  2. Benedict XVI's secretary denies rumors that he is close to death

Vatican City, Oct 17, 2017 / 11:52 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Archbishop Georg Ganswein, the personal secretary of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, has rejected reports that the former pontiff is nearing death.
Rumors of Benedict XVI being close to death circulated on social media following a quote attributed to Ganswein, which reads, “Pope Benedict is like a candle that fades slowly. He is serene, at peace with God, with himself and the world. He can no longer walk without help and can no longer celebrate Mass.”
However, Archbishop Ganswein called this quote “pure invention.”
“It is false and wrong! I would like to know who the author of this is,” he said, according to German media outlet kath.net.
“I have received in the last two days many messages that refer to this phrase, and people are worried,” he said.
Last week, Ratzinger’s brother was at the Vatican to visit, and he has now returned home, Ganswein confirmed, adding, “Both had a good time.”

  3. A Coptic Catholic bishop of Egypt says Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is now very weak at age 90, but still “aware of everything.”

Bishop Kyrillos William Samaan of Assiut gave this report after a meeting with the Pope Emeritus at the beginning of September, according to the Swiss Catholic Information agency cath.ch in an article published today.

According to Bishop Samaan, he spent 45 minutes with Benedict XVI, who asked him about the various problems of the Church in Egypt, including dialogue with Muslims and the relationship with Al-Azhar University, the highest Sunni authority.

On September 23, the German news website Mittelbayerische reported that Benedict is now too weak to celebrate Mass by himself. Archbishop Georg Gänswein, his private secretary who is also prefect of the Pontifical Household, assists him. The Pope Emeritus will turn 91 on April 16.

  4. Prayers for Cardinal Cormac

    8017009958_00c2f4ac7c_o.jpg?thumb

Cardinal Vincent wrote to the Bishops of England and Wales and to all priests in our diocese to ask for prayers for Cardinal Cormac, whose health 'has taken a defining turn' and who is now in hospital.

Honouring Cardinal Cormac's wish to let the clergy and people know 'from his own hand', Cardinal Vincent said, 'It is my privilege to do so.'

Cardinal Vincent added: 'As you will know so clearly, for Cardinal Cormac these loving prayers are a source of great strength and comfort as he calmly ponders on all that lies ahead, all in God's good time.

'May the Lord strengthen him in faith and trust and may the prayers of the Church, which he loves so much, comfort and uphold him.'

  5. Kim Jong-nam has probably been assassinated.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's brother has been assassinated at an airport in Malaysia, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap News.
A South Korean government source told Reuters that Kim Jong-nam is believed to have been killed after being attacked by two unidentified female agents with "poisoned needles."
The suspects fled the scene and Malaysian police suspect North Korea was behind the killing.
Mr Kim went into hiding in Malaysia after the execution in December 2013 of his uncle, Jang Song-thaek, the once-powerful uncle of the current leader.
The eldest son of Kim Jong-il, he survived an assassination attempt in Macau in 2011
While he was widely seen as heir to the hermit kingdom's throne, he fell out of favour after being detained while trying to enter Japan on a forged passport along with two women and a child.
He said he wanted to visit Disneyland.
If confirmed, Kim's case would mark the most high-profile death under the Kim Jong-un regime since the execution of Jang Song-thaek.
Kim Jong-nam was born from his father's non-marital relationship with Sung Hae-rim, a South Korean-born actress who died in Moscow.

  6. Czech Cardinal Miloslav Vlk, 84, suffers from lung cancer with bone metastases and he will undergo chemotherapy, his website www.cardinal.cz has announced.
Vlk's health troubles appeared last spring and he had to be hospitalised before Christmas. Doctors diagnosed him with cancer in early January. Now he is staying in home care.
"He accepted the diagnosis calmly, when the professors announced it to him. It was he who supported them and assured that he is following the right path, since he believes that his departure is the best solution," the web writes.
In the autumn, Vlk stayed in a spa with joint pains, but his trouble further worsened afterwards. His left shoulder swelled and he suffered from dizziness.
On Christmas Eve, he was admitted to a coronary unit with heart rhythm disorder.
A CT scan and bronchoscopy confirmed lung tumor with bone metastases.
