On the volunteering thing, I have no problem with those who want to do things voluntarily, for free, for nothing, nada, zip. If you want or need that on your CV, good for you.
However, I learnt under several Governments that working (because that is what it is) for nothing is precisely what they would like you to do. As does business - see the we'll train you for some weeks if that doesn't work out, we'll kick you out and get another wide-eyed idiot in to do the same.
Where was the promise of well paid high skilled jobs they were talking about oh so recently? I'll tell you - that really was for all the legal immigrants from far and wide, not for you Brits. To allow the financiers and computer folk from America to come in. To allow Sunak and his predecessors to give those jobs to the public school pals and their business mates, not you Brits.
If you are prepared to work for nothing, you can see the greedy buggers at the top salivating at the money they will make while you do the job for them for free.
The idea now is, you aren't prepared to do it for free, so we will force you to do so.
Don't we already have a volunteer scheme for young people that Cameron brought in? The National Citizenship Service or something? Sure the acronym is NCS, it gets mentioned in school periodically.

Thanks for finding this. I didn’t have the energy to back up my comment with actual stats because it was in reply to Crem and he never does.It seems, though, that this National Service bullshit is to shore up the vote of a very select few people. National Service hasn’t been a thing since 1939, 85 years ago, so those backing it have no experience of it but because they’re full of spite and bile they want the youth of today to have to endure it.
Makes me even more glad Labour are lowering the voting age to 16.
National Service was ended in 1960, 15 years post-war. With terms of service to be completed, the last National Servicemen were discharged in 1963. 60 years later and apparently our return to the 1960s is nearly complete. Out of Europe, National Service returning, he'll be calling for the death penalty next week.

Just watched it live. Absolutely brilliant. First time in ages that I've had absolutely no option but to pay 100% attention to an episode of Who, I just couldn't look away. The woman gave me chills throughout. So clever (even though the solution crossed my mind quite early on) but still leads to many more questions in this curious series. Millie Gibson's brilliant. No more for now because...

Convention is that the resignation honours pass without issue. Although Sunak refused a couple of Truss's I believe, and Boris wasn't allowed to ennoble his dad. Jesus! The naked corruption of this lot! Breathtaking.

I'm concerned how many 'Lords' there's going to be after this election. Lord Gove? Lord Shapps? Lord Hunt? Baroness Patel?

Right next door to me - this would be sweet. Take your knighthood and fuck off! I saw an astonishing suggestion a few weeks ago that Labour could take the Ribble Valley here and despose Nigel Evans, which would be unheard of.

Oh, that's a shame. I was actually coming here to post from an article I just read in today's 'i', from Christopher Hope, former Telegraph reporter, GB News political editor and friend of Craig Mackinlay, about his personal view of his inspirational recovery. All it did was remind me that how ever awful his illness and how impressive his recovery, defeating him was essential:
"Despite his illness, Mackinlay had been politically active. He had secretly organised a Tory backbench rebellion over Government electric vehicle quotas from his hospital bedside, barking instructions to his mobile phone because his hands were useless. On another occasion, he has hosted an in-person meeting of the officers of the European Research Group of Conservative MPs from his hospital bed."
So, in other words, wanker, basically.

Plus increasing the popularity of smaller parties makes them more viable as an alternative. The reason the Greens may win Bristol Central is because Brighton Pavilion has had a Green MP for 14 years and is still perfectly fine (and an excellent MP she has been, we'll miss Caroline Lucas).

It was ok for Westminster when there was a little dribble of SNP MPs, when there was a lot of them, the old English Nationalism took hold. I have seen empty benches recently on E&W legislation, but perhaps that is out of deference rather than law.
I'd have thought we'd have heard of a Scottish MP being able to become PM again, if it had been reversed. Note, it is still open to Labour or the Tories when back to change the rules again.
The reason you've not heard of a Scottish MP becoming PM again is because despite an upturn in form, there are still barely more Tory MPs in Scotland than panda bears in Edinburgh Zoo (the old ones are the best). David Mundell is not Prime Ministerial material.
And, of course Westminster can change the rules, that's why you had an independence referendum!

Strange scenario really, as it may not be a wasted vote as the Greens may win, but would be costing Labour a seat as it's currently red. But I don't think an extra Green voice in Parliament in what should still, hopefully, be a sizeable Labour majority is a bad thing. I've voted Green once before: in the unexpected European elections in 2019 when Brexit was dragging on - I succeeded in helping get a Green MEP representing the North West...briefly.

As a complete aside from this game, and to empathise with some players in the game, I have never felt older than I do watching the end of Radio 1's Big Weekend on BBC1. Thought I was on safe ground with Coldplay but they've now shown back-to-back tracks by Teddy Swims and Sabrina Carpenter and I have no fucking scooby who either of those people are. Songs were OK. Now on Cat Burns, who I have at least heard of, but beyond that, nada.
