    Stan Lee

At such an old age it gets increasingly unlikely that someone would live for another 5 years, especially if they have recently lost their significant other after a long marriage. I feel that Stan Lee became noticeably frailer in the last couple of years, and the reports about sexual harrassment might indicate that his mental faculties are also waning. Even if the irregular heartbeat is a chronic problem, it could be fixed by a pacemaker, but I just don't think that he'd become a centenarian.

He also looks a little bit like Michel Houellebecq on his bad days, although Michel might outlive him by decades (although I don't think that he'd become a centenarian):

Maybe he's in a worse state than I'd thought. We will just have to see. I guess we've got our answer even sooner than I thought. His death is not at all surprising considering all the bad news about him from late 2017. He may have been one of the less famous candidates on this year's list, but his early death and instant BBC/Mirror obits surely justify his inclusion. Good pick.

    Leah Bracknell

Yeah, she seems to be an outlier, although she might also be a bit younger than the average lung cancer patient. That being said, the American Cancer Society does have 5-year-survival statistics for stage IV patients (that might also be a bit more recent than cancerresearchuk.org's statistics from 2002-2006). Assuming she has Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (because she claimed her cancer was not caused by smoking according to her doctors): https://www.cancer.org/cancer/non-small-cell-lung-cancer/detection-diagnosis-staging/survival-rates.html

Nice. I don't think she looked or sounded as someone in death's door. Sure, she was gaunt (and fairly pale), but she has never been fat. I think she might not be the first hit of the year, but it's only mid-January, so I don't think people picking her on the DDP should be particularly worried.

Yeah the sudden and unexpected death and the lack of an immediate explanation (cause of death) might suggest suicide or accidental death due to intoxication (overdose on drugs [either illegal or prescription a la Heath Ledger]). Or it could have been as simple as a heart attack. I think we'd need to wait for the autopsy results to be sure.

    Paul Gascoigne

Hats off to him, he really does have a big heart. It might be, although I'm sure that there are people who hate him for other reasons, like… wasting his immense talent, being an alcoholic and acting really stupid at times (especially if he is drunk, which is often the case). E.g. [on how he impressed fans at Italy's Lazio football club as a real English gentleman:]

No questions about that, it's attributed to a very trustworthy and reliable source: But seriously, they don't even dare to name the darn company, they must be shit scared of a lawsuit.

    Michael J Fox

Some people allege that before he gets filmed for something like that he sometimes "forgets" to take his medication to gain sympathy. I'm not saying that these rumours are true, but if they are, you might overestimate his chances of dying this year.

    Isabel Peron

Well, we could say that she might be worth considering, since she is an interesting historic figure (both as president and as the last wife/vice-president of Juan Perón), but I have the feeling that this might be a peaceful thread (until she dies), since she wanted to keep a low profile ever since she moved to Spain and now that Argentina's extradition requests were refused, she will probably stay out of the limelight. Do we have any recent-ish news about her health? Also, I guess this thread might need to be renamed "Isabel Perón" (or "Isabel Peron") without the diminutive (-ita), cause that's the name most English speakers would search for, likely missing your thread.

No that can't be a coincidence, the weakening of bones is indeed a well-known symptom of secondary breast cancer in the bones: https://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/information-support/secondary-metastatic-breast-cancer/secondary-breast-cancer-diagnosis/secondary-breast-cancer-in-bone

    Ideas and Possibilities for 2019

He was likely not included for the same reason he was not included last year: the Committee thought that he does not meet the fame threshold. To be more precise, I guess a lot of people have got to know him by now, but he's known in the U.K. mostly for the fact that he has cancer (and the DL's rules state that candidates must be famous for something other than their reduced life expectancy). Most people only know his name because a successful fundraising campaign (based on Robbie Rotten memes) that was launched for him after his cancer diagnosis by the producer of Lazy Town. While a part of the British public may have been aware of the show before that, or even know Robbie Rotten as a character, but not the obscure Icelandic actor that provided his voice.

    John McCain

Well, he might soon become a hospice patient. I mean, he is probably not at that stage yet, but it's gonna be a long and hard year for him. And as for his mother: paradoxically, if she is still lucid and alert, she might be worse off if she needs to cope with the death of her son. If she were a living zombie, like Zsa Zsa was in her final years, she wouldn't even notice it (just like Zsa Zsa was not aware of the death of her daughter Francesca when she died).

    Stefan Karl Stefansson

I wish your pal Danny all the best, and I hope he still has many good years in him, but multiple myeloma and bile duct carcinoma are totally different types of cancer and thus his case cannot be compared to Stefan's. Multiple myeloma is almost always (95%) diagnosed in the "distant" stage, yet 48.4% of these patients survive for at least 5 years. On the other hand, less than 3% of people with stage IV liver and intrahepatic bile duct (or extrahepatic bile duct) cancers survive for (at least) 5 years. And the 1-year rates are also rather poor: Source: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/bile-duct-cancer/survival (note that the above rates are for all stages, the rates for stage IV are likely much worse)

He seems to be a not-so-mainstream British institution. Granted, he might not be a household name, but his death would still get covered by the British media. (But yeah, it's unlikely that the Zimbabwean or American media would follow suit.)

    Andy Fordham Memorial Darts Thread

He has since told the media that although the loss of his foot was a shock for him, he was glad to be alive and expressed his hopes that he could still play in a World Championship in a few years. (While I highly doubt that, I think he'd be safe for a good 40-50 years.) http://www.omroepbrabant.nl/?news/273132562/Darter+Toon+Greebe+blijft+positief+na+voetamputatie+Zeker+dat+ik+nog+een+WK+speel.aspx Well, he didn't. And it wasn't even close, although he beat his best average in the tournament, he never even had a chance, Cross played as brilliantly as van Gerwen did last year. The fat old man didn't look like he is ever gonna become a centenarian, although he might still have a few good years in him. Deathlist potential in 2030 perhaps.

    Ronnie Wood

Yeah, regardless of the (not that significant) age gap, Ronnie might be a better choice, since recurrent/metastatic lung cancer is usually terminal and he forwent adjuvant chemotherapy to preserve his hair. (A bit vain – I certainly wouldn't have done that with two very young kids.)

As for the actual health problems, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse in late 2017. Leah Bracknell

#2 She will almost certainly die this year and has generated quite a few headlines lately, but let's be honest: who would've cared about her (now that she is nothing else but a Yoga instructor) if she wasn't a young-ish cancer mum with a terminal illness?

    Valery Giscard d'Estaing

Now that they chose Giscard, I'm sure that Chirac and Delors will go before him. Not a bad choice, but not a dead cert either.
