    I'd have thought he would have outlived the Carter couple

    The man was 93 years old, so it could be anything. Wikipedia speaks of natural causes (which can mean about anything).

This old man who clings with dignity to his cane seems weakened to the point of not being able to take a few steps to retrieve his luggage! After getting out of his seat, he had to get into a wheelchair because he seemed insecure on his legs...

    Alzheimer doens't kill you, it's the lung infections, dehydration and other related problems that does the trick.
