As for Geoffrey Hughes, although he was a relatively minor character in Coronation Street, he is a rather big name when you consider his more recent roles in 'Keeping up Appearances'...I thought he was one of the obscure Pommies I didn't know untl you mentioed that and it clicked with me that it is the bloke who played Onslow! Poor old Onslow is dying!!!
He is one of my role models...
He was a lazy vest wearing tinny drinking bastard of the 1st magnitude - top quality bloke. Although why he never dumped his missus (Daisy) and had a stab at her short skirted sister Rose ............
was always beyond me. And lets not forget his portrayal of Twiggy in the Royle Family - truly a Man for all Seasons.

The Diana Wynne Jones threadSurely Dora Saint (aka Miss Read who writes rather twee but very popular nostalgia books about rural schooldays) should be on the 2011 list as she is 98 this year.
Agreed - the Saint appears to be queuing for her final book signing. And the Thrush Green series deserves some recognition - apart from appearing in every charity shop bookshelf. However Miss Jones looks fairly poorly having given up the chemo - which seems to make people feel even less chipper.

I notice that Bill Tarmey looks a pretty good bet for 1st result of the year. It looks like his years of ashfelting and smoking have caught up with him finally. I watched Corrie in 1985 as it was the only English programme we could receive, He was there then and good luck to the bloke for playing himself for all those years. I see he had his first major heart attack before he joined the show so perhaps we should not write him off, but not being able to breathe is not normally surviveable. Cheers Jack

I was surprised about how aged he had become all of a sudden - he seemed so young but that is the trouble when you watch old TV reruns I suppose

Al Megrahi because according to the Scottish government in August 09 he had 3 months to live, that was like 7 months ago.He is good for a wee while I suspect - that was a diplomatic 3 months
