And now I see these posts! I'd posted of Bass' death in the 'Cartoonists and Animators' thread. Edit - correction and acknowledgement

    Cartoonists And Animators

Jules Bass, 87 known for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and the Last Unicorn has died. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/jules-bass-dead-frosty-the-snowman-1235248424/ Well known for his partnership with the late Arthur Rankin Jr. that was Rankin/Bass Productions. Also a DDP pick, a hit pending a QO.

    Jerry Lee Lewis

That Instagram photo is quite telling! The blue "suitcase" in the lower left hand side is a Philips oxygen concentrator - so he's clearly on supplimental oxygen. If this is related to his flu or he is on it long term is up for debate. https://www.philips.co.uk/healthcare/product/HC0044100/everflo-q-home-oxygen-concentrator If only the resolution on the photo was better, then it could be determined what the bottles on the bedside table are for. Most likely they are for this bout of the flu.

    Ideas and possibilities for 2023

This was a bit of a surprise. As @arghton said 22 November 1955 can be widely found (making him 66 now; the DDP gives that as his dob too), but on a quick search, I can't find the source of the date or confirm it. As the Committee had a hit with one BBC presenter in Turnbull, Alagiah is an obvious choice to follow up with.

    Angela Lansbury

May I suggest the following headlines? 'Angel-a she is' or 'Under Lands Buried'?

    Derby Dead Pool 2022

If there was a D40 hit to occur, a quick glance shows that Angela Lansbury was probably the best option. Not until =50th place is she picked by the team 'Tiny and Ellie's Pick of the Drops' on 75 points. So no threat...

    Linda Ronstadt

TL;DR - if she has a fall or shows significant cognitive decline - yes for 2023

As mentioned in the "Hollywood Possibilities" thread, Henry Silva has died at 95. QO courtesy of the Daily Mail: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-11221843/Oceans-Eleven-actor-Henry-Silva-dies-age-95.html Edit: Re-reading @gcreptile in the above thread gives a Metro QO; my mistake, didn't realize it is a QO source - it isn't listed on the DDP website on the DDP Rules page

    Statistics

This seems like the best place to post this. If not, the mods are free to move it where they see fit. There does not seem to be an agreed definition of “bedblocker”. Sure, the perennial pick and dead pooling kryptonite. But a quick search of the forum links it to names such as Leslie Phillips, Shane MacGowan, Dick van Dyke, Emperor Akihito and past claimants to the moniker Betty White, Rev Billy Graham and Bob Dole. Notable contenders that have fallen recently are below: As I see it, a “bedblocker” is a pick that has been picked 4 or more times and has appeared frequently in recent lists. Let me explain the reasoning. In looking at the 2022 list, there are clear bedblockers in Kissinger, DvD, Jimmy Carter, Barker, Phillips and Scales. And there are those who feel like one due to consecutive years of appearance, such as Lansbury, and notably both Greenspan and MacGowan. Here’s the list as on the official front page: Here’s the list sorted by number of appearances: Around 4 appearances feels like the start of bedblocker status to me. Especially with appearances year on year. Looking at those with three appearances such as Le Pen, Delors and Crosby, it feels like they are set to continue on future lists. I forget that someone like Gall is on the list, as their appearances are less regular. Notable examples of past picks not on this year’s list that feel like a bedblocker versus forgotten: Pope Benedict XVI (2017, 2018, 2021) - a likely returnee, but for a while, he felt like the furniture. Louis Farrakhan (2000, 2007, 2018) - yeah, when did you last think of him? As far as I can tell, 2018 was his last notable appearance on both the list and for a trip to Iran (!!). Both of these are below the (arbitrary) threshold of 4 appearances, but feel like much different picks to me. Is it the 'familiarity breeds contempt' of (near) constant appearances? Thoughts?

A question for the Committee: How long at the end of the competion is the grace period for QOs to appear? I ask as I noticed hit 178, Ian Oliver died on 7 July, but only recieved a QO today 8 August: https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2022/celebs_O.html#oliveri018 Clearly he counts now, but with a delay of a month, if he had died 7 December 2022 and recieved a QO on 8 January 2023, what would be the status of the hit? Edit: nice find @YoungWillz

As noted, David Trimble, 1998 Peace Nobel Laureate has died. He can also claim the accolade of 'List of the Missed': https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2019/celebs_T.html#trimbd Naturally he's garnered the QO from the BBC - why did I make him the only sub for the 'Nobel Notables' theme??

    5. Pope Francis

On track to visit Canada this Sunday: https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/pope-canada-visit-comments-1.6523304 Refers to the trip as 'a "pilgrimage of penance" that he hopes can help heal the wrongs done to Indigenous people by Roman Catholic priests and nuns who ran abusive residential schools'. Also repeats the statement from the Reuters interview quoted above on his health issues (he had suffered "a small fracture" in the knee when he took a misstep while a ligament was inflamed).

@msc and @YoungWillz Had a chance to read the Gurnard this weekend on Saturday, and the print edition has a QO for Ann Davies written by none other than Toby Hadoke. However, it also appeared online on 10 May. Worth the read, even if old news. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/may/10/ann-davies-obituary

It is these kind of hits that make the difference - while Jean-Louis Trintignant (J-LT) is D40, only 46 teams have him. Of those, only 7 have him in the top 40 ranking. For those interested prior to the update, this is how J-LT shakes up the standings. If I had a number in mind to keep a comfortable lead, that would be ~20 points.

The Cardinals Of The Roman Catholic Church

As posted in the Pope Francis thread, a consistory to create 21 new cardinals scheduled for Aug. 27. Sixteen of those cardinals are under age 80 and eligible to vote in a conclave to elect Francis’ successor. 5. Pope Francis

The AP article below covers a lot of topics discussed: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/us/pope-francis-fuels-new-speculation-on-future-of-pontificate/ar-AAY6aNH?bk=1&ocid=msedgntp&cvid=351cc5ac983e46a08245a2b436759d88 Speculation on his pontificate due to visiting the central Italian city of L'Aquila in August for a feast initiated by Pope Celestine V, one of the few pontiffs who resigned before Pope Benedict XVI stepped down in 2013 His increased mobility problems that have forced him to use a wheelchair for the last month (see @roaming_comrade post above) Last week when Francis announced a consistory to create 21 new cardinals scheduled for Aug. 27. Sixteen of those cardinals are under age 80 and eligible to vote in a conclave to elect Francis’ successor (Note the number of cardinals to be created here is on par with Francis' past consistories) Commentary that it would be unlikely for Francis to resign while Benedict is still alive; quote “He’s not going to have two former popes floating around,” with the only insight on Benedict being '95-year-old retired pope is physically frail but still alert and receiving occasional visitors in his home in the Vatican gardens'

    The 100 Club

I share your disbelief on this too. While he's not a pick of mine in the DDP, he was on my shortlist. I've not seen any QO, but have seen French, Italian, Slovenian and even Indian (Hindustan Times) obits for him. Too many ways he's notable - age, Holocaust survivor, writer - yet nothing. Maybe something will appear eventually?

The Cardinals Of The Roman Catholic Church

Given Pope Francis' recent use of a wheelchair, potential health issue(s) and it is the end of the Easter season, it seems that 2022 is overdue for consistory. At the time of writing, there are 209 cardinals, of which 117 are cardinal electors. This is below the maximum threshold of 120 that can participate at the papal conclave. Francis has exceeded that threshold every consistory, yet if often falls below 120 within months. Francis has held consistories as follows: 22 February 2014 - 19 cardinals, 122 electors 14 February 2015 - 20 cardinals, 125 electors 19 November 2016 - 17 cardinals, 121 electors 28 June 2017 - 5 cardinals, 121 electors 28 June 2018 - 14 cardinals, 125 electors 5 October 2019 - 13 cardinals, 128 electors 28 November 2020 - 13 cardinals, 128 electors The time periods between consistories has been 12, 21, 7, 12, 16, and 13 months; currently going on 18 months since the November 2020 consistory. So certainly possible. It is also worth noting that the next cardinal to turn 80 is Norberto Rivera Carrera on 6 June, created cardinal by John Paul II. On 3 September the next cardinal to turn 80 is a Francis creation. From 22 September 2022 to 17 September 2023, a total of 11 cardinals will turn 80, 9 created by Benedict XVI and 2 by John Paul II. The next Francis creation after this to turn 80 is on 1 October 2023. If Francis is looking to his influence in the College of Cardinals and keeping his current state of health in mind, appointments between now and September make sense to cement his percentage of the demographics, especially for the electors.

I had wondered this and it was made clear with the update on Wednesday that Judd would get the unnatural bonus. So far in 2022: ISIS leader - drone strike Anna Karen - house fire Naomi Judd - suicide And in 2021 GUN's avalanche of mountaineers. What does count as the "unnatural bonus"?
