Well according to the same source, that is the same lady who was a witness at the Lady Chatterley trial. It'd be more likely for a literary critic to do that than the Chief Clerk of Buck Pal. So if they are two different people, the DDP people have got them confused too.

According to this, Dame Helen Gardner died in 1986. The name is spelled differently (twice in the same article), but it seems to be the same ex-old lady.

There are plenty of alternative treatments for cancer many of which are considered by some to be just as effective/ineffective as the standard therapies. I'd be surprised if she wasn't giving something a go.
