle Martin was also a notable architect, who designed the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin. - Gropius would be employed by architect Peter Behrens in 1908, but left to form his own business in 1910. Most notably during this time, Gropius and his associate Adolf Meyer would design the façade of the Fagus Factory. - Around the start of his career, Gropius would have an affair with the wife of composer Gustav Mahler, Alma. Gustav died in 1911, and the two would marry in 1915. But he was drafted into World War I, and would receive two Iron Crosses for his service. As he was not home for a long period of time, Alma would begin an affair with author Franz Werfel, and after his return from the war, they would divorce. (Alma married Franz in 1929, and Gropius was the only one of her husbands to outlive her.) - In 1919, Gropius was appointed as the headmaster of the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts, which under his administration became known as the Bauhaus. The artistic movement that Gropius spearheaded was known for its minimalism and abstract expression: - Gropius fled Germany in 1934, and settled in the US in 1937. He lived in Massachusetts, and designed his own home:
