  1. There wasn't a chicken joke as such, just that he used to impersonate one. ...The real joker in this package tour is Norman Collier, another Comedians graduate who has created two classic routines - walking on stage like a chicken and grappling with a microphone that keeps going on and off. Daily Express 2001

I'm just glad I'm too young to have seen the guy.

He as hi io . Tru y a tal .

I think I saw him in panto, though he wasn't the main star. One of those on that list that I did see was Russ Abbott, and he was genuinely great.

  2. Indeed - it's all very creepy. Richard Carpenter clearly had some weird fixation on his sister. He ended up marrying his cousin. Need any more be said?

He freaked out Cynthia Gibb during the making of The Karen Carpenter Story too.

I'm not sure about him actually being fixated by Karen though. I'd say it's more massive, though repressed, jealousy - he was arguably the talented one but Karen was the voice and as such I think he realised pretty quickly that without her he'd be nothing. He used to get very peed off about being considered merely Karen's piano player when he was so much more. But ultimately it's Karen's voice that we all remember.

I remember Judy Finnigan (it might have been Judi Spiers come to think of it) saying that he seemed "haunted", and I think that sums him up.

A most warm welcome Alphonsin, hope you stick around.

  3. If she is, I win nothing but my belief she is a fake is reaffirmed.

Does it matter if she is a fake though? The amount she's earned will have helped many live, and as long as those people aren't on your list then surely it's a good thing.

I actually think this latest trek has taken far more out of her than she or her family expected. If she is going to die, I reckon it'll be fairly soon. It'll only take a chest infection or something in her currently weakened state.

  4. there is no other artist in the world who has achieved

    the things that he did

he is 73 years old now and still doing the road

    1. 17 nr1 hits

    2. 198 chart entries

    3. about 170 albums

can your f***kers tell which other artist has achieved that

I bet Cliff's not far off.

  5. once been in the band Middle of the Road

It was definitely New Pickettywitch she was a member of, as Sally Carr was with Middle Of The Road pretty much from the beginning, or at least when it mattered.

I shall ask around re the name of 'Sheila Rossall', as I'm sure a few of the more geeky spods I know will remember. I also bet she's still alive. While she had a bugger of a 20th century, maybe she isn't allergic to the 21st century...

  6. Behold! Angies boring boobies:

    boringid7.th.png

They look like they're from the time of Gia, which is a superb film and well recommended, not least (for those on here who like that sort of thing) for the lezzer scene between Ms Jolie and Elizabeth Mitchell.

I can't quite make my mind up on her myself - she's kind of got that ugly-beautiful vibe to me.

  7. I think she's had an on/off weight problem for years, probably a natural porker

Yup. She's always battled with her weight. Then came middle age where her looks weren't quite so important and it's gone on from there. Her real weight problems have been from about 1990 onwards.

and therefore her late seventies early eighties slimness was taking more of a toll on her long term health than we realised. Looking at the cover of Hasten Down the Wind or Living in the USA she appears normal but if she's crash dieted and pigged out repeatedly she'll pay for it at this stage.

The coke might have helped to keep her weight down initially (she was quite the caner in her time) but I think now it's simply a combination of middle age and natural tendancy to porkiness.

  8. The bastion of accuracy that is Popbitch is saying that Charlie Drake is "about to pop his little clogs". Seeing as we they kill off Maureen Lipman every other week and sent Denis Norden to the great clipboard in the sky a few months back (not to mention the welcome news that Coldplay were splitting up... in 2001) I'd take any posts with a pinch of salt, unless they come from me of course.

    As you were.

  9. You might not know the name (and to be honest I'm not actually sure it is her name) but if you're a certain age you'll definitely remember the story...

Sheila Rossall was "the girl who [was] allergic to the 20th century" and swapped headlines every week in the News Of The World with Lena Zavaroni as newsworthy ill girls. Formerly the singer of New Pickettywitch - not to be confused with Pickettywitch, though to this day Polly Browne gets asked about her health due to this story - she was last heard of living in an oxygen tank in Texas, with not long to live because the money for her treatment was running out.

Whatever happened to her? Did she get better? Did she die? There were rumours that she was a fake but nothing was ever proven. The net has scant information about her, and most of that is people wondering whatever happened to her (including a fair amount of posts from me, because I'm sad like that <_< ).

Opening up the gauntlet here - anyone?

  10. Aerosmith's bass player Tom Hamilton has been diagnosed with throat cancer

Aerosmith haven't had much luck with throats recently have they?

As for Linda Ronstadt, she seems to be ill every other month. Never anything life threatening, but I'd figure a lot of it is nothing that losing about 5st would harm (actually, doesn't she have a thyroid problem that hasn't helped her weight - she's always veered towards porkiness though even at the height of her success in the 70s). Unless her recent health scare does turn out to be somethign serious I really don't think she's a contender to be honest.

  11. According to Haaretz his urine output has decreased significantly. I'm not sure I wanted, or needed, to know that. His brain function's going on the blink too.

I'm going to repeat what I said here - while the current hoohah between Hezbollah and Israel continues it would be very foolish to announce his death. Let's see how the ceasefire goes and hopefully Sharon will hang on for at least another 4 1/2 months

  12. You're going to Israel for a holiday VT? Could I interest you perhaps in an upcoming tour of Helmand province or maybe the Bazra illuminations in October. They say Darfur is nice at that time of year where you can sample true Janjaweed hospitality. Or there's Skegness.

Not sure I'd get into either Afghanistan or Iraq with an Israel passport stamp but thanks for the suggestions (I'll pass on Skeggy if it's all the same)

Were it not for the cat I'd be in Israel at this very moment - would have flown in about the very time the rockets started flying. I miss all the fun.

  13. I don't think he's going anywhere soon to be honest. I reckon news of his death would be taken as a sign of Israeli weakness, what with Olmert not being a military man and so on. Can't see any announcement being made while the Lebanon crisis continues.

No doubt Sharon's death will be announced about, ooh, two days into my Israel holiday, so I'll make it sometime in early 2007.

  14. Tony Ogden, frontman of early Nineties Manc popsters World Of Twist has died. Strange chap apparently with many hang-ups (I went to college with someone who lived next door to his gran and so heard all sorts about him). Still v sad though - Sons Of The Stage is a classic.

  15. caption_competition_001.jpg

    Jane, pre-cancer, allegedly.

Even people in Rothwell don't wear that colour. And as for that peggy purse... :D

Terminal cancer is always a tricky one. It can mean weeks to live, it can mean - in the case of my auntie for one - seven or so years before she popped her clogs (or running shoes in Jane's case). A better way of putting it would be 'inoperable' cancer, thus terminal but something else might get them beforehand.
