I can't go into details but I attended the funeral of a hit that I got a few years ago on the Derby Deadpool.

Here is a PROPER, not People magazine (????) obituary https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/college-football/article-13954125/North-Carolina-Tylee-Craft-dies-23-cancer.html

It depends what you mean by missing. Boston 25 News, Deadline (even just for the name alone !!) Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, Niagara Gazette, Pensacola News Journal, Rolling Stone, Texas Tribune, The News-Gazette, The Register-Herald, Beckley, W.Va. and vibe have all provided obits for people that have been picked this year. If you look at the list of the lost - how do we know they have died? Because some obscure publication has said so. But they do not count - not because they are not dead, but possibly because UK Yahoo has not copied and pasted from one of the publications that are NOT allowed. For me part of the game is not just identifying who is going to cark it in a particular year but whether they are going to croak AND get a mention in one of the qualifying publications. When UK (aye, that is a joke!!!) Yahoo copies and pastes an article from the Lhasa Evening Post in Tibet it somehow counts as a QO but the Lhasa Evening Post does not. It is called the Derby Deadpool for a reason. In my humble opinion points being awarded because of QO's from articles copied and pasted from some of the ones I mentioned above detracts from the main ethos of a UK centred game. Apologies to those from further afield but this is just my opinion.

Am I missing something here? I thought MSN was removed from the list of sources a number of years ago?

I have had a look at last years DDP. 2023 saw 312 hits Of these 47 (just over 15%) had UK Yahoo as the official death Notice Of these 47 I have subsequently found OTHER QOs for 28 of them, leaving 29 with no other QO save from Yahoo Of the YAHOO QOs, Yahoo has simply copied and pasted articles from sources that are NOT QO sources. These include, but are not limited to • Associated Press • Bloomberg • Boston 25 News • Deadline • Hollywood Reporter • Los Angeles Times • Niagara Gazette, Niagara Falls, N.Y. • Pensacola News Journal • Reuters • Rolling Stone • Texas Tribune • The News-Gazette, Champaign-Urbana, Ill. • The Register-Herald, Beckley, W.Va. • USA Today • Vibe Quite a few of the Yahoo links no longer work so I couldn’t see what source they copied and pasted from. If USA Today and the Pensacola News Journal count as QOs when the UK Yahoo search engine publishes them why can’t USA Today and the Pensacola News Journal count as QOs in their own right? These are the scoring hits that I can only find Yahoo as a QO https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_J.html#johnsoe023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_B.html#balabaj022 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_G.html#griffir023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_O.html#odonob023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_D.html#dickerh023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_D.html#defong023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_S.html#shakurm022 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_F.html#field9f122 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_W.html#weickel021 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_E.html#edelstg023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_Z.html#zimmerr023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_A.html#amese https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_J.html#januad https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_A.html#alqura023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_S.html#stevena022 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_R.html#riordar023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_V.html#vinsonr023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_S.html#saintyjx19 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_R.html#russelmx19 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_H.html#haskinf023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_R.html#richbo https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_N.html#nietoa99x19 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_T.html#tworib023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_Y.html#yunh023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_C.html#calvinj023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_B.html#brehmel023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_J.html#jeong9y022 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_B.html#baadans023 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_D.html#duncana022 https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_T.html#tarso9i020 https://www.bbc.com/mundo/noticias-64929455 ***BUT NOT IN ENGLISH These are the hits that have Yahoo as the official death notice but for which I have found additional QOs for. https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_W.html#whitth https://www.independent.co.uk/tv/news/us-harry-whittington-dick-cheney-b2277004.html https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_P.html#pinseg https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-11795577/Gordon-Pinsent-popular-Canadian-actor-starred-Away-Blacula-dead-92.html https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_B.html#butleb https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/apr/14/bill-butler-obituary https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_U.html#ulrict https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2024/01/30/torben-ulrich-tennis-jazz-film-lars-metallica-died-obituary/ https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2023/celebs_A.html#attaguq021 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2023/12/21/qapik-attagutsiak-last-inuit-inuk-bones-munitions-war/? Further, if someone who is better at stats than me can ascertain how – if at all – ridding the copy and pasting bot at UK Yahoo as a QO source would effect the result. I THINK IT IS TIME TO SHOW YAHOO THE DOOR. Thanks for reading. DaaS

I have looked at January to March 2024 While a number have UK.NEWS.YAHOO.COM as their Qualifying Obituary most have other qualifying sources too. From January to February I could only find these hits that have no other QO source other than yahoo . . . 25 January 2024 Roger Donlon 15 February 2024 Alexis Buchman 27 February 2024 Richard H. Truly 29 February 2024 Paul Vachon 3 March 2024 Eleanor Collins Of course, just because I can't find an alternative QO to yahoo does not mean that there isn't one - it just means that I can't find one.

I picked him in 2021

Another JOCK AWAY :-) Only 17 more to go.

I think that one of the best features of the DDP is the fact that it does have a finite list from which a QO can come, which is why I am so against Yahoo being a source. I know that some dead pools have a committee - or politburo - who decide if someone is famous enough for inclusion. Apart from FFBI picks I love the fact that we rely on journalists at reputable(ish) news organisations to write about the deaths of "famous" people. IMHO it is madness that an obit from a source that is not acceptable suddenly becomes acceptable because a bot at Yahoo has picked it up. I do not think that a death reported in the Flying Fish Cove gazette should be allowed as a QO, even if the yahoo bot picks it up. In my view the only Yahoo obits that should count are those that reference one of OUR QO's - which would make yahoo redundant, though it COULD help if a real QO gets archived leaving the Yahoo obit the only available version. If yahoo is permitted then why not (god forbid!) Wikipedia? (OK - I know why Wiki is not allowed) As for the Carrie Hamilton situation which cost me a third DDP title in 2002 I have no complaints. The rules were (and still are) the rules. She did not get a QO because the UK media did not deem her famous enough. This is just my tough luck and bad judgement on my part. Thems the breaks.

I suspect that including uk.news.yahoo.com news will NOT make a significant difference - which raises the question as to WHY it is included at all? A mention of a death in telegraph.co.uk, thetimes.co.uk, ft.com, theguardian.com, dailymail.co.uk, express.co.uk, dailystar.co.uk, thesun.co.uk and many many more DOES COUNT as a QO A mention of a death in uk.news.yahoo.com news which COPIES AND PASTES THE EXACT SAME ARTICLE from ....telegraph.co.uk, thetimes.co.uk, ft.com, theguardian.com, dailymail.co.uk, express.co.uk, dailystar.co.uk, thesun.co.uk and many many more DOES COUNT as a QO HOWEVER - a mention of a death in www.wfla.com, space.com or www.theinverBallachulishGazette.Scot ( to name a few) does NOT count as a QO - HOWEVER the exact same article that DOES NOT COUNT AS A QO DOES count if someone copies and pastes them into the uk.news.yahoo.com site.
-
Would the scoreboard look significantly different if Yahoo news (which merely copies and pastes articles from publications that are NOT allowed for QOs) was removed as a valid source of QOs? I find it absurd that a reference to a death written in (say) The Grindelwald Gazette is NOT a QO, but a copy and paste of the exact same article on uk.news.yahoo.com news IS a QO.
