  1. Haven't got proper confirmation other than this Reddit thread but Babes In Toyland guitarist-singer Kat Bjelland has stage 4 liver failure and is not eligible for a transplant.

Really sad news. They were always phenomenal live, and also were responsible for my first - and last - stagedive and the only time I've been properly assaulted at a gig (some arsehole thumped me right in the face at Reading 1993).

Now that the nation is in need of a new national hero I'd like to put my name in the ring.

After 11 months of doing next to fuck all, 100 laps of my garden is about the extent of my current physical fitness.

So many? I think I could manage 10 max at the moment.

I really struggle with "Naypyidaw".  It would be much easier if the capital was Yangon and they went back to calling it Rangoon.

See also Almaty, Colombo and Lagos. I'M TOO OLD TO BE LEARNING NEW CAPITAL CITIES

My old man refers to the whole of the Netherlands as “Holland”. That’s one that bugs me.

Oh, and as a Scot, visiting the States and hearing folk referring to the whole of the U.K. as “England”.

I have too many Dutch friends to call NL 'Holland'...been there, done that, had people hissing through gritted teeth "Holland's a province".

Saying that, you rarely hear the Dutch football team being referred to as 'The Netherlands'. Odd.

He did like Tubs de Pfeffel so, in a sense,  he had it coming.

Me and Kate Bush quite liked Theresa May and had hopes for her. Your point?

And before anyone pipes up "Tory!", lest we forget Kate wrote (admittedly in jest for a Comic Strip film) 'Ken'.

    Bollocks.

    Bollocks.

The Queen or Paul McCartney, probably. I'd say Cliff but there'll be too much snide and snark when he goes, sadly.

2021 killing off the plot threads from 2020.

Ah he was just a frail old man who loved the NHS (it having saved his life months before covid hit) - I don't think he was in full compos mentis understanding of everyone else from family to government running the Captain Tom thing as meme.

That's my opinion too. He was just someone who happened to get lucky that his charity walk went viral and ballooned. That's it. Plus he was of the generation that fought in WW2 - I stress I don't know the full details and only going by Wikipedia, but while I can't imagine serving in Burma was a bundle of laughs, I can't find anything that suggests heroism above and beyond the call of duty, nor was he a POW. Though it can be argued all those who fought in the war were heroes, there's nothing to suggest he was anyone special. Just a nice, ordinary man who got lucky late in life with a news story that blew up.

All that said, RIP. Sad news, but not unexpected.

     There are no famous Burmese.

Granted Aung San Suu Kyi is by far the most famous person from Burma, but Richard Beckinsale was famously half-Burmese (and so Kate and Samantha are also part-Burmese). Also the radio reviewer/writer Sue Arnold is half-Burmese - I wish I'd known she was more-or-less blind when I worked with her as it used to drive mad trying to type what she was dictating, I thought she was just making it up on the hoof. Oops.

    Some of us never left.

I still use Burma and Rangoon too. Mind you, I still say Calcutta and apparently Bangalore was renamed 'Bengaluru' in 2007! No, me neither.

My main problem with 'Myanmar' is that I'm not sure how to pronounce it - I've heard both Mee-anmar and My-anmar on the BBC, which is normally a good arbiter on such things.

    September - DIANA RIGG :(

I'd go with Diana Rigg for September too. I know Ruth Bader Ginsburg was important but she didn't marry James Bond or kick ass in The Avengers, did she?

As for August - I'd go for John Hume (I'd say Benny Chan but his death got surprisingly little coverage considering the films he made). I genuinely have little idea who Chadwick Boseman was as I have zero interest in the Marvel franchise.

  11. Leaders nearly always age quickly. Even David Cameron's looking rough, though I hope that's due to the torment of knowing he's destroyed the UK and I hope he suffers forever more with no respite.

As for Blair - the long hair on top doesn't suit him, the (now) high forehead isn't flattering and makes him look rather haggard, and his lips have lost their plumpness which is always a sign of ageing. Plus he's never got those awful bottom teeth fixed. Otherwise he strikes me as pretty healthy.

The one thing that would keep Madonna more in the middle of that is another stunningly good album. Dunno if Madonna has that in her.

Admittedly I'm not the most discerning or critical Madonna fan to put it mildly, but I thought 'Madame X' was amazing. For the first time since 'Confessions...' it sounded like she was enthused, like it was something *she* wanted to do, she was following her own path, rather than being dictated to collaborate with current pop stars/producers by the record label.

I'm not sure what the future holds though, other than the forthcoming(?) Madame X Tour DVD and she's currently prepping for a life story biopic or documentary of some kind - I'd love her to make one last album with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray, but the injuries she sustained during the Madame X tour will surely have to make her re-evaluate her live shows in the future. While she is in tip-top shape, her body will simply not let her do the things she used to be able to do. Bodily at least, her age is catching up with her and I suspect it came as a real shock to her.

Suu Kyi has had so many health problems during the years and looks frail as a skeleton. Could have her former "archenemy" Than Shwe on the list too, the diabetic 85 (or 87)-year old rumored to have cancer.

Have you ever seen a fat Burmese person? I haven't. They seem to have a natural willowly frame.

Agree about Suu Kyi though, but I think it depends how this coup pans out. Saying that, she's not getting any younger - will be 76 this year.

  14. Sad news but a grand age. I know her best as Phyllis in The Mary Tyler Moore Show - not quite as scene-stealing as Nancy Walker but not far off. I've never seen The Last Picture Show (I know...) and last saw Young Frankenstein well over 30 years ago so can't really comment on her film career but seemingly v impressive. RIP.

  15. Tom Stevens, bassist with the Long Ryders has died. No cause given other than "suddenly".

Very sad news - the Long Ryders were a fantastic band, and one I've never quite managed to see live (in around 2002ish I was working not 500 yards from Leeds Irish Centre but couldn't sneak out to see them without being noticed, and their more recent London dates were stupidly priced so had to give 'em a swerve).

Her and Le Carre were half-siblings, weren't they?

Either way, for Rock Follies fans, v.sad.

Yeah, half-siblings. Famously was partially the inspiration for the lead in The Little Drummer Girl, which she auditioned for and, err, didn't get.

  17. Clive Merrison on Twitter has reported the death of actress Charlotte Cornwell, best known as Anna in 'Rock Follies', and also the sister of recently-deceased John Le Carre.

Really sad news - she was fab in 'Rock Follies'.

  18. Love her, cannot stand her voice - even on 'As Tears Go By'.

And although she states in the Guardian article that doesn't like being thought of as a muse, I've always thought her and Jane Birkin ought to do a double-header gig. It would be a wonderful evening.

Also, Marianne as 'God' in Ab Fab is the greatest piece of casting ever imho.

I met him once when Red House Painters played Leeds Duchess Of York. He was a right miserable git.
