Judah Loew ben Bezalel died on this day 414 years ago, aged ~89. - Loew is sometimes referred to as the "Maharal"- this is an acronym of Moreinu ha-Rav Loew ("Our Teacher, Rabbi Loew"). - Loew became the regional rabbi of Moravia in 1553; a position he held for the next 20 years. The local cardinal saw the taxes he and his congregation paid as necessary to fund the Holy Roman Empire's involvement in the Thirty Years' War. - In 1588, Loew moved back to his home city of Prague, and would preach to Emperor Rudolf II in 1592; Rudolf was fascinated by kabbalah- Jewish understanding of the relationship between God and the universe. - Loew's beliefs included that nature is uniform and randomness would indicate a lack of God's omnipotence, and the support of scientific study should it not contradict the Torah or Bible. - Also in 1592, Loew was elected as the chief rabbi of Poland. He retired shortly before his death, returning to Prague. - Loew is best known for a legend regarding his creation of a golem to protect the Prague ghetto from antisemitic attacks- allegedly, he built it out of clay from the riverbanks of the Vltava River and named it Josef. A recent rumor purports that during World War II, a Nazi agent went up to the Prague synagogue's attack and died under mysterious circumstances immediately after- that attack is allegedly where the golem still remains. The legend has been adapted into film, most notably in the 1920 movie The Golem: How He Came into the World (the earliest film to hold a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes):

Tomas de Torquemada died on this day 525 years ago, aged 77. - A friar of the Dominican order from a young age, Torquemada would become the religious advisor to King Ferdinand II and Isabella I of Spain in the 1470s. - Fearful of the increasing influence of Spanish Jews and Muslims, Torquemada successfully lobbied the monarchs to get Pope Sixtus IV to allow the establishment of a Holy Office for the Propagation of the Faith in 1478, thus beginning... - Torquemada would become the Grand Inquisitor of Spain in 1483, a position he would hold for the last 15 years of his life. As Grand Inquisitor, Torquemada would establish over 20 tribunal offices in the country. - Torquemada was known for his cruel punishments towards those accused of not being Catholic in order to get their confessions (even if they were Christians)- these included waterboarding and burning people alive. Torquemada was personally responsible for the deaths of around 2,000 people, and complaints were sent to the pope from other inquisitors criticizing his ruthlessness. - By 1494, Torquemada was in failing health, which led Pope Alexander VI to send people to help him run the Spanish Inquisition. He would soon retire to a monastery, where he would be interred; his bones were reportedly stolen in 1832.

Abraham Clark died on this day 229 years ago, aged 68. - Originally a farmer, Clark entered New Jersey politics, becoming the high sheriff of Essex County in 1775. - In 1776, Clark became one of the state's delegates to the Continental Congress, and signed the Declaration of Independence: (his signature is at the bottom of this snippet) - Clark would be an on-and-off member of the Continental Congress from that time until 1788. - While attending the Annapolis Convention in 1786, Clark formally made the motion for a congress to draft the United States Constitution (James Madison recalled this in an 1804 letter). - From 1778 to 1791, Clark was a member of the New Jersey Legislative Council- the predecessor to the state's Senate. - In 1790, Clark would be elected to the US House of Representatives, and remained a congressman until his death (reportedly from heatstroke).

Perez Prado died on this day 34 years ago, aged 72. - Born in Cuba, Prado moved to Mexico in 1949, forming his own band. He would adapt Cuban danzón music into more upbeat mambo music- he would often incorporate him shouting "Dilo" ("Say it") into his songs. - Shortly after his emigration, he composed one of his most famous works... ladies and gentlemen, this is "Mambo No. 5": - Mambo would soon become a worldwide musical trend, and Prado had a number-one in the US and UK in 1955 with his rendition of "Cherry Pink (and Apple Blossom White)": (#1 in the UK for two weeks, but ten weeks in the US (and was 1955's best-selling single)) - Prado was also known for his 1958 song "Patricia"- this was the final song to top Billboard's "Most Played By Jockeys" chart before it was scrapped in favor of the Hot 100 chart. - Prado was deported from Mexico in 1953- a rumor has persisted claiming it was because he made a mambo version of Mexico's national anthem, but in actuality someone reported him for not having a work permit. He would be able to return to Mexico in 1964, where he resided until his death.

Emperor Titus died on this day 1942 years ago, aged 41. - The son of Emperor Vespasian, Titus would serve as a military commander in the First Jewish-Roman War. When his father became emperor in 69, Titus was put in charge of the Roman army, and would capture Jerusalem the following year- notably destroying the Second Temple in the process. - Titus would become emperor in 79. Mere months into his reign, Mount Vesuvius would erupt and bury Pompeii and Herculaneum; he would organize and fund the relief effort for the citizens of the destroyed cities. A fire would also break out in Rome in 80, which destroyed the third incarnation of the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus. - Also in 80, the Colosseum would finish construction- it still stands mostly intact to this day, attracting millions of visitors to Rome every year: Titus would order the construction of a new public bathhouse to open alongside the stadium. The dedication of these two buildings are Titus' final recorded act as emperor. - Titus reportedly died of a fever, although there are some other theories. One suggests his brother poisoned him by putting a sea slug in his meal, while rabbinic sources claim that a fly flew up his nose and picked at his brain for several years (definitely false considering the lifespan of insects). - Titus would be succeeded as emperor by his brother Domitian, who deified him as his first imperial act.
