Franz Schubert died on this day 195 years ago, aged 31. - Schubert's father started giving him violin lessons when he was 8, and further musical training from his local church's choirmaster (specifically the piano). He was recognized by and then mentored by Antonio Salieri. - Schubert was a teenage prodigy, writing over 150 songs- or "lieder"- in 1815 alone, when he was 18. - Schubert would become a major celebrity during his lifetime, and parties (usually held at the home of one of his friends or sponsors) where he would perform got their own name- "Schubertiades". - Of his over 600 lieder, his signature song was 1825's "Ellens dritter Gesang" ("Ellen's Third Song")- better known by its opening lyric, "Ave Maria": - Schubert would perform at a public concert only once- March 26, 1828, the first death anniversary of Ludwig von Beethoven (one of Schubert's prime influences,- Schubert was a torchbearer at his funeral). - Schubert's premature death has been contested. He was said to have died of typhoid fever, but other theories include longtime exposure to mercury (his health had been declining throughout the 1820s), syphilis, or salmonella.

Henry A. Wallace died on this day 58 years ago, aged 77. - Wallace was the son of Harry Wallace, who served as the US Secretary of Agriculture during the Harding and Coolidge administrations. The senior Wallace was a professor of George Washington Carver during his time at the Iowa State Agricultural College, and Carver would pique the junior Wallace's interest in botany and plant breeding. - Wallace would then invent a breed of hybrid corn called the Copper Cross, and founded his own company (Hi-Bred Corn) in 1926 to produce it on a mass scale. - FDR would appoint Wallace as his Secretary of Agriculture for his first two terms, and would pick him as his running mate in the 1940 election. As VP, he would establish the War Production Board, and toured Latin America (managing to get some countries to declare war on Nazi Germany). - Wallace would be dropped from the 1944 ticket in favor of Harry S. Truman, due to his anti-segregation stances and pro-Soviet statements (made during WWII). Roosevelt would then reappoint him as Secretary of Commerce, and he would serve in this position until being fired by Truman for urging reconciliation with the Soviet Union. - Wallace ran on the Progressive Party ticket in 1948, coming in 4th place in the popular vote with 1.15 million votes (about 200,000 behind Strom Thurmond). - Wallace was diagnosed with ALS in 1964, dying after a year-long battle with the disease.

Thomas Pelham Holles- or Lord Newcastle- died on this day 255 years ago, aged 75. - Newcastle was the first of his family to use a double surname- his father was (Baron) Thomas Pelham, and his mother was Grace Holles. - A partisan Whig, Newcastle would organize street fights with Jacobite opponents following the death of Queen Anne. His support of King George I earned him the title of the Earl (later Marquess) of Clare. - Newcastle entered Parliament sometime in the late 1710s. He served as Secretary of State from 1724 to 1748- during this time, he oversaw domestic and foreign conflicts such as the War of Jenkins' Ear, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the 1745 Jacobite uprising. - Newcastle became Prime Minister upon the death of Henry Pelham (his younger brother) in 1754. The Seven Years' War began during his premiership, and he would be ousted as PM in 1756 due to poor foreign policy decisions. Regardless, he returned to the role in 1757, and would be dismissed again in 1762 by King George III (having preferred Lord Bute). Newcastle was the last Prime Minister to be removed by a monarch (before said power was allocated to the legislative branch). - Because of his ineptitude, Newcastle was often lampooned by 18th-century satirists: (This 1761 political cartoon depicts Newcastle (on the right) as a knave- the fox on the left is Baron Holland (a pun on his real name, Henry Fox).) - Newcastle would retire from politics in 1765. He suffered a stroke in December of 1767 (prime material for deadpoolers from 1768), dying eleven months later.

King Fulk of Jerusalem died on this day 880 years ago, aged 54. - Fulk was French, and was the son of count Fulk IV of Anjou. He succeeded his father in the position upon his death in 1109, as Fulk V. - Fulk would go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1119, and would help fund the recently-founded Knights Templar. He was not well-liked by other crusader states' rulers (thinking he would invade them) and the general populace (who were more loyal to Melisende). Fulk would only acquiesce power to Melisende after an assassination attempt on him in 1134. - Fulk would die after a 12-year reign while hunting- his horse fell and he was struck in his head by its saddle. Melisende outlived him, but their son Baldwin III would reign with her. - Fulk was the paternal grandfather of king Henry II of England.
