  1. I very much doubt that she'll know or care, but Joni has the number one single in the UK this week … Ellie Goulding's faithful rendition of 'River' (from Blue) kept Mariah, Wham! and co at bay and I imagine it'll hang around after all the other seasonal evergreens have fallen off the chart next week. The first Mitchell song to go to the top since 'Woodstock' almost half a century ago.

Also, way better than some shite about sausage rolls. I suppose Ladbaby has some sponsorship deal with Greggs by now.

  2. The Beast of Bolsover lost his seat on Friday - I was listening as the result came in around 5 a.m. Dennis was too ill - after a recent hip operation - to attend.

At 87, got to be a good choice for 2020 I'd have thought ...

  3. Timothy West will be best remembered as Edward VII, won't he? Looked like him several times last night, when he had the beard.  I enjoyed seeing the two of them last night though didn't realise it was a one-off. Probably worth putting both on for next year.

Francesca Anis was the young Lillie Langtry, I'm guessing.

Jacques Delors, former EU Commission President and subject of the famous “Up Yours, Delors” Sun headline is 94 today.

Was always very active but not done a televised interview since 2015 from what I can find.

    One to watch.

If they want another Jacques on the list next year, I guess he's the man. Plenty of punning possibilities too.

    Deathlist, Deathlist's number one

    Deathlist's number one!!

Especially as he would have worn the number one jersey, back in the day .. when all the keepers wore green ? Last time I watched football, in other words.

I guess DL 2019 was his final save.

Fondly remembered from … those weird coins they used to give away at petrol stations.

Shane MacGowan does regularly come up for consideration although frankly he has astounded us with his longevity so far.

It does seem that he's more on the rails now than a few years ago, however it seems unlikely he's ever going to be getting a 100th birthday telegram from the Queen. :P

Extremely unlikely I would say, given that Her Maj would herself be over 130 by then … most of us who make that milestone would get one from William V, I suppose - if they're still doing them by then.

I was going to say, surely not eligible? But he was born in Tunbridge Wells, of all places. Joint nationality, perhaps?

Former Sussex & England player, and Warwickshire coach, Alan Oakman has died aged 88.

He played twice for England,  most notably taking five catches to assist Jim Laker's nineteen wickets against Australia in 1956.

Oakman was at a dinner once, with Laker, and was introduced as 'the man who took all those catches off Jim Laker's bowling.' Laker piped up, "not still dining out on that, are you Oaky?"

Meanwhile here's one who got away, for now … brother of the much more famous Brendon.

  8. He was one of the 'dancing sailors' in that famous Morecambe and Wise routine wasn't he. Without watching it again I wonder how many from that are still around. I think Michael Aspel might have been one of them?

  9. Just discovered today, through his Times obit, that Michael Bettaney, an MI5 officer jailed for 23 years in 1984 for attempting to pass secrets to the Russians, died in August aged 68. I remember his case very well, probably because he lived in my home town of Coulsdon in Surrey.

That's pretty standard for him, Clarkson-level really. Wasn't there one famous British cricketer who was politically active among the extreme right?

Not sure what you'd call famous, but the old Sussex and England captain Arthur Gilligan would appear to fit that description - I believe his brother Harold was of similar views, but can't find conformation of that.
