Quiz Time
Master Obit replied to harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
I don't drive and don't wear hair straighteners so a number of these don't apply to me so I can't get an accurate result. Optimally, risk quizzes should include scenarios that everyone can encounter. Also, who checks their bank balance before every purchase? Everyone should know their rough bank balance at any point so either you know you comfortably have enough, or you know you probably don't have enough. -

I can actually name all of them, rather shamefully. -
The Mohs scale of hardness should probably have an 11 added for "mymango when he sees a picture of Jimmy Carter".

It seems like we've got a few interested people here, and on the back of discussion in the King Charles thread I have started this one for people to specifically discuss this hobby. It would be interesting to know if we've any ardent collectors here, maybe @Cerberus? I've been collecting the vast majority of my life, so it'd be nice to be able to share some of this passion with some people on here. Post here anything related to this hobby - whether you're someone who devotes vast amounts of time and energy to building a magnificent collection, or you just like looking for interesting designs amongst your pocket change.

My own perspective at this point is that it could absolutely have been better (Irwin, Field, Doherty were all misses imo), but at this point it is utterly ridiculous just how long some of these have kept going. I didn't necessarily think it was an especially great list when it was revealed but 4 hits by October is some incredibly bad luck.

In line with his own beliefs, I am questioning what I read on the internet. I don't believe he has ever got married or had sex.

Do you have to make a public declaration of your arousal every time someone mentions this name?

Yeah good stuff. The true king of immortality.

She'd fit right in on deathlist then.

I sure hope all the people here getting erect at the thought of him reaching 100 don't get so excited they have strokes on the day.

Deathlist Dreaming
Master Obit replied to harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
I did dream last night that we got two hits in one day and finally ended the drought. Of course, Jimmy Carter was not one of them. -
The four crowns are all very common. the farthing isn't rare either unfortunately but still very cool to imagine its 277 years of life. The 1911 piece looks like something from an item of jewellery.

What a horrible badge. Looks like a year 7 designed it for their DT homework. The date has the daft American format of month first, and no space after the comma. Whoever designed it needs to be put on death row.
-
Yeah I was heartbroken when our great Queen Elizabeth died. Sobbed for days. I suppose we just don't have the same connection to Jimmy Carter.

I don't understand the notion of "x is really famous and old, they should be on the list even if they are healthy" This is how people end up as bedblockers. If an A-lister is omitted because they're seemingly healthy and then dies in the year, I wouldn't consider it a miss. If the committee wants to hit higher numbers then they need to consider more than just age. Fwiw, I'm not in favour of Starmer-Smith being on either. A, B and even C-listers I'm fine with, but he's so obscure that even my friend who is regarded as one of the most elite sports quizzers in Britain hadn't heard of him. I also agree that there are far less frail people on the list, but for me that doesn't justify an apparently healthy 90 year old being on (assuming she is healthy, I've not really looked and am taking your word) even if they are extremely famous.
-
"She looks healthy" So remind me why she ought to be on? Should we just have every healthy A-lister on the list?
-
At 110+, you'd be among the world's oldest men.
-
Could it not just be that they're tough old bastards with access to the best healthcare, and also that there are many people on the list who aren't really in terrible health but are just old? Prince Philip looked like a zombie for about a decade before his death. He looked like he'd die if he sneezed too vigorously but he had constant access to the highest standard of healthcare which kept him going. He'd never have made 99 if he was an average Brit.
-
A lot of people seem to have this goal. It rather reminds me of a scene from Open All Hours Granville: You won't live forever, you know. Arkwright: Well I'm going to give it a damn good try, aren't you?
-
Or people who were 18 and signed up later on in the war. They'd be among the world's oldest, but it's possible and we are talking about the very last ones.
-
I think I'd be afraid to actually sign up for it, but at the same time I don't want to rumble on in to my nineties and hundreds if I've no reasonable quality of life and need 36 tablets a day just to keep my battery at 1% instead of 0%. We all die at some point and I'd rather die in control than waste away.

Antony Ernest Brown died 22/03/2021 in Dorset Paul Williamson there is no death registered on GRO 1984 to date, so either alive or moved outside England/Wales, ditto with Jeffrey Wallace Gardiner. I can't even find a birth record for Tommy Mann, so guessing that his real name was different.
-
Barbara Barker (née Ashcroft) does appear to still be alive. Her husband's date of death is wrong though (Ken Barker died 20/06/1998, not 24/06/1998)

*Grumbles vigorously* For the record, the ESO are terrific. I just wanted to be the one to announce this on here.
-
Who piggybacked on my discovery. They got that information as a result of me. @Ulitzer95 will testify that I informed him of this privately way before the ESO updated this, I was just waiting for OiB to recognise it before I mentioned the death.
