Ah, that explains why the name sounded familiar! It was his brother I was thinking of. Having said that, Steve did play nearly 500 games in the football league between 1969 and 1983, so not so obscure.

Here's one I remember from my old football card collection! Dave Wagstaffe, the former Wolves winger, has died aged 70. "He made a total of 324 league appearances for the club, and was part of their 1974 League Cup-winning side that beat his former team Man City 2-1 in the final at Wembley. He left Wolves in 1976 for Blackburn, where he became the first player to receive a red card in English football."

Virginia Johnson The female half of the Masters and Johnson sex research team has died aged 88. They've been in the news just this last week due to the impending film about them starring Michael Sheen as Masters and Lizzie Caplan as Johnson.

Jack Crompton The Manchester United goalkeeper who played for them in the 40s and 50s has died aged 91. He was in goal when they beat Blackpool to win the F.A. Cup in 1946.

Alan Myers The drummer with Devo between 1976 and 1986 has died of cancer. He played on their biggest hit "Whip It".

Michael Baigent The New Zealand born co-author (with Richard Leigh) of "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" has died aged 65. In 2006 they unsuccessfully sued Dan Brown's publisher claiming that "The Da Vinci Code" had infringed their copyright.

Gene Mako "Gene Mako, a champion tennis player who paired with the legendary Don Budge to win four doubles titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in the 1930s, died Friday" aged 97.

Geoff Strong The former Arsenal, Liverpool and Coventry City player has died aged 75. He was part of the team that clinched Liverpool's first ever FA Cup win in 1965 under Bill Shankly. He played 155 games for Liverpool between 1964 and 1970, scoring 29 times.

Elizabeth McIntosh Not a pop star herself, but the sister of much missed "Associates" singer Billy MacKenzie, who committed suicide in 1997. Noteworthy in that she is the fourth MacKenzie sibling to die in tragic circumstances - the others died of a drug overdose and in a fire.

Donna Murray a.k.a. Donna Hartley, Donna Hartley-Wass, has died suddenly aged 58. She won double gold at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton and also won a bronze at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow for the 4x400m relay. She was married to the comedian Bobby Knutt.
