Team in. I used my provisional 2023 shadow list, but moved three picks I'd especially like to see on the list into the Top 3.

While he's been "dying" at a slow pace before, now he needs oxygen nearly all the time and says that he's "close to death" and "feels how the thread he's hanging on by is getting thinner". Looks death warmed up but he said that he'll die soon last year and the year before that.
He's not really famous anywhere as far as I know, I'd say he's FFBI as he's more known for suffering from a terminal illness but his death will be mentioned in those tabloids.
Jorma Kalevi dead at 76.

Had a DL-related dream last night. DeathList 2023 was out: Pope Benedict XVI was back and was no. 6 on the list, Michael Gambon stayed on and was on the Top 10, and for some reason, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was back on the list.

Mutual hits for official DL, Crowdsourced DL, and Drop 40 by year:

2017 – Joost van der Westhuizen, Ian Brady, Peter Sallis, Errol Christie, Glen Campbell, Bruce Forsyth, Tony Booth, Gord Downie, King Michael of Romania
2018 – Billy Graham, Tessa Jowell, John McCain, Denis Norden, Stan Lee, George Bush Senior
2019 – Doris Day, John McCririck, Johnny Clegg, Robert Mugabe, Leah Bracknell, Clive James
2020 – Terry Jones, Kirk Douglas, Genesis P-Orridge, Stirling Moss, Vera Lynn, Olivia de Havilland, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Nobby Stiles, Alex Trebek
2021 – Leon Spinks, Rush Limbaugh, Prince Philip, Jimmy Greaves, Bob Dole, Betty White
2022 – June Brown, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Turnbull, Queen Elizabeth II, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Lee Lewis, Leslie Phillips, Pelé
2023 – Ryuichi Sakamoto, Harry Belafonte, Rolf Harris, Tony Bennett, Bob Barker, Bobby Charlton, Henry Kissinger
2024 – Glynis Johns, Franz Beckenbauer, Bob Newhart
Sidenote: I noticed hits shared by official DL and Drop 40 but not Crowdsourced DL are quite rare. There have been only six such hits: Mary Tyler Moore and Jerry Lewis in 2017, Stephen Hawking in 2018, Valerie Harper in 2019, Shane MacGowan in 2023 and Derek Draper in 2024. As of 2024, the only living names who are currently shared by both official DL and Drop 40 but not Crowdsourced DL are Clint Eastwood, Willie Nelson, Prunella Scales and Buzz Aldrin.

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but isn't Katherine Jackson quite fringey name? I've seen her being suggested to the list quite often, how does she differ from the likes of Bill Gates Sr and Roberta McCain?

1 hour ago, Sean said:Ackland, Morris , Hurd and MacGowan I can all see getting dropped.
Agreed on the first three. Ackland seems like one of the more likely drops. He retired from acting several years ago, but at the same time he doesn't have any known illnesses and he is ranked fairly low on this years list. He is by no means a bad pick, though.
Morris is 50/50, can see him staying, can see him being dropped. Still relatively active though, which suggests he is one of the weaker picks this year, and I would personally drop him (watch the oldest debutant curse strike again now...).
I reckon either Tebbit or Hurd (probably Hurd) will get booted from this list if it finishes low, though both would be very risky drops.
I'm not sure on MacGowan though, it feels like they've setting him up to be another bedblocker. Past self-destructive/alcoholic picks have usually been on once or twice and then dropped entirely, but MacGowan has stayed on year after year.

As healthy as the likes of Van Dyke, Brooks and Attenborough are, I really doubt any of them are going to be dropped next year, as 96+ names rarely get dropped. I believe the last time was in 2013, when Herman Wouk was dropped.
Glancing the list, there aren't actually too many names that seem like easy drops for next year. Crosby, Gambon and Berlusconi are probably certs to be dropped. Cheney seems like another one that would be an easy drop, but I can easily see them keeping him on next year anyway.

I reckon the list will get 13 hits. I predict Lansbury, one of the ailing sports names (Starmer-Smith, Charlton, Law, Pelé) and two other nonagenarians will go.
