Louis Armstrong, one of the greatest musicians in jazz history who recorded hit songs for five decades, passed away in his sleep at his home in the Corona section of Queens, New York on this date in 1971. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He was 69 years old. Eleven of his recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Armstrong was buried in Flushing Cemetery in Queens, New York, just a few miles away from his home in Corona. His grave is simple, engraved with nothing more than his name, Louis Armstrong and the nickname "Satchmo" in quotes. Louis Armstrong was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

Max Klinger, German engraver, creative symbolist painter and prolific sculptor, died in Naumburg, Burgenlandkreis, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany on this date in 1920. He was 63 years old. An admirer of the etchings of Menzel and Goya. His work had a deep influence on Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst or Edvard Munch. Symbolist prints and paintings by Max Klinger can be seen in the best art museums around the world. For his efforts, Klinger received a number of awards and honours. He was made a Knight of the Pour le Merite order, elected a full member of the Munich Academy and an honorary member of the Stockholm Academy. Max Klinger was buried in the garden of his home.

Barry White, long-time soul singer who made himself an attraction in the 70's with his romantic songs who suffered from hypertension and chronic high blood pressure, was hospitalized for kidney failure. White was undergoing dialysis treatment, but the combination of illnesses proved too much and he died at a West Hollywood hospital on this date in 2003. He was 58 years old. During the course of his long career in the music business, White earned an astounding 106 gold albums, 41 of which also attained platinum status, 20 gold platinum singles and 10 platinum singles, his musical talent had earned him more than one hundred million dollars in worldwide record sales. Barry White's body was cremated and his ashes were scattered.

Andy Griffith, one of the most beloved actors in American television, died in Roanoke Island after having a heart attack on this date in 2012. He was 86 years old. His long-running TV comedy series "The Andy Griffith Show" established him as a television icon. He is also very known for his portrayal of a defense attorney in the dramatic series "Matlock". Born on the same date as Marilyn Monroe. Griffith had battled other health issues for years, including coronary artery disease, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Andy Griffith's burial took place less than five hours after his death, in the Griffith family cemetery at his coastal home on Manteo, Roanoke Island, in Dare County, North Carolina.

Ernest Hemingway, American novelist, short-story writer and journalist shot himself in the head with a double-barreled shotgun on this date in 1961. He was 61 years old. Hemingway's grandfather, father, brother, sister and granddaughter all killed themselves. Many of his literary works are considered classics of American literature. Hemingway was renowned for novels like "The Sun Also Rises" (1926), "A Farewell to Arms" (1929), "To Have and Have Not" (1937), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940) or "The Old Man and the Sea" (1952). He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in 1954. Ernest Hemingway was buried in Idaho. You can find his final resting place in the Ketchum Cemetery.

Walter Matthau, American actor who was known for his deep voice and razor-sharp comic timing, died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on this date in 2000. He was 79 years old. Best remembered by the public for his many roles opposite Jack Lemmon. Walter Matthau won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for "The Fortune Cookie" (1966). On Broadway, Matthau received two Tony Awards for Best Actor for "A Shot in the Dark" and "The Odd Couple". He also won a Golden Globe Award and two British Academy Film Awards. Walter Matthau was interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Westwood, California not far from his longtime friend Jack Lemmon who died less than one year later.

Lillian Hellman, American playwright, wrote a series of powerful, realistic plays that made her one of America's major dramatists, and motion-picture screenwriter, died of cardiac arrest in a hospital near her summer home on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts in the United States in North America on this date in 1984. She was 79 years old. Some of her best known plays were "The Children's Hour", "The Little Foxes" and "Toys in the Attic". Among the many honors she received were a Gold Medal from the Academy of Arts and Letters and two New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. Lillian Hellman was buried under a large pine tree on a gentle rise at one end of the Abel's Hill Cemetery in Chilmark, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

Lana Turner, one of the most famous American actresses in Hollywood in the 40's and 50's, died in Century City, Los Angeles, California of natural causes after years of treatment for throat cancer on this date in 1995. She was 74 years old. Some of her best known films were "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941), "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1941), "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1946), "Green Dolphin Street" (1947), "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), "Peyton Place" (1957) and "Imitation of Life" (1959). One of MGM's biggest stars. Her private life, however, was marred by a series of failed marriages and scandals. She was married eight times and never for more than five years. Actor Lex Barker was Turner's fourth husband. Cheryl, Lana's daughter, was sexually abused by Barker when she was 10. Her boyfriend, mobster Johnny Stompanato, was stabbed to death by her daughter Cheryl, during one of their many violent arguments. Cheryl was acquitted with the court ruling it was justifiable homicide. Lana Turner's body was cremated.

José Iturbi, celebrated, explosive and temperamental Spanish-born conductor, harpsichordist and pianist; one of the most important pianists in the first half of the 20th century, died in Los Angeles, California, five days after being admitted to Cedars-Sinai Hospital for heart problems on this date in 1980. He was 84 years old. Iturbi made his American debut in New York in 1929. During the 30's, he was conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in New York. Iturbi also suffered much tragedy in his personal life. His wife, María Giner de los Santos, died after taking poison, apparently mistakenly, for cough medicine and their only daughter, María, subsequently committed suicide in Beverly Hills. He was involved in a complex family custody battle in the 40's that culminated in his former son-in-law kidnapping Iturbi's two granddaughters. José Iturbi was interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.

Nora Ephron, American author, film director, journalist, novelist, producer and screenwriter, died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital of complications from leukemia on this date in 2012. She was 71 years old. Ephron was nominated three times for the Oscar for Best Screenplay. She won a BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay for "When Harry Met Sally..." (1989). In the 90's Ephron turned to film directing with such works as "This Is My Life" (1992), "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993), "Michael" (1996) or "You've Got Mail" (1998). She pre-planned her entire memorial service, which took place in New York; and selected the list of speakers and even assigned how much time they'd each have to talk. Nora Ephron's body was cremated and her ashes were scattered.

George Armstrong Custer, Union Army Brigadier General, who distinguished himself, and cavalry commander in the American Indian Wars during the American Civil War, died, while leading the 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana Territory, by two bullet wounds, one near his heart and one in the head on this date in 1876. He was 36 years old. Custer is remembered as one of the most controversial and famous figures in the United States military history. His body was found near Custer Hill, also known as Last Stand Hill, alongside the bodies of 40 of his men. George Armstrong Custer was originally buried in a shallow grave on the battle field, and a year later, he was interred at West Point Cemetery.
