Prince (Ƭ̵̬̊) died on this day 7 years ago, aged 57. - Prince was his real name- his fellow musician father, John Nelson, named him after his stage name, "Prince Rogers". - Prince wrote his first song when he was 7 years old. It was called "Funk Machine". - Prince was skilled at basketball. His high school coach called him an "excellent ball handler". - Prince has a shade of purple named after him, named after his "Love Symbol #2". This is what the particular shade looks like: - Michael Jackson's "Bad" was originally going to feature Prince- the latter turned down the offer due to the opening line "your butt is mine". - Prince was nominated for ten Razzie awards between 1985 and 2000, winning three: Worst Actor and Director for Under the Cherry Moon, and Worst Original Song for "Love or Money" from the film. - Prince appeared on TV twice: a Muppets Tonight episode in 1997, and a 2014 episode of New Girl (which was the lead-out program following Super Bowl XLVIII). - Prince died from a fentanyl overdose. He was cremated and his ashes were placed in a 3D-printed urn shaped like his mansion. - Prince sang "1999" 17 years before 1999, and died 17 years after that year.

Senor Wences died on this day 24 years ago, aged 103. - Senor Wences' real name was Wenceslao Moreno. - Wences learned to professionally juggle at the age of 15, and joined a circus troupe that was organized by some of his friends. - Wences soon became a ventriloquist, and toured Europe in the 1920s. He moved to the US in 1935 and took his act there. - Among his famous puppets were Johnny (seen in the above picture), whom he demonstrated in the 1947 film Mother Wore Tights, Pedro, which was a head in a box created after the full-sized dummy was destroyed in a train accident and had the catchphrase "s'alright", and Cecilia Chicken, an anthropomorphic hen that wore glasses. - Wences was a frequent guest on The Ed Sullivan Show, appearing a total of 48 times- below is one of them: - Wences was also a guest on The Muppet Show in 1980, introducing his talent to a new generation of viewers. - On his 100th birthday in 1996, Wences was made a lifetime member of the New York Friars' Club. - Wences died three days after his 103rd birthday. Sadly, his obit became second-page news due to the Columbine mass shooting that day.

Asahel Porter died on this day 248 years ago, aged 23. - You're probably wondering why I've chosen a seemingly insignificant person for today (I couldn't even find a portrait of him)- but he wasn't. - Porter was a clothing seller from Woburn, Massachusetts, following in his father Josiah's footsteps. In 1773, he married a Ms. Abigail Brooks and had a son, Asahel Jr (who was two months old when his father died). - On the morning of April 19, 1775, Porter and his brother-in-law Josiah Richardson set out on horseback to go to the Boston market. As they entered West Cambridge, the two of them were captured by British officers (possibly believing them to be associated with the Midnight Ride hours before)- despite their pleas of innocence, they were arrested and forced to accompany the troops to Lexington. - The British let the two go there under condition that they remain peaceful- Porter ran off in a panic (likely once the "shot heard round the world" was fired) and was killed from the ensuing exchange of gunfire between the minutemen and the redcoats. - In short, Porter's significance in history was that he was the among the first casualties of the American Revolution.

Tim Curry is... 77! Outside of Rocky Horror, It, and Home Alone 2, he also did some voice roles I'd like to show: Besides Hexxus, he also voiced Professor Calamitous in Jimmy Neutron and Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys. -

Dick Clark died on this day 11 years ago, aged 82. - Clark began as a radio host. In 1956, he became the host of the radio show Bob Horn's Bandstand after the titular host was arrested for a DUI (and subsequently fired). This was picked up by ABC in 1957 and renamed American Bandstand (which was the inspiration for Top of the Pops, which premiered in 1964). - He began hosting The Dick Clark Show in 1958. The guests on the first episode included (the late) Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnnie Ray, and the still living Pat Boone and Connie Francis. 20 million people tuned in weekly by December. - Clark was involved in the payola scandal in 1960 (when music companies paid broadcasters to favor their products). During this time, his press agent left him- that agent was Gene Shalit. - Clark soon began to host game shows, such as The Object Is, Missing Links, and The $10,000 Pyramid. He would compete as a celebrity guest in its revival series. - What Clark is best known for is Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve, which aired for the first time from 1972 into 1973- he did this to compete with Guy Lombardo's specials, believing his big band music was too old-fashioned. Clark would host every year until his death except for the 2004-2005 special, due to a stroke he suffered weeks prior (Regis Philbin took his spot). - Clark was the host for ABC's broadcast of Live Aid. - Clark made guest appearances on shows such as the Adam West Batman, Perry Mason, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. - He had his own production company. At one point, its logo looked like this: (emphasis on the first word)

Emperor Otho died on this day 1954 years ago, aged 36. - Otho was known for being vain- the first century historian Juvenal wrote that he would look at his reflection before going into battle, and that he would use dough as makeup. - Otho married the mistress of Emperor Nero, Poppaea Sabina. Nero wanted to marry her, so in the year 59, he forced him to divorce her, and appointed him the governor of Lusitania (modern-day Portugal) to get rid of him. - Otho would ally himself with Galba during his rebellion in 68 AD, and succeed him as emperor in January of 69. - Yet another rebellion began as soon as Otho became emperor, with legions in Germany allying with Vitellius. - Otho would commit suicide by stabbing himself in the heart. Some believe that he did it in order to avoid a full-scale civil war. - Otho was the second emperor of the Year of Four Emperors- Galba (January 69), Otho (January-April 69), Vitellius (April-December 69), and Vespasian (December 69).

John Jacob Astor IV died on this day 111 years ago, aged 47. - Astor was (of course) a member of the wealthy Astor family, who got their money from the fur trade. His sister Helen married a James Roosevelt- making him the half-brother-in-law of president Franklin D. Roosevelt. - Astor published a science fiction novel titled A Journey in Other Worlds in 1894, making predictions on what the year 2000 would be like. Among the things it got right was a global phone network (kind of like the Internet) and solar power. - In 1897, he built the Astoria Hotel- this soon became the original Waldorf-Astoria, which was demolished to construct the Empire State Building. - Astor served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War (rather than using his fame and money to buy himself out), and became a colonel. - Astor married his second wife Madeleine when he was 47 and she was 18. While in France, he got her pregnant, and he wanted their baby to be born in America. They boarded the RMS Titanic in Cherbourg along with their dog named Kitty. - After the ship fatefully scraped the iceberg on the night of April 14, Astor remained unconvinced the ship would sink- he and his wife went to the ship's gym, and he even cut open the lining of a lifejacket thinking it wouldn't work. - Astor eventually helped his wife into Lifeboat #4, and then ordered two female passengers to fill up the remaining seats. He was last seen alive at 1:55 AM on the starboard bridge, smoking a cigarette. - Astor's cause of death remains uncertain- reports stated that he either drowned, froze, or was crushed when the first funnel collapsed about 20 minutes after he was last seen. - At the time of his death, Astor was one of the world's richest people, with a net worth of $87 million (equivalent to $2.5 billion today).

Wilf Mannion died on this day 23 years ago, aged 81. - Mannion's professional soccer- I mean "football" career started in 1936 when he joined Middlesbrough FC, spending the next 18 years with them. - After leaving Middlesbrough, Mannion joined Hull City, Poole Town, Cambridge United, and Earlestown, before retiring in 1958. - Mannion was a member of the English team in the 1950 World Cup, scoring a goal against Chile. - Mannion's nickname "The Golden Boy" did not come from his skill at the sport- rather, it was his blonde hair. - Mannion was also a World War II veteran who served in France and Italy. His commanding officer was Hedley Verity, another sportsman- albeit a cricketer. - Mannion's only appearance on the DeathList was in 1996, at number 43.
