  1. Son of the great Everton Weekes, who died only a couple of years ago. I wonder how much he did to help his errant son. Yes there was huge condemnation of the 'rebels' by the West Indies team at the time, but it was easy for the likes of Richards, Lloyd and Holding, all automatic picks, to say that they shouldn't have taken the South African money. Players on the fringe of the team like David Murray were barely scraping by in domestic cricket.

As the last surviving main regular, I was wondering if Jim Dale might be allowed his own thread outside of the Carry On one? I'll admit it'll likely not be an action-packed one.

I reckon the time might be fast approaching for a Jim Dale vs Ian Lavender thread.

  3. Not many old cricketers have left the crease of late. But Alan 'Froggy' Thomson who played against England in 1970-71, and also took the first wicket to fall in a one-day international (one G Boycott) is the latest.

I don't think he's actually demonstrating his 'unusual bowling action' in that photo. I'd have thought there were better images they could have used.

i’m oblivious of the notability of canadian artists outside of canada, but I was gonna include Gordon Lightfoot as a unique pick on my list.

turns 84 in a few weeks, has suffered from emphysema for years, and has a history of health problems; however, he’s still performing so it seems there may still be life in him yet

Pretty well-known in the UK I would say, and certainly listable. 'If You Could Read my Mind' is a stone cold classic.

  5. Can't help but wonder what Grant Schapps did wrong in his five days as Home Secretary ...

And as for Cruella, it would take a braver man than me to explain why she's back so soon. The Anti Tofu Coalition are responsible, I guess.

I could care less about money. but how the hell can someone whose never been skint or struggled a day in their life dictate how the rest of the country should be living.

Politicians in this and just about every other country tend to come from fairly comfortable middle-class backgrounds, though. That goes for all parties. Not necessarily Eton and Oxford, but they don't usually come from poor families. Angela Rayner is the only one I can think of who comes close. Maybe a handful of other Labour and SNP MP's would fit the bill.

  7. Over the next 24 hours I'm looking forward to seeing all those former supporters who bailed on him during the summer, going over to Truss when it seemed like his support was waning, now backpedalling furiously in a desperate attempt to land a plum job. I suspect Sunak will remember the names of all those fair-weather friends.

If that prick Miliband could eat a bacon sandwich properly we wouldn't be in this fucking mess.

It's enough to make you go vegan!

Or if Ed Miliband hadn't decided to stand against his brother in the first place. A rift that still hasn't been healed I gather.

  9. I suppose at 95 you're not that fussed about being out of a job. She actually retired as long ago as 2014, due to a battle with arthritis.

Sufficiently famous to be worthy of a slot in the 50 in her own right, I would say, and would make a fitting replacement for the Queen.

  10. If Sunak should take over, could he keep Hunt as Chancellor? At least he's a name people know (unlike Kwarteng) and sounded, I thought, as if he knew what he was talking about yesterday. He was basically saying there are no easy fixes, which was at least honest. We are in for a hard winter, and would be even if Labour were to win an election tomorrow.

  11. I suppose Harry could come on his own, but is a child's birthday really such a big deal? Archie will have many more birthdays, a Coronation comes along once in a generation. No doubt he will have to choose between his wife and his family, again.

Has a British monarch ever died before their official coronation?

The short answer is no, if you take 'British' to mean after the Act of Union in 1701. Prior to that, Edward V (April to June 1483) was deposed by his uncle Richard, confined in the Tower with his brother and never seen again. Sweyn Forkbeard (40 days in 1013-14) and Lady Jane Grey (July 1553) also went uncrowned, but they are disputed monarchs who don't appear on every list.
