  1. Good list and good research on your part Joey, and thanks for taking the time to do this especially since the 69-71 club was originally my idea. I personally would never have the time or make the effort to compile a list like this, just being a casual deathlister myself.

A couple of favourites of mine - John Wetton of Asia/King Crimson and Chris Squire of Yes - were slightly too young when they died to be on this list.

So who do I expect might we see on this list in the future? Possible names include...

    Phil Collins
    Ozzy Osbourne
    Tom Waits
    Rick Wakeman
Mark E. Smith (but really it's a 50/50 whether he will die before then)

  2. With the death of Sir Roger Moore on the same day as news of the Manchester bombing broke, I thought to myself that it's unfortunate that he had to die when he did as his death would have been a bigger news story if it had happened on a different day.

Aside from Roger Moore, what other badly timed celebrity deaths have there been? As in, ones that conflict with a major news event or disaster? Joe Cocker's death conflicted with the Glasgow bin lorry crash and was 3 days before Christmas which wasn't great timing. Any others?

  3. I know I'm late but who would have expected that yet another of grunge's icons would die by suicide in the 2010s? He had a wife and young kids too. Just goes to show that fame and fortune does not necessarily mean happiness.

With Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland and Chris Cornell all dead, that leaves Eddie Vedder as the only major grunge band frontman still living!

You telling me that Dara and Angela are fucking robots???!!!!

Not sure about Dara, but I am sure that a convincing and realistic robotic Angela would be like the #1 selling sex doll in the world if such a thing was ever created

  5. I was actually at the filming of Robot Wars on Sunday and I'm going again tomorrow.

First time I've ever been to the filming of a TV show. Saw Dara O'Brien and Angela Scanlon as well as some of the more famous robots and their teams, was good fun.

  6. It's very true what it says on the front page - too often the DL is accused of inappropriately celebrating the deaths of famous people.

But for people who were scum anyway there's nothing wrong with being pleased to learn of their deaths, and that definitely applies here.

Also, we needed another hit as it's been a slow year and particularly the last two months have been very slow for death!

No I lived in the same village. He was just across the road.I actually saw the original Brum as he used to bring it out of storage for village festivals. He also created noo noo out of teletubbies I believe.Great guy.

Didn't realise he created Noo Noo.

Anyway, some sad news about Rex. He's still alive but according to rumours going about on various forums he's suffering from dementia:

    He's also Wiki-notable:

Cassius? Did you live next door to Rex Garrod or was it one of the other guys on the team?

Garrod wasn't just a competitor in Robot Wars - he also designed the miniature car from the classic '90s kids TV show Brum. If you're of a similar age to myself you're likely to remember that one.

  9. Anyone else watch the grand final last night? Here it is on iPlayer - if you've got a spare hour today and you're even remotely interested in metal machines smashing each other up you won't want to miss this...

That Carbide is an absolute beast of a machine - known for its infamous "death hum". Hmm, that seems appropriate on this forum. Some people think Robot Wars is just for kids but these machines are more than powerful enough to kill a human being and some of them can even rip through bulletproof material.

New series is being filmed in Glasgow next month.

  10. Allan Holdsworth, the greatest guitarist no one's ever heard of, dead at 70:

No mentions of his death that I can see in mainstream news media, only on specialist music magazines and sites. But of course, he's not got "mass pop appeal" so he doesn't matter, right?

The man was an absolute guitar genius. The bands that he's played in read like a who's who of 70s avant-prog - Soft Machine, Gong, Bruford, U.K., Nucleus, Tempest ...

Could have sworn he was a member of National Health and If as well but apparently not!

Will leave you with this video showcasing his excellent guitar playing!

Steve Howe of Yes is 70 today....putting him squarely in the Reaper's wheelhouse if recent rock n rollers are any indication.  Granted, Howe has looked like death warmed over for 20 years.

He'll be around a while yet.

    J. Geils, guitarist and founder of the rock group The J. Geils Band, has died aged 71. The band had various hits in the American charts, including Lookin' For A Love (#39, 1971), Give It To Me (#30, 1973), Must Of Got Lost (#12, 1974), Love Stinks (#38, 1980), Come Back (#32, 1980) and Freeze-Frame (#4, 1981). Their biggest hit, however, was Centerfold which reached #1 in the USA and #3 in the UK.

That music video is cheesy as fuck. RIP

OK, let's put this one to rest.
Emma is the last person on earth who will have some dude chisling ' Born 18--' in her headstone.  Fair enough?

    SC

(Edit -- and frankly I don't know what everyone are all on about.  No one ever ever ever EVVVV-VER ever ever said Emma was 'the last person born in the 19th Century' [prove me wrong with a link here ________________], only that she was the last person born in the 1800's.  And that's a fact, jack.

Not necessarily as headstones can be put up long after a person has died!

But yeah, she was the last person who was born before 1900, without dispute. There are two still left born in 1900 who are really the last remaining people born in the nineteenth century - since there wasn't a year zero, centuries start in the years ending 01.

  14. I was very stupid for forgetting about the Ramones as an obvious example of a group whose members are all dead.

I was also very successful in diverting this thread away from its original topic.

  15. He doesn't look great does he?

With Ginger Baker also ill and Jack Bruce already gone in the not too distant future there may be no living members of Cream left.

How many other groups have all the former members dead? Jimi Hendrix Experience was one of the first groups to clear, back in 2008 with the death of Mitch Mitchell. ELP almost did it last year if not for that plucky Palmer (who by the way, I'd put money on being alive in 2030).
