I think Broch, Dahl and Colonel Richard G. Candelaria, born in 1922, are the last three surviving aces. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_G._Candelaria https://valor.militarytimes.com/hero/385402 http://veterantributes.org/TributeDetail.php?recordID=2325

General Jaakko Valtanen died at the age of 98 on January 17. He took part in the Winter War as a 15-year old volunteer, serving as a runner (carrying messages) and radio operator. During the Continuation War, he graduated from the Reserve Officer School and served as a fire control officer in the coast artillery. In 1942, he was sent on a mission to Estonia, then occupied by the Germans. The conditions there were horrifying, and he heard stories unknown to the public in Finland. For instance, he met a young German soldier, who in Latvia had been ordered to shoot Jews. Valtanen continued his military career after the war, and was Chief of Defence the Finnish Defence Forces from 1983 to 1990. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaakko_Valtanen

Jaanus Jahilo tells the interviewers how Soviet Union "liberated" Estonia and "brought culture" there. This hearty smile is his way of assuring that the joke was correctly understood.

Jahilo and Roopalu both live in the Tallinn area. They are presented in today's Helsingin Sanomat. https://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/art-2000009857118.html Roopalu, here seen showing his medals, can also tell about the ordeals in the labour camps of Kolyma and Pechora. He spent many of his after-war years there, before being released in 1954.

Mäkinen may have been the last living person to have witnessed the shelling of Mainila on 26 November 1939 - the false flag operation used by the Soviet Union to justify the attack against Finland. The formula has been repeated a number of times since then... Mäkinen served in the Winter War, but during the Continuation War he worked as a cutter at the Tikkakoski Factory, producing thousands of Suomi submachine guns. He was part of the factory staff - now making sewing machines - until his retirement in 1983. Last Norwegian veteran from the Narvik Campaign, Eystein Røset, died on 23 December. He would have turned 104 years five days later. In the Battle of Gratangen on 25 April 1940, he saw 34 of his comrades being killed around him, and he was sure this would be his last moment as well. But he survived, and, later on, turned the bullet that hit him into a piece of jewellery.

Greetings. I regularly contribute to a thread about surviving & recently dead WWII veterans at Flashback, the main Swedish discussion forum. I've been following this thread for some months, and finally decided to register at Deathlist as well. In Finland, we now in November have lost two ex-ministers who participated in World War II. Heimo Linna, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry from 1973 to 1976, died on November 14 at the age of 96 (born in 1925). In 1944-45, he took part in the Continuation War against the Soviets and the Lapland War against the Germans. During the battle of Vuosalmi, he spent nine days in his foxhole. In a skirmish at Ranua against the Germans in October he was separated from his unit, and he played dead for several hours in order to avoid enemy bullets. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heimo_Linna https://www.ksml.fi/paikalliset/2579780 https://www.verkkouutiset.fi/a/ex-ministeri-pelastuin-sodassa-nayttelemalla-valekuollutta-en-pystynyt-kertomaan-asiasta-35-vuoteen-38098/#8167afaf Ele Alenius, born in 1925, Deputy Minister of Finance between 1966 and 1970, died on November 19. During the Continuation War, he served as Second Lieutenant in the coastal artillery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ele_Alenius Still alive is Taisto Tähkämaa, born in 1924, Minister of Defense between 1977 and 1979, and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry from 1979 to 1983. As an anti-tank gunner, he took part in the battle of Tali-Ihantala in June and July 1944, where he was wounded. He has described how the air was filled with noise and rumble, and how the roadside was dotted with smelling carcasses of dead horses. Once he saw three Soviet T-34:s approaching his post. He knew his own 37 mm cannon would not harm them, so he let them roll by. After a while, one of the tanks was hit by a shell from a Finnish 76 mm gun and stopped. The two other tanks drove off the road, but were stuck in the soft ground. Afterwards, Tähkämaa's fellow soldiers asked him if he had fired his cannon. He shook his head. You did the right thing, was their reply, otherwise you hadn't been here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taisto_Tähkämaa https://www.is.fi/suomi100/art-2000005265789.html Does anybody have information about WWII veterans among former Cabinet ministers or MEP:s in the U.S., Britain or other countries? In Norway, the last surviving member of Linge's Company / Norwegian Independent Company 1, August Rathke, died on November 25, at the age of 96. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Independent_Company_1 https://norway.postsen.com/news/70770/The-resistance-man-August-Rathke-has-died-aged-96-The-last-Linge-soldier-has-passed-away.html
