Thomas Jefferson died first but John Adams was not aware of the latter’s death when himself died. His last words were « Thomas Jefferson survives » ! Adams died at 90 years and 8 months and was the longest lived (and the only nonagenarian) US president until Ronald Reagan surpassed him in 2001, and then Gerald Ford in 2004 and George HW Bush and Jimmy Carter in 2015. Herbert Hoover also became nonagerian but he died at « only » 90 years and 1 month in 1964.

Most importantly, he was 6 times French Champion ! In 67, 68, 69, 70, 74 and 75. This was the (joint) record for a player until 2008.

There was a Russian football player named Vladimir But. And but is French for goal ! However he only scored 27 goals in 18 years. He notably played for Dortmund.

1978 players whose deaths were unnoticed on this forum (on this topic or in Time Added) : Mexican Carlos Gomez Casillas died on 16 December 2017 aged 65. He only played Mexico’s third and last match against Poland. German Rolf Russman died on 2 October 2019 aged 58. He played the whole 6 games of West Germany as they were eliminated in the second group stage. Austrian Eduard ‘Edi’ Krieger died on 20 December 2019 aged 73. He played 5 of Austria’s 6 games, as they were knocked out in the second group stage. His teammate Peter Persidis died on 21 January 2009 aged 61. He was an unused substitute by Austria. Brazilian Chicao died on 8 October 2008 aged 59. He played 3 matches out of 7. Iranian goalkeeper Nasser Hejazi died on 23 May 2011 aged 61. He played Iran’s all 3 games for their first participation in a World Cup. Dutch goalkeeper Pim Doesburg died on 18 November 2020 aged 77. He was an unused substitute. Peruvian goalkeeper Ottorino Sartor died on 2 June 2021 aged 75. He was an unused substitute.

Christian Dalger, who was a member of France’s squad for the 1978 World Cup, has died aged 73. He only played the first match against Italy. This was his sixth and last cap with France.

Oscar Arizaga, who was in Peru’s squad at the 1982 World Cup, has died aged 65 on 26th June. He was an unused substitute as Peru was eliminated in group stage.

On this day 10 years ago, French Olympian Alain Mimoun died aged 92. He won the 1956 Olympic marathon in Melbourne at 35 years, becoming the oldest Olympic champion in marathon. However this record was broke in 1984 by Carlos Lopes who won the Olympic marathon at 37. He was the third and last French Olympic Champion in marathon (the 4th and last medalist overall).

Swiss Roberto Frigerio died on 9 April 2023 aged 84, he was an unused substitute. Mexican Alfredo Hernández died on 17 January 2003 (!) aged 67, he only played Mexico’s third and last match, as Mexico was eliminated in the group stage.
