We're into 'national treasure' territory now aren't we? Restricting it to the still living:
Carol Kirkwood
Joe Root
Mary Berry
I agree that Michael Palin is front-runner though.

I had a bf who used to say how much he thought of me then turned out to be with someone else so yah do relate there!
George is 9 years old, what's there to like? He may well turn out to be a fine young man but it's a bit soon to be forming an opinion.

One of the three (slightly) famous people that I have met - the other two being Micky Stewart and Gilbert O'Sullivan.
I don't think seeing the Queen's hat from 50 yards away counts, somehow.
The Oval was named after Micky (for the remainder of the season) in honour of his 90th birthday ... not sure whether he makes the fame test for the DL 50, though. I would still have Neil Harvey ahead of him if you're looking for a cricketer.

One that was missed from four years ago .... did most of her work in the eighties it seems, after which she had 'work done' and moved into the 'mature' market:

Grammatically, of course, it doesn't quite work. Charles would not have used the past tense to someone who was still queuing. But if he'd said "how long have you been waiting?" that doesn't work either, because he's not waiting any more.
I'm sure they'll get a letter to that effect.

Must try and pick up a copy this week.

Yes, I saw that. A day after that issue appeared she was dead. Sounds as if they had inside information as I didn't see any other hint that she was so close to the end - merely reports on Thursday morning that she'd been told to rest after meeting Johnson and Truss. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the cover, it's going to be a tricky line to tread.

Good luck dodging the angry mob. Though I'd be asking them, what are you doing out?

Cheers. So basically you get one just for joining the family, well the men anyway.
Anyone been out yet? I want to get a paper, I'm guessing the corner shops will be open at least.
-
Everyone knows the reasons why, but it does seem ironic that Harry and Andrew, the only two in the family who saw active service, are the two not allowed to wear uniforms. Edward never completed his Marines training did he? Yet he has a chestful of medals. And what on earth did Tindall get his for?

Apparently people are still turning up to queue - what are they thinking? They are being told 'you may not get a wristband.' Why leave it until now?

Really kind of regretting I didn't do it now, especially when I see all the young kids who did - but it was impossible to fit around work shifts. A couple of friends of mine did. Surprised they haven't closed the queue now - thought they'd have done that about 6 o'clock.
Interesting to see the heads of state turning up at Buckingham Palace. Biden alone (due to our Special Relationship) is the only one who gets to use his own transport. The odd thing for me is former heads of state - apparently Juan Carlos of Spain can go, but not Obama, Trump, Bush or Clinton? And what about Queen Beatrix? There should be some consistency there I think.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who had to read that twice.
I wouldn't say it annoys me, but it is irritating to hear the telly people keep saying 'King Charles III' as if we're all about to forget his name. Please, just start saying 'the King' - we'll all get used to it soon.

Just seen Lady Antonia Fraser, 90, royal historian (and Harold Pinter's widow) on the BBC news channel and she looks worthy of consideration - voice very croaky - surely one who would pass the fame test.
-
Down to Page Three already?
Already past Lady Jane (not included on all lists, tbf, see also Sweyn Forkbeard and Empress Matilda); Jane's 9 days could be bumped up to 13 though given that Edward VI died on 6 July 1553 and basically nothing happened for four days. No Deathlist then, obvs, or the young king might well have been on it.

I am confidently predicting that the funeral will tip this thread - maybe not to the 5.000 mark - but past 4,700 posts. What's the DL thread for a nominee?
-
Not quite, but Cnut seems to be the preferred spelling of Canute nowadays. Asking for trouble though if you ask me, I've already seen the inevitable typo in one history magazine.

My local pub is open, they're currently installing a huge marquee with screen and projector. Also they've just ordered double the usual amount of beer. Any pub not open that day will be missing out on their biggest afternoon's takings ever. I won't be going as I can only imagine the queue for the bar. Even on a usual lunchtime I have to order a 4 pint jug, to save queuing up 4 times.
I hate fucking queues! Therefore, there's no way I'm going to queue just see a covered coffin, especially if I can't lift the lid and peek inside. Who knows what's in it..... QE2 could still be alive and in exile for all we know!
Impressive that your local can do that sort of business in the midst of a cost of living crisis. I went into a boozer in Maidstone a couple of weeks ago and at 1.45 I was their first customer of the day.

I think it's because football fans can't be trusted to act with any sort of decorum whatsoever at a time of national mourning, unlike fans of cricket, rugby and horse racing. And I say that as a season ticket holder. The midweek fixtures are taking place.
It's not that hard to reschedule football matches is it - the Test match at the Oval is going on because otherwise it would have had to be cancelled (also, maybe coincidentally, the ground is owned by the new King).

None whatsoever, I would say. The personal popularity of William and Kate should ensure it is safe for decades to come. In the last few days there's been no shortage of commentators from other parts of the world telling us how the UK should be run. But around half the countries in western Europe are monarchies, it's not as if Britain's is the only one left.
Of course we don't know how George will turn out but it's impossible to imagine he could screw up as badly as Andrew or Harry, let alone Edward VIII. I won't be around to see him come to the throne, in any case.

Not straight away. In the case of the coins, not until next year.
Banknotes and stamps, in the next few weeks maybe.

But, yes, the king is the king regardless of what name we use.
Charles has had plenty of time to decide what name he was going to use. He didn't need to spend any longer chewing over it. Still, I know a lot of people were expecting George VII - partly as a tribute to the grandfather he never really knew.

Coronation set for 6 May then, four weeks earlier than many expected. A man in a hurry I guess ...
At least in terms of short-lived heads of state, he's already outdone William H Harrison and John Paul I.
