Our Spanish friends would like to claim Maria Díaz Cortes was the title holder at 117. She is now known to have died at the end of January. From the ever-reliable Wikipedia "... she owns a valid Spanish identity card with such a birth date, but it was not issued before 1975 and is not a copy of an earlier one, and her daughter is only 72" Not sure about the last point, why does her daughter's age cast particular doubt on her claim? However, unfortunately she will have to be consigned to the "not proven" list.

Manchester City have turned down an offer for Shaun Wright-Phillips. They've told Madonna he's not for sale.

Eamonn Holmes I agree with Tom Baker who said "Eamonn Holmes with his terrible 'I'm eating sh*t' grin and that acid blonde: bottle blonde, black bush - Fi-ona, I think he calls her. I couldn't possibly go on [GMTV], I would be sick in his lap"

    The Dead Of 2009

Often used to see him in the River Wyre Hotel sitting at the bar enjoying a pint. Invariably dressed in a rather garish shell-suit, possibly purple and pink, but then it was the eighties!

    The Dead Of 2009

Pop goes Pop David "Pop" Winans, patriarch of the musical Winans family has died aged 74. "The singer died at a Nashville hospice, where he had been since January after suffering a heart attack and stroke last October, his family announced" Maybe he should have been on our radar...

    The Dead Of 2009

Tam Paton "THE TROUBLED former manager of 70s pop sensation the Bay City Rollers has died at his home in Edinburgh. Paton was said to have raked in millions from Rollers' chart success in the 1970s. But in recent years he was convicted of dealing dope after police recovered £26,000 worth of cannabis from his high security mansion at Little Kellerstain, Gogar in Edinburgh's west end. He was fined £20,000 and also had £180,000 seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Paton was also arrested but not charged as part of the investigation into Jonathan King's sex crimes."

There are many Australians older than 88. Maybe only one Test cricketer though. I thought exactly that as I copied the quote. Maybe you should vent your pedantry at cricinfo...

    Carry On Dying

I wonder how many of the "Carry On" crew have had a hospital unit named in their honour? George Evans, a script writer who co-wrote the popular radio show "The Navy Lark" from the 12th series onwards has died of pneumonia aged 84 "in the June Whitfield palliative care unit" at St Helier Hospital, Surrey, named after his close friend. Evans can also rightfully claim a minor place on this thread himself, having worked on "Carry on Dick".

I would have thought Sir Charles Mackerras worthy of a mention, very much an Aussie despite having been born in New York. Still very active at the ripe old age of 83 - maybe he should start taking it easy!

Yes, by me for one! I picked Hank Locklin too! Well, that's the way the cookie crumbles, I suppose. May be the DDP should run a "look what you could have won..." competition too, just for fun of course!

Janet Jagan has died aged 88. President of Guyana from 1997 to 1999. She was their first white and first female president. It's probably a fairly safe bet she was their first Jewish President also!
