Roger Ebert died on this day 10 years ago, aged 70. - Ebert's first review was for the 1966 Georges Lautner film Galia, which he gave two-and-a-half stars (out of four). Over his 46 years in film criticism, he reviewed over 7,000 movies. - Ebert was primarily known for his scathing reviews- particularly those for Caligula, North, and Mad Dog Time. Conversely, his favorites included Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain, and Goodfellas. - Ebert first teamed up with Gene Siskel in 1975 for a Chicago public broadcast station, and their show was called Sneak Previews. This would soon be picked up by PBS, which they left in 1982 to make the show At the Movies. Following Siskel's death in 1999, Ebert would partner with rotating co-hosts that included Martin Scorsese (Ebert was the first critic to review Scorsese's first film Who's That Knocking at My Door). - Ebert would also venture into filmmaking himself, writing the screenplay for 1970's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls- this was given 0 stars by Gene Siskel, but has since gained a cult following. Ebert was also involved with the production of the cancelled Sex Pistols film Who Killed Bambi? - Ebert was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2002, having it removed that same year. He was then diagnosed with salivary gland cancer in 2003, went into remission, and was re-diagnosed with it in 2006. He nearly died from surgery, which left him unable to speak (yet did not appear on DeathList 2007). These surgeries continued through 2008, and by 2011, his face was damaged to the point where he needed a prosthetic chin: Ebert was hospitalized in December of 2012 following a hip fracture, and died four months later before he would be released into hospice care (definitely a list miss).

Michael Havers died on this day 31 years ago, aged 69. - Havers was the son of Sir Cecil Havers- both were judges. The junior Havers became a member of the bar in 1948. - Havers would later be elected to Parliament in 1970, serving until 1987; he then became a life peer. - Havers' house was bombed by the IRA in 1981 while he and his family were in Spain. - Havers oversaw the trial of (future fellow DeathList hit) Peter Sutcliffe in 1981, and drew controversy when he said something that was interpreted as condoning the murder of prostitutes: "[...]the saddest part of the case is that some were not. The last six attacks were on totally respectable women". - Havers' son is the actor Nigel Havers, known for his roles as Lewis Archer on Coronation Street and Andrew Lindsay in Chariots of Fire. - Havers suffered from heart disease throughout his final years; he debuted on DeathList 1991 and was the second hit of 1992.

Selena [Quintanilla] died on this day 28 years ago, aged 23. - The obstetrician who delivered Selena was none other than future libertarian politician Ron Paul. - Selena first began singing professionally at the age of 10 as a member of Selena y Los Dinos ("Selena and the Guys"), which was formed by her father Abraham. - Selena would begin to find mainstream success after signing with EMI Records in 1989. In 1991, her song "Buenos Amigos" was her first to top the Billboard Latin chart. Two years later, she won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album for her live album, and was nominated for another in 1995 for Amor Prohibido. - Selena was killed by the manager of her fan club and boutique business, Yolanda Saldivar, after she confronted Saldivar for embezzlement. Her posthumously-released album Dreaming of You topped the Billboard Hot 200, with the titular track becoming her most-successful song (#22 on the Hot 100 chart): - Shortly after her death, Howard Stern mocked her on his show, stating that Alvin and the Chipmunks "had more soul" than her music, and would later play some of her song with gunshot sound effects in the background. A warrant for his arrest would later be made (for disorderly conduct), leading to him making an on-air apology. - A biopic was made of her in 1997, which helped launch Jennifer Lopez's mainstream career.

King Gustav III of Sweden died on this day 231 years ago, aged 46. - Gustav became king in 1771following the death of his father Adolf Frederick. Shortly into his reign, he initiated a coup against the Swedish parliament in order to force the country to become an absolute monarchy (after decades of parliamentary rule). - Despite his absolutist causes, Gustav was quite liberal: he abolished torture in order to get confessions from a criminal, gave religious tolerance to Catholics and Jews, and abolished several grain export tolls. - While Sweden did not participate in the American Revolution, Gustav personally sided with the Patriots: "It is such an interesting drama to see a nation create itself[...] This perhaps is America's century[...] I cannot help but admire their courage and enthusiastically appreciate their daring". - In 1788, Gustav declared war on Russia (while they were fighting the Ottoman Empire) in an attempt to garner support. This war largely resulted in nothing changing except that the two countries agreed to a defense pact. - Gustav had planned to sponsor a colonial endeavor into southwest Australia, but had to cancel it after declaring war on Russia. - Following the war, Gustav's popularity plummeted, and he was shot while attending a ball at the Royal Opera House. He died two weeks later after the wound got infected.
